"We definitely would not have such a result
I did a similar operation 20 years ago in Germany - now it’s definitely better, now the postoperative period has been reduced to a day and it is less painful. The hospital is good, double ward and the conditions are comfortable. There is a shower in the room, it’s convenient. We spoke with Ralph Bull, a doctor before the operation. After the first consultation, there remained uncertainty whether to do the operation or not. In this regard, doctors are careful and if there is a risk of surgery with complications, they can offer injections and physiotherapy, which is cheaper and safer. Nevertheless, in my case, the doctor once again reviewed the MRI and decided to do the operation. Adequate treatment, do not inject too much, gave pain medication. In general, everything is fine, the postoperative period is small and everything is good so far. We definitely would not have such a result.

- No one tried to scare or speed up the treatment process, but on the contrary, explained the risks and different methods of treatment, which encouraged and inspired hope for a favorable resolution of my problem
Good evening !!! I was in the clinic for a consultation in early September. Dr. Bul and the staff are very polite, attentive, calm, and what is surprising, they are not trying to make money on you, but they offer options for cheaper treatment and testing. No one tried to scare or speed up the treatment process, but on the contrary, explained the risks and different methods of treatment, which encouraged and inspired hope for a favorable resolution of my problem.

I advise all friends now Bookimed will always help
In general, the impressions are certainly positive, and it is impossible to compare with our medicine. And according to the statistics of the treatment of my problem itself, the effectiveness is of course much higher. Of course, it’s hard with the language barrier, except for our girls in the international center, I didn’t hear a Russian word in 7 days, it was certainly difficult, and in principle translators also helped when I was with them. I advise all friends now Bookimed will always help.

I can say that the patients would write down all their questions in advance, so that later they would not think that they should ask the doctor, you also need to think in advance what you want in principle from the consultation and then it will definitely be useful
Everything is fine, they arranged a remote consultation to understand whether it is possible to perform an operation. This format is definitely needed, very useful. I can say that the patients would write down all their questions in advance, so that later they would not think that they should ask the doctor, you also need to think in advance what you want in principle from the consultation and then it will definitely be useful.

"I was very pleased with the clinic, the doctors and the company Bukibmed, and I can recommend the professors Buhl and Flo
Good day. Operated on 10.04.2019 spondealistez at the doctors of Bul and Flo, joint operation of a neurosurgeon and an orthopedist. Doctors are beautiful with golden hands. Actually because of these doctors this clinic was chosen, and in this many thanks to the coordinator Alyona. The surgery went great, recovery after surgery, under the close supervision of doctors and physiotherapists, also went well. The clinic itself is on the level of convenience of an average private clinic in Kiev. The staff is attentive and always ready to help. The chamber was spacious, clean and bright. The work of the international department was a little upset, they were allowed to sign documents in German without a paper translation at least into English, I’m not talking about the Russian language. Sometimes they consulted with doctors in German, without literally translating what they were talking about. But despite this, I was very pleased with the clinic, the doctors and the company Bukibmed, and I can recommend the professors Buhl and Flo.

FAQ about Neurorrhaphy in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is neurorrhaphy and when is it performed in Germany?

Neurorrhaphy is a microsurgical technique used to reconnect severed or damaged peripheral nerves. Surgeons in Germany perform this procedure to restore motor function and sensation after traumatic injuries, specifically when nerves are cleanly cut, such as in brachial plexus or severe digital nerve damage.

  • Surgical indication: This procedure treats peripheral nerve injuries causing motor impairment or sensory loss.
  • Timing protocol: Immediate primary coaptation is the gold standard for the best clinical outcomes.
  • Technique variations: Surgeons use end-to-end, end-to-side, or side-to-side suturing based on the injury.
  • Hospital care: Treatment often involves multidisciplinary teams at specialized university hospitals like Helios Wuppertal.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals often integrate neurorrhaphy into comprehensive trauma care rather than standalone elective surgery. Since the clinic in Wuppertal manages over 150,000 patients annually, their neurosurgical departments maintain high procedural volumes. This experience is vital because the success of nerve suturing depends heavily on the surgeon’s precision during the 2–3 hour microsurgery.

Patient Consensus: Recovery is a slow process where sensation or movement returns over many months. Successful outcomes rely heavily on specialized physical therapy and rehabilitation following the initial nerve repair.

Is nerve treatment in Germany safe for international patients?

Nerve treatment in Germany is exceptionally safe for international patients due to rigorous European Union medical regulations and the high density of JCI-accredited facilities. Specialized centers utilize advanced neuronavigation and 3D spinal imaging to ensure surgical precision and protect surrounding tissues.

