"I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital"
I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital. I don't think that there is a hospital in Asia which can compare with this one. From the doctors to the nurses and all other personell in this hospital ALL are competent, very polite and friendly - the only small criticism that I have is that unfortunately many don't speak English very well, that's a great shame.

FAQ about Mohs microsurgery in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the cure rate of Mohs micrographic surgery in Thailand?

Mohs micrographic surgery in Thailand offers a 97% to 99% cure rate for primary skin cancers. This gold-standard procedure ensures 100% margin examination. Specialized centers like MedPark Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phuket report success rates reaching 94% for recurrent cases and 99% for basal cell carcinoma.

  • Success rates: Primary skin cancers reach 99% effectiveness while recurrent cases average 94%.
  • Margin control: Surgeons examine 100% of tissue margins microscopically during the real-time procedure.
  • Specialized centers: Top facilities include JCI-accredited Bumrungrad International Hospital and MedPark Hospital in Bangkok.
  • Tissue preservation: The layer-by-layer removal technique maximizes healthy skin preservation and aesthetic outcomes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Thailand is a global medical leader, true Mohs surgery is highly specialized here. Data shows it is concentrated in select top-tier Bangkok hospitals. Always verify if the clinic has an in-house lab for frozen-section histology. This facility is what separates true Mohs from standard excision with margins.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize confirming the surgeon's fellowship training before booking. Many travelers report high satisfaction with the cosmetic results when plastic surgeons assist with the final closure.

What are the risks of Mohs micrographic surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a high-safety procedure with a low complication rate between 0.7% and 2%. Risks include minor bleeding, localized infection, and temporary numbness. While scarring is inevitable, specialized techniques used by JCI-accredited surgeons in Thailand aim to minimize visible tissue distortion.

  • Nerve involvement: Temporary numbness or tingling occurs if small sensory nerve endings are severed.
  • Surgical scarring: Final scar size depends on cancer depth rather than the surface opening.
  • Wound infection: Rates stay below 2% when following post-operative care and antiseptic protocols.
  • Healing delays: Issues like necrosis or dehiscence are rare but more common in smokers.
  • Hematoma risk: Blood collection under the skin may occur, especially for those on thinners.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often overlook the reconstruction phase following the micrographic layers. At top-tier centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital, Mohs surgeons frequently collaborate with plastic surgeons for immediate closure. This dual-specialty approach significantly improves aesthetic outcomes for complex facial areas like the nose or eyelids.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report surprising 6 to 8 week healing times for flap closures. They emphasize that while facial sites may weep initially, the results are worth the wait.

How long does the procedure take and what can I expect on the day of surgery?

Mohs microsurgery in Thailand typically takes 4 to 8 hours from arrival to discharge. While individual tissue excision only requires 20 minutes, patients must wait approximately 60 minutes between stages for laboratory analysis. Expect a full-day commitment at JCI-accredited facilities in Bangkok.

  • Arrival time: Plan to arrive 60 minutes early for medical history and initial numbing.
  • Surgical stages: Surgeons remove tissue layers sequentially until margins are confirmed clear of cancer.
  • Lab processing: Expect 1 hour of waiting between each stage for microscopic slide preparation.
  • Anesthesia type: Doctors typically use local anesthesia, though some clinics offer mild sedation options.
  • Post-op care: Patients receive a pressure bandage and specific wound care instructions before discharge.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While hospitals like Bumrungrad International Hospital utilize advanced digital imaging, the lab phase remains the longest part. We see that 80% of cases run longer than patients expect. Always clear your entire schedule for that day. Bring a tablet or book to stay occupied during the processing gaps.

Patient Consensus: Most patients report minimal pain during the procedure but suggest bringing snacks for the long wait. Many advise arranging transport in advance because post-surgical fatigue or `recovery fog` is common.

What is the recovery timeline after Mohs surgery?

Recovery after Mohs surgery lasts from 2 to 4 weeks for initial healing. Full scar maturation requires up to 12 months. Most patients return to light activities within 3 to 7 days. This precise surgical technique ensures minimal healthy tissue loss while confirming clear margins.

  • First 48 hours: Peak swelling and bruising occur. Minor oozing is normal during this time.
  • Days 3 to 7: Discomfort subsides. Daily cleaning with mild soap prevents infection effectively.
  • Days 7 to 10: Surgeons typically remove non-dissolvable sutures. Patients report minimal discomfort during removal.
  • Weeks 2 to 6: Wounds close fully. Increased sun protection is vital to prevent permanent discoloration.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients traveling to Bangkok for Mohs surgery should plan a 10-day stay. Flying within 7 days increases swelling risks due to cabin pressure. Top facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital serve over 1 million patients annually. Their high volume ensures specialized nursing care for complex wound sites.

Patient Consensus: Many notice the scar looks darker or firmer before it softens and fades. Consistency with petroleum jelly and avoiding sweat for 4 weeks significantly improves the final cosmetic result.

Which hospitals or medical facilities in Thailand perform Mohs micrographic surgery?

Major tertiary hospitals in Bangkok and Phuket perform Mohs micrographic surgery, led by Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital and MedPark Hospital. These centers utilize fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeons and on-site pathology labs to provide precise skin cancer removal with same-day results.

  • Bumrungrad International: Features a specialized dermatology center serving patients from over 190 countries worldwide.
  • MedPark Hospital: Offers dedicated dermatology clinics with on-site pathology for rapid 1-day surgical results.
  • Samitivej Sukhumvit: Provides advanced pathology lab support for high-risk skin cancer procedures in Bangkok.
  • Bangkok Hospital Phuket: Operates as a primary destination for specialized skin cancer care outside Bangkok.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Thai clinics claim to offer Mohs surgery, true real-time microscopic margin control is rare. Highly rated centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital often use a modified frozen section approach. Confirming the specific pathology workflow during your initial consultation ensures you receive the exact technical precision required.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing JCI-accredited hospitals and suggest verifying if the surgeon received training in Australia or the United States. Many recommend requesting pathology process details upfront to ensure margins are cleared on the same day.

Will health insurance cover Mohs surgery performed in Thailand?

Coverage for Mohs surgery in Thailand typically requires an international health plan or specialized travel medical insurance. Standard U.S. domestic policies rarely cover non-emergency care abroad. Patients should expect out-of-pocket costs ranging from $2,200 to $4,200 at JCI-accredited facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital.

  • U.S. domestic plans: These usually exclude elective or planned surgeries performed outside the United States.
  • International providers: Global plans like Cigna or Allianz often cover medically necessary Mohs procedures.
  • Accreditation requirements: Insurers frequently mandate treatment at JCI-accredited or GHA-certified facilities for reimbursement.
  • Medical necessity: Coverage generally applies only to confirmed Basal Cell or Squamous Cell Carcinomas.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand ranks as our second most requested destination for oncology and dermatology. Data from Bumrungrad International shows they serve over 500,000 international patients annually. Choosing such high-volume centers simplifies the medical coding process. This makes it easier for patients to submit reimbursement claims to international insurers.

Patient Consensus: Most patients recommend treating this as a self-pay procedure due to frequent domestic insurance denials. Many suggest purchasing short-term travel medical insurance to cover unexpected surgical complications while in Bangkok.
