"I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital"
I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital. I don't think that there is a hospital in Asia which can compare with this one. From the doctors to the nurses and all other personell in this hospital ALL are competent, very polite and friendly - the only small criticism that I have is that unfortunately many don't speak English very well, that's a great shame.

I am very happy with the treatment I've so far received at Bumrungrad International Hospital. Beginning last year, I've made three separate visits for treatment at the hospital. The staff are extremely professional and efficient using very modern equipment. The cost of treatment is competitive. I would strongly recommend it to other people looking for medical care.

FAQ about Laser surgery in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Are there any side effects from laser eye surgery?

Laser eye surgery in Thailand is generally safe. Most patients experience temporary side effects during the three to six-month healing phase. Common issues include dry eyes, night vision halos, and light sensitivity. Serious complications like infections or corneal ectasia occur in less than 1% of cases.

  • Dry eyes: Approximately 95% of patients require lubricating drops during initial recovery months.
  • Visual disturbances: Halos and glare around lights typically fade within 3 to 6 months.
  • Physical discomfort: A gritty or scratchy sensation usually resolves within the first few days.
  • Flap complications: Rare LASIK-specific risks include wrinkles or displacement requiring professional adjustment.
  • Vision correction: Overcorrection or undercorrection may necessitate a secondary touch-up procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing SGE-ready clinics in Bangkok reduces risks significantly. Centers like Intrarat Hospital maintain ISO 9001:2015 standards. This certification ensures specialized diagnostic technology. High-volume hospitals performing thousands of procedures annually show lower complication rates. Experience truly matters for flap-based surgeries like LASIK.

Patient Consensus: Expect frequent eye drop usage and some night-driving halos early on. Most people feel the temporary dry eyes are a fair trade for clear vision.

Can laser surgery remove scars?

Laser surgery cannot remove scars entirely but significantly improves their texture, color, and flexibility. Procedures like fractional CO2 and erbium lasers remodel deep tissue to flatten raised scars and smooth pitted areas. Most patients achieve 60-80% improvement after 3-6 sessions in Thailand.

  • Smoothing texture: Ablative lasers vaporize skin layers to remove surface irregularities and stimulate collagen.
  • Fading discoloration: Pulsed dye lasers target abnormal blood vessels to reduce redness or pigment.
  • Treatment frequency: Most patients require 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
  • Recovery period: Expect 5 to 10 days of redness, peeling, and skin sensitivity.
  • Sun protection: Strict SPF 50+ use is non-negotiable for 4 to 6 weeks post-treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinical data from facilities like Intrarat Hospital shows a shift toward multimodal therapy. Combining lasers with subcision or fillers often yields better results than laser alone. While costs in Thailand range from $3,500 to $6,500, the real value lies in ISO-certified technology. This high-standard equipment minimizes risks like permanent pigmentation changes common with older machines.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report that scars noticeably fade rather than disappear completely. Those with darker skin tones emphasize choosing experienced clinicians to avoid post-treatment spotting.

Laser surgery in Thailand is safe when performed at JCI-accredited facilities by Western-trained ophthalmologists. High-volume centers maintain complication rates under 1% for standard LASIK and PRK procedures. Patients benefit from modern corneal mapping technology and surgeons who perform thousands of successful eye surgeries annually.

  • Accreditation standards: Top hospitals like Intrarat Hospital hold ISO 9001:2015 and JCI certifications.
  • Surgeon expertise: Many Thai surgeons receive specialized training in Europe or the United States.
  • Technology access: Clinics utilize modern diagnostic tools for precise corneal mapping and vision correction.
  • Recovery window: Experts recommend staying 1–2 weeks post-surgery for essential follow-up eye exams.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from 141 Thai clinics shows a strong correlation between high patient volume and safety. Hospitals serving 100,000 patients yearly, like Intrarat Hospital, offer more robust infrastructure. This scale ensures dedicated English-speaking staff and immediate access to specialized backup departments if needed.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing high-volume centers to ensure modern technology and clear communication. Many advise budgeting for a longer stay to manage dry eyes or initial recovery hurdles effectively.

When should I schedule surgery during my trip to Thailand?

Schedule your laser surgery within the first 3 days of arrival in Thailand. This timing ensures a 7-day recovery window and completion of mandatory day 1 and day 7 follow-up checks. Early scheduling prevents travel disruptions and allows surgeons to clear you for flying.

  • Recovery window: LASIK requires 1 to 3 days while PRK needs 7 to 10 days.
  • Follow-up schedule: Plan for a pre-op consult plus essential checks on day 1 and 7.
  • Flying safety: Air cabin pressure can worsen swelling; stay 7 to 14 days post-op.
  • Seasonal booking: Reserve 1 to 2 months ahead for peak November to February travel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many choose Bangkok for its high patient volume, Intrarat Hospital manages 100,000 patients annually with ISO-certified speed. Scheduling your surgery early leverages Thailand's natural humidity. This environmental factor often aids initial eye comfort compared to dry home climates.

