Liv Hospital Ulus: more details about the clinic

Turkey, Istanbul

Liv Hospital is located in Ulus about 30 minutes drive from the International (new) Istanbul Airport.

The medical complex includes 50 specialized clinics, which are located on an area of 30,000 m². Three of them are entitled as the Centers of Excellence.

About 50,000 international patients choose Liv Hospital in Istanbul annually.

Bone Marrow Transplant Center

BMT Center specialists have provided over 1,000 transplant procedures. Bone marrow transplant operations at Liv are available for patients from the age of 18.

Local doctors provide such transplants as:

  • autologous — own patient's cells
  • allogeneic — both from related and unrelated donors.

Stem cells for the treatment are taken from bone marrow, peripheral blood, umbilical cord blood.

Cancer Center

LIV oncologists provide treatment for cancers of all kinds.

Hair preservation chemo

Almost all cancer patients undergo chemotherapy. To minimize hair loss, Liv doctors use Cold Cap Therapy — a special cap cools the scalp, and as a result the vessels are narrowed and less chemicals get into them.

Deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH)

70% of patients need radiotherapy before or after surgical removal of the tumor.

TrueBeamSTx is the most advanced radiotherapy device today. The device receives an image of the patient's body in real time and acts only on the tumor without affecting the surrounding tissue. Liv oncologists perform about 500 procedures using TrueBeamSTx every month.

Robotic Surgery Center

Doctors use a robotic surgeon to treat tumors of the intestines, stomach, liver, kidneys, and prostate. The device allows you to remove formations through punctures about 1 cm. Compared to open surgery, robotic surgery reduces bleeding, postoperative pain and the recovery period.

Liv Hospital is the first and only clinic outside of the United States to receive Robotic Surgery and Robotic Abdominal Surgery certifications from the SRC Excellence Center.

SRC or Surgical Review Corporation is an international medical organization that develops accreditation programs for medical facilities.

LIV Hospital Robotic Surgery Center is chosen as a Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a place of exceptional quality, safety, outcome and care.

Radiation therapy

Oncology diseases required radiation application are treated with IORT - Intraoperative Radiotherapy aimed at microscopical removal of affected organs and tissues saving the health ones.

HIPEC

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy is aimed at treatment of:

  • appendiceal tumors
  • colorectal cancer with stomach metastasis
  • ovarian cancer.

Heated (40-42C) chemo agents are placed into the stomach for 1.5 hours to destroy cancer cells and minimize the exposure for the other tissues. HIPEC is more harmful than usual chemotherapy.

Medical treatment at LIV Hospital involves an Oncogramme - kind of lab method to detect what medicines will be more effective during the treatment. Is applicable if primary tumor origin is unknown, tumor is rare, a patient was unsuccessfully treated by medication prior, it is neсessary to determine drug sensitivity and patient's resistance.

Pediatric cancer is treated according to the treatment plans developed by the LIV Hospital Pediatric Oncology Council.

There is a special approach of teamwork at LIV Hospital Group called ALARA - 'as low as is reasonably achievable' to monitor the spread of cancer, estimate the treatment efficiency and post-treatment patient's condition to timely reach on any changes and minimize side effects.

Center of Neurological Sciences

Liv specialists have performed 256 neurosurgery operations with survival rate of 91% (average index in Turkey – 81%).

All kinds of neurological disorders are treated in the center. It is consisted of specialized units:

  • Brain and Neuro Surgery Department
  • Movement Disorder Clinic
  • Headache Clinic
  • Memory Health Clinic.

The Brain and Neuro Surgery Department specialists provided 256 surgeries in 2016 including functional neurosurgery, brain and spinal surgeries, surgeries in children (hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, etc).

Orthopedics Clinic

Liv orthopedists have carried out 2,340 operations. LIV Hospital’s traumatology is the only department in Turkey which cooperates with the European organization AOSpine and applies MakoPlasty – the robot-assisted technique for knee endoprosthesis replacement without cords or muscles injuring.

MAKOPlasty robot

Orthopedists use the MakoPlasty robotic system to replace knee joints with 97% of success rate. The device allows performing the operation while preserving muscles and ligaments. With its help, doctors install the endoprosthesis as accurately as possible so that it does not loosen and will serve for more than 20 years.
