What is important to know about a biopsy?

  • Why is a biopsy needed? Doctors use this method of analysis to make a final diagnosis and select an effective treatment regimen. A tissue biopsy allows you to finally determine the nature of the tumor (benign or malignant) and its sensitivity to different methods of treatment.
  • How is the biopsy procedure performed? The doctor inserts a special needle into the tumor and receives a small piece of tissue. After that, he puts a tight bandage on the puncture site. To ensure that the patient does not experience discomfort, doctors use local anesthesia.
  • What is the duration of the diagnosis? Depending on the type of biopsy, the procedure takes from 15 to 60 minutes. The patient will receive the test results in 7-10 days.

Bookimed has ranked the clinics that our patients choose for their biopsy. Need help choosing? Leave a request on the site, and the coordinating doctor will contact you. He will answer your questions about where the biopsy is done and how much the analysis costs, organize an examination at the hospital of your choice. My stay in the clinic was not long, but the volume of the operation was huge, in my opinion. I felt not bad, like many patients of this clinic, after the operation the next day, after the examination, I was allowed to go home. Everything was fine in the ward clean, sterile where necessary, I have no complaints about this. The clinic itself has a calm and cozy atmosphere. The staff is polite and understanding. And, of course, I would like to mention the surgeon Mindaugas Kazanavičius, who performed the operation and coped brilliantly tasks. Many thanks to him for this!

I am happy with everything, the reception and everything. I didn’t get what I wanted, but in principle, everything that was possible from this reception was done to me, so I have no complaints against the doctors, except that the situation did not resolve as I wanted. In principle, I am very pleased with the reception and attention. They took a blood test from me and did it during the day and the doctor’s reception is very attentive. Bookimed always calls back, asks. Initially advised by friends and very satisfied.

FAQ about Biopsy in Lithuania

What are the types of biopsy?

There are 2 types of biopsy: internal and external.

An external biopsy is a collection of material for the study (biopsy) of their surface tissues: skin and mucous membranes. Such a procedure does not require special facilities for visualization or computer control.

An internal biopsy is one in which doctors take a biopsy from the internal organs. For this, doctors use special equipment: MRI, ultrasound, etc.

According to the American Cancer Society , there are several varieties of biopsies.

Types of biopsy

excisional

For research, doctors take the entire neoplasm (tumor, cyst, etc.).

incisional

Doctors take a small piece of altered tissue.

Puncture

The sampling of material for research is carried out using a puncture - a puncture with a special needle.

Aspiration

Material for diagnostics is taken using a thin vacuum tube.

Trepanation

Doctors open hard tissues.

Sighting

The biopsy is obtained under the control ("sight") of a special installation: ultrasound, MRI, endoscopy, etc.

Fusion biopsy

Hybrid technology for prostate diagnostics. Doctors take the material under the visual control of the installation, which combines ultrasound and MRI. It allows you to overlay images of each other's tumors and get a 3D image of it with a clear marking of suspicious areas.

How is a biopsy performed?

All decisions about the type of study, imaging methods, methods of anesthesia are made by the attending physician. The radiologist helps the doctor visually monitor the progress of the procedure.

The most common type of biopsy is puncture. Therefore, it is important to know how such a procedure is carried out. According to the resource RadiologyInfo , before taking a biopsy, the doctor treats the puncture area with an anesthetic. Small children are prescribed general anesthesia (narcosis). This avoids pain and makes the procedure comfortable for the child. For adult patients, doctors use local anesthesia. Anesthesia is indicated in cases where the procedure requires the collection of a large area of tissue.

Doctors use ultrasound (ultrasound) or computed tomography (CT) to pinpoint the exact location of the procedure. Then they mark with a marker the point where the needle will be inserted. In this place, specialists disinfect and remove hair from the skin. Next, make a small puncture. Doctors insert a needle, under the visual control of special installations, advance it to the focus and take a tissue sample. More detailed analysis may require multiple samples. A pressure bandage is applied to the incision site. To avoid possible complications, the medical staff monitors the patient for the next 2-3 hours. The procedure lasts 20-60 minutes.

At the puncture site for 2-3 days, the patient may feel soreness. With severe pain syndrome, the doctor prescribes analgesics. The bandage can be removed the day after the biopsy. Then you can take water procedures.

How long does it take to analyze the obtained tissues?

Doctors place the resulting tissues in a special solution. Then the material is dehydrated, impregnated with paraffin or other similar preparation. The resulting block is divided into thin (less than 0.1 mm) sections, which are stained and placed between two glass slides. The final result is called a histological specimen. His analysis is carried out by a pathologist. He evaluates the features of cells under a microscope and, based on this, draws a conclusion about the nature of the tumor.
