Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center: more details about the clinic

In 1940s Alfred P. Sloan and Charles F. Kettering established the Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI), which became one of the best biomedical research centers in the USA. Only in 1980 Memorial Hospital and Sloan Kettering Institute were combined in one medical facility - Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

The Centers of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital are located in New York City, Long Island, Westchester Country and New Jersey.

The Radiation Oncology Department

The Department consists of 2 subdivisions:

  • External-Beam Radiation Services
  • Brachytherapy service.

Sloan Kettering specialists developed a unique method for prostate cancer treatment — stereotactic hypofractionated accelerated radiation therapy (SHARP), which helps to increase success rate of cancer treatment.

Brachytherapy is also performed for prostate cancer treatment. Specialists apply brachytherapy with the help of portable CT unit that makes radioactive seeds place in the exact spot needed.

For breast cancer treatment, the oncologists carry out the intensity-modulated radiation therapy. This method is based on covering the treatment area with the high number of beams. This treatment option helps to preserve heart and lung function.

Oncologists treat lung cancer in the early stages using implantable positioning devices for more efficient treatment.

Surgeons perform stereotactic radiosurgery with the high doses of radiation to cure pancreatic cancer and brain tumors. Pancreatic cancer treatment takes up to 5 sessions. Metastatic brain tumors are treated with the high doses of radiation for 1 day.

Sloan Kettering’s surgeons also use Da Vinci robotic system. There is the most significant number of Da Vinci robots in New York City.

The Surgery Department includes the Advanced Reconstruction Center. Surgeons restore the physical appearance of the patients’ bodies after cancer treatment.

For the mandibular (law) reconstructive procedures, the specialists use AutoCAD to map and measure bone more precisely.

Over 400 breast reconstructions are performed in the Center annually.

For some this hospital may be the best, my experience with hospital doctors has not been pleasant. Hospital doctors work like a union. If you get a bad doctor, changing doctor in hospital is at mercy of your current doctor. This may not matter to you but when clinical trials are needed, my doctor would refuse clinical trials on some made up reasons. This is not an isolated one incident, over a 8 years period of cancer journey, this has happened 3 times to me. I had to move out of Msk care and seek trial outside the Msk. Same trials which Msk would refuse would be offered in other premier research institutions in the country. I could never understand the logic on how their system works, but be warned that when things go wrong, your doctor is part of union and does not go beyond text book care. If you have a choice, I would recommend to find doctor elsewhere. There are so many qualified doctors who would treat you much better.

STOP RELYING ON MIDLEVELS! Horrifying level of care almost entirely driven by midlevel providers, ie Nurse Practitioners & Physician Assistants. Everything is delegated to save money and your chatgpt is more knowledgeable than half of these midlevels Across the board, the bedside manner is awful. I know it’s New York and I know it’s a cancer hospital — but you can exude any positivity at all? Just try to visit the cafeteria and see how grim even the nurses look. Just see for yourself. Catastrophic lapses in care. Old, date rooms/facilities Never seen so many people die in such a short amount of time Dear MSK: Stop relying on midlevels!! You are destroying the good name of a once top-notch hospital

Doctors making me think it's life or death when they don't listen to the patient and take in their feelings. I talked to my doctor about it back home and they agreed that the test results might have been wrong. I'm going back to my care team that listens to me and provides better care imo. Like I've been dealing with this cancer for 5 years and I feel like this trip for a second option. Was completely useless. Soured my view of new York City. I will not be going back anytime soon. Thank you for letting me waste money for nothing

Dr. Babak Mehrara says he respects his patients. I believe actions speak louder than words. If so, Dr Mehrara’s actions prove definitively that he, in fact, does not respect his patients. Of the 13 appointments I have had with Dr. Mehrara over the last four years, he was on time for exactly one of those. His tardiness ranges from 30 minutes to 2 1/2 hours with the average wait time being approximately 73 minutes after the scheduled appointment time. While waiting, no member of his staff will: (a) check to see if you require anything,or (b) manage your expectations as to when Dr. Mehrara might grace you with his presence. When Dr. Mehrara does show up, he never apologizes for being late or shows any appreciation for your patience. Additionally, he never knocks before entering the exam room - he just swans in. Taken together, Dr. Mehrara treats his patients more like nameless cattle in a pen than like clients or even human beings. If you expect his tardiness to be limited to the office you would be wrong. I was the first surgery of the day on 2 separate occasions. Both times he showed up for the pre-op consult well after the surgeries’ scheduled start time. The staff at the hospital joke about how he is never on time. On the occasion he left me rotting in an examination room for 2 1/2 hours, he brought a colleague to this post-surgical examination. He not only refused to introduce or identify this individual – this stranger – he also refused to remove him from the exam room when I requested he do so. In fact, Dr. Mehrara said that we could either get on with the examination or he would come back later. Remember, I had already been waiting 2 1/2 hours past my scheduled appointment time for this guy to show up. I don’t know about anybody else, but I call that coercion and emotional blackmail. As for his surgical skills, the first reconstruction resulted in one breast being significantly lower than the other and largely positioned under my left arm. I had to live like that for almost a year before he would agree to fix it. Even after the revision, that breast is still significantly lower than the other, and it is causing me not an insignificant amount of pain when I move certain ways. When this pain was brought up to Dr. Mehrara at the last appointment, I will, thankfully, ever have with the man, he dismissed my pain as phantom nerve pain, without considering the pain might be caused by the misplaced implant. Recently, I’ve seen a lot of articles about how doctors gaslight their female patients when they complain about pain. Such doctors routinely do not take the concerns of their patients seriously. I believe the Dr. Babak Mehrara is one of these. Finally, a few days after my breast were amputated, one of Dr. Mehrara’s nurses laughed at my emotional distress when I described to her, my horror at seeing the mutilated remains where my breast had been. That nurse never apologized for her callous behavior, and when I tried to raise the issue with Dr. Mehrara, he didn’t want to hear it. Again, actions speak louder than words. I stand by my initial assertion that Dr. Mehrara does not, in fact, respect his patients in any way shape or form as evidenced by his actions.

Hands down the nation’s best for what my family was battling and I wish we had made the very, very long trip out here sooner. Dr. Athanasian, Dr. Tap, all of the nurses and the concierge team were really fabulous. There is a gift shop with good prices, the cafeteria food was healthy/yummy/affordable. Kids under 12 are not allowed in the recovery unit so make alt childcare plans. Obviously I highly recommend this hospital. Also love that the other best oncologists/surgeons in the nation also said this and place was the best.