Patient Consensus: Travelers recommend adding 2 buffer days for unexpected delays. Always carry lubricating drops for the flight home after your final clearance.

Which are the top-rated clinics for laser surgery in Bangkok?

Bangkok's top-rated laser clinics include TRSC International Eye and Vision Center for refractive surgery and ID Clinic for dermatological treatments. These facilities maintain high success rates using ReLEx SMILE, FemtoLASIK, and Pico laser technologies under the supervision of internationally certified surgeons.

  • Ophthalmology leadership: TRSC International has treated over 100,000 eyes with nearly 30 years experience.
  • Clinical certifications: Wansiri Hospital holds Royal College of Surgeons Thailand accreditation for laser scar removal.
  • Aesthetic volume: ID Clinic Sukhumvit 5 has completed over 20,000 laser skin and mole treatments.
  • Hospital backup: Bumrungrad International Hospital offers JCI-accredited safety for complex laser vision correction cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While TRSC and Bangkok Hospital dominate vision correction ratings, price-conscious patients often secure better value at Laser Vision International. By booking directly through communication apps like Line, patients frequently bypass agency markups to save up to 20% on SMILE Pro procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients report achieving 20/15 vision within 10 minutes per eye and suggest utilizing free clinic shuttles to avoid Bangkok's chaotic traffic. Many emphasize that local SMILE technology results in fewer night halos compared to traditional surgery in Western clinics.

Is there an all-inclusive package for international patients?

Laser surgery in Thailand frequently features all-inclusive packages that streamline medical travel for international patients. These bundles typically integrate surgical fees, diagnostic screenings, and specialized care within ISO-accredited facilities. Specialized coordinators in Bangkok often manage logistics like local transport and language interpretation services.

  • Core medical coverage: Packages include surgeon fees, anesthesia, and essential pre-operative clinical tests.
  • Hospital facilities: Most bundles cover 1-2 nights of stay in modern clinical wards.
  • Logistics support: VIP airport pickups and private transfers between hotels and clinics are standard.
  • Language assistance: Dedicated bilingual coordinators facilitate communication between patients and clinical medical staff.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand leads in high-volume care with centers like Intrarat Hospital serving 100,000 patients annually. Our data indicates that while base costs range from $3,500 to $6,500, the highest value is found in bundled pre-op screenings. These packages often save patients over 77% compared to average US costs of $21,500.

Patient Consensus: Patients advise requesting a written breakdown to clarify if medications like eye drops are included. Many recommend budgeting an extra 20% for unexpected local pharmacy costs or extended recovery stays.

How long should I stay in Thailand for recovery after laser surgery?

Plan to stay in Thailand for 7 to 14 days after laser surgery to ensure safe recovery. This window allows for critical post-operative checks and flap stabilization before long-haul travel. Specialized procedures like PRK or laser skin resurfacing often require up to 21 days for full epithelial regrowth.

  • LASIK recovery: Stay 7 days to monitor the corneal flap and attend follow-up appointments.
  • PRK timeline: Budget 14 days as haze and discomfort often peak between days 5 and 7.
  • Skin resurfacing: Remain 10 to 14 days until initial oozing and severe redness subside completely.
  • Travel safety: Avoid flying for 7 days to prevent severe dry eye from cabin air.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that while most patients pass the 48-hour check, complications like epithelial haze often peak late. Facilities like Intrarat Hospital see over 100,000 patients annually and emphasize that day 7 check-ups are vital. Booking a flexible return flight is more cost-effective than managing mid-flight eye swelling or infections later.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently regret flying home before day 10, noting that dry cabin air significantly worsens eye pain. Many recommend budgeting an extra $400 for hotel extensions to ensure the bandage contact lenses are removed by a surgeon.

What popular cosmetic laser treatments are widely performed in Thailand?

Thailand offers advanced cosmetic laser treatments including Pico lasers for pigmentation, CO2 fractional lasers for scarring, and Q-switched Nd:YAG for skin rejuvenation. Major centers in Bangkok use JCI-accredited standards and PicoSure technology to treat melasma, acne scars, and perform permanent hair removal with minimal downtime for international patients.

  • Pico lasers: Ultra-short pulses target tattoos, freckles, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with high precision.
  • Fractional CO2: Gold standard for deep acne scar remodeling and intensive skin resurfacing treatments.
  • Nd:YAG lasers: Effective for vascular redness, facial brightening, and hair removal on darker skin.
  • Erbium YAG: Gentler resurfacing option preferred for patients seeking shorter recovery and lower pigment risk.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand's high procedural volume often leads to superior technical expertise in treating ethnic skin tones. While US averages reach $21,500, Thai clinics like Intrarat Hospital maintain high safety standards with ISO certifications. Patients often save up to 77% while accessing the same PicoSure technology found in premium Western dermatology practices.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that 3 to 5 sessions of fractional lasers provide life-changing rejuvenation results. Most emphasize that strict sun protection for 6 weeks is vital to prevent dark spots after treatment.