  • Regulatory oversight: Hospitals adhere to strict German Cancer Society and European safety standards for neurosurgical care.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize O-arm spinal protection and neuronavigation systems for high-precision nerve repair.
  • Specialized centers: Major university hospitals operate 28+ specialized departments to manage complex peripheral nerve injuries.
  • Post-operative care: Germany provides world-class neurological rehabilitation facilities focused on long-term motor skill recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Germany ranks third globally for neurosurgical requests, yet safety often depends on institutional volume. Helios University Hospital Wuppertal alone treats 150,000 patients annually. This massive volume means surgeons handle rare nerve conditions more frequently than generalists elsewhere. High patient throughput typically correlates with more refined intraoperative safety protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that surgical safety is high, but recovery requires patience. Many suggest confirming a local physical therapy plan before traveling because nerve healing takes months.

What techniques are used for nerve surgery in Germany?

Nerve surgery in Germany utilizes advanced microsurgical techniques to restore motor and sensory function. Specialists perform direct neurorrhaphy, nerve grafting, and decompression. German centers prioritize interfascicular repair and targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) to manage complex trauma, nerve entrapment, and phantom limb pain.

  • Direct neurorrhaphy: Surgeons align and suture nerve ends when minimal tension exists between segments.
  • Facial nerve grafting: Large gaps are bridged using donor nerve segments or synthetic conduits.
  • Nerve transfers: Healthy nerves are rerouted to restore function in non-recovering damaged nerves.
  • Neurolysis procedure: Specialists release nerves from restrictive scar tissue to improve signal conductivity.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals like Helios Wuppertal leverage massive patient volumes to refine microsurgical precision. Data shows clinics serving 150,000 patients annually often house 28+ specialized departments. This scale allows for rapid multidisciplinary consultation between neurosurgeons and orthopedic specialists. This collaboration is vital for successful complex nerve reconstructions.

Patient Consensus: Many patients emphasize that early evaluation by a microsurgeon expands repair options. They suggest focusing on the surgeon's specialized experience in fascicular alignment and high-magnification repair.

What are the best hospitals for peripheral nerve surgery in Germany?

Germany houses world-class neurosurgery centers like University Hospital Ulm and Freiburg, which specialize in complex neurorrhaphy. These institutions feature high-volume departments performing over 500 nerve procedures annually. Advanced microsurgical techniques at university hospitals ensure precise reconstruction for traumatic injuries, brachial plexus lesions, and nerve tumors.

  • University Hospital Ulm: Reference center performing 500+ nerve procedures yearly for complex compression.
  • Medical Center Freiburg: Top academic hospital renowned for microsurgical reconstruction and high-tier academic research.
  • Hannover Medical School: One of Europe largest neurosurgical centers providing comprehensive peripheral nerve injury care.
  • Helios Hospital Wuppertal: Multidisciplinary university center treating 150,000 patients annually with 28 specialized departments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Focus on university-affiliated clinics like Helios Wuppertal when seeking complex neurorrhaphy. These centers often house 25+ specialized departments under one roof. This multidisciplinary access allows neurosurgeons to collaborate instantly with orthopedic and vascular specialists. This teamwork is crucial for successful limb functional recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that surgeon volume and quick evaluation are vital for recovery. They recommend prioritizing centers where specialists discuss realistic regeneration timelines and specific rehabilitation protocols.

How long does recovery take after nerve repair in Germany?

Nerve repair recovery in Germany typically requires 3 to 6 months for initial functional improvement. Full restoration of sensation or motor skills often extends to 18–24 months. Nerves regenerate slowly at approximately 1 millimeter per day following an initial 4-week resting phase after surgical neurorrhaphy.

  • Regeneration rate: Axons typically grow back at 1 millimeter per day after surgery.
  • Initial healing: Bruised nerves often recover function within 6 to 12 weeks.
  • Wound care: Surgical stitches and splints are usually managed within 2 to 6 weeks.
  • Critical window: Motor nerve repairs must occur within 18 months to prevent muscle atrophy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals like Helios Wuppertal utilize multidisciplinary teams of 500+ specialists. Data suggests that German recovery protocols emphasize structured rehabilitation. Clinics often integrate specialized hand or occupational therapy immediately after the initial healing phase to prevent permanent joint stiffness.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find progress nonlinear with frequent plateaus before noticing small changes. Early focus on specialized rehabilitation and scar sensitivity management is vital for restoring functional movement.
