Awards and Specialized Units

Metropolitan Hospital holds the Gold Badge (INTERACT-EUROPE 100) for excellence in oncology training. This distinction recognizes the successful certification of eight oncology professionals. The hospital also operates several specialized critical care units:

Robotic Surgery and Orthopedics

The hospital is a hub for robotic-assisted surgery in Greece. It was the first in the country to use the Da Vinci Single Port (SP) system. Surgeons have performed over 300 robotic single-site procedures with this technology.

In orthopedics, the team uses the Mako Rio robotic arm. This system provides high accuracy for hip and knee replacement. Specialists also use the SkyWalker robotic platform for orthopedic procedures.

Neurosurgical and spinal procedures rely on the O-arm II imaging system. This portable device provides real-time 3D visualization during surgery, so surgeons can confirm exact placement of tools and implants.

Neurology and Neurosurgery

The Neurology Clinic treats a full spectrum of conditions. The department manages cerebrovascular accidents, Alzheimer's disease, and epilepsy. A dedicated Multiple Sclerosis & Other Neurological Disorders Clinic has operated since 2022.

Specialists offer advanced treatments for Parkinson's disease. These include Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) to control tremors. They also place continuous infusion pumps, such as Apo-Go or Duodopa, to manage symptoms.

The Neurosurgery department includes several directors and registrars. Dr. Nikolaos Haliasos, an Associate Professor at Queen Mary University of London, serves as Director. The team performs complex brain surgeries, including removal of meningiomas and laminectomies.

Oncology and Pediatric Services

For cancer treatment, the hospital uses the CyberKnife and Gamma Knife radiosurgery systems. These platforms feature 4D Cone Beam CT for real-time tracking. They deliver high-dose radiation to targets while sparing healthy tissue.

Pediatric care is available for children from infancy through adolescence. The Pediatric ENT-Audiology Clinic is led by Dr. Ioannis Economidis. The clinic performs surgeries ranging from adenoidectomy to cochlear implantation. A Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic handles diabetes and weight management.

I would like to express my warmest thanks to the Interventional Radiologist Director, Mr. Giorgos Papageorgiou, and to his entire team for the excellent care they provided me. I visited Mr. Athanasios Manolis, Director of the 2nd Cardiology Clinic, on 27/8, and from the very first moment I could clearly tell how experienced he is and how well-trained he is scientifically in cardiology. He took time to answer my questions in a simple and understandable way, while also evaluating all the tests from my annual check-up in a particularly detailed and specific manner. There is no doubt that he is an outstanding scientist, whose knowledge, experience, and expertise in cardiology are immediately apparent. My overall experience with his team was equally excellent. All the staff were polite, responsive, and always available to help me and provide clear and precise instructions. I would especially like to mention his secretary, Ms. Lina, who was truly excellent—direct, prompt, and extremely helpful. The doctor who performed the Triplex was also exceptional. In a really unique way, he managed to put me at ease and make me feel comfortable throughout the entire examination, something I greatly appreciated. In my opinion, this is the level of professionalism, scientific competence, and human care that every citizen expects from a doctor and his team. Warm congratulations to everyone. To: Mr. Nikos Zagograios My doctor, Mr. Nikos Zagograios, after he repaired my arm in 2015, now 11 years later also repaired my left leg—my knee—with a total tear of the meniscus. I thank him from the bottom of my heart for everything! After a long surgical procedure in 2015, from 8 in the morning until 2:30 in the afternoon, Mr. Nikos Zagograios took on the task of restoring the very severe damage to my arm: the ulnar nerve, the carpal tunnel, and the epicondylitis. I had the ulnar nerve operated on again in 2014 in another hospital, with a different doctor. Back then, my arm had enormous damage and had atrophied. For many doctors, seeing my arm recover to such a great extent seemed almost unbelievable. And yet… this man (a Scientist) was found, and he changed my life. Mr. Zagograios then performed his own “miracle.” He gave me back a hand that could work normally again. He made me start doing what I love again, to return to motocross, to go back to my job normally, and—most importantly—to feel that my operated arm was even better than the other one. And today, so many years later, I needed to trust him again.! (Which I did without a second thought) I have no words to describe my gratitude. He isn’t just an exceptional scientist. With his knowledge, his experience, and his hands, he gave me back things I feared I would never experience again. Mr. Zagograios, thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you did back then and for everything you did again today. For me, you are not simply the doctor who operated on my arm and now on my leg. You are the person who gave me back the life I wanted to live.
