What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the wrist. This causes numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain in the hand — especially at night or while using your hand.
This condition is caused by inflammation of the tendon sheath and tendons on the back side of the wrist, near the thumb. This leads to constriction or narrowing of the movement of the tendons inside. In most cases, the condition is due to aging or repetitive use, as well as chronic inflammatory conditions. Treatment involves surgery, where the sheath is cut to reduce compression and friction.
