The European Institute of Oncology was founded in 1994. Since then, it is a quickly developing research medical facility considered one of the most prominent in Europe. It is located 50 kilometers away from the nearest airport.
IEO specialists work in the Institute on a full-time basis. Such regime ensures they can conduct their research or medicine activities effectively. IEO utilizes patient-oriented treatment methods with the use of non-invasive techniques. Doctors work within a multidisciplinary system that allows complete understanding of the disease and effective treatment. Leading specialists from different departments compose the treatment plan for each person individually, based on patient’s body features and disease traits.
IEO is certified by:
JCI (Joint Commission International), guarantees safety and quality of provided medical care.
IEO is the first clinic that has implemented several groundbreaking innovations and techniques, which were adopted later in the best clinics all over the world. IEO Breast Program was established to promote early detection and public education regarding mammary diseases. Each case is surveyed by large number of physicians from specialized departments to assign the most suitable treatment regime. More than 3,600 surgical operations are carried out in the Department annually. Surgeons focus on conservative and esthetical surgical practices, utilizing the-state-of-the-art devices and techniques to preserve breast tenderness.
The Radiology Department utilizes the most advanced equipment to treat cancer patients. Latest generation devices are used in the Clinic, such as TomoTherapy, Trilogy System, Vero system, Cyberknife. IEO Radiotherapy Department is among 10 world’s best radiotherapy centers. The most contemporary techniques are used in tumor-removal process with accent on preserving patient’s quality of life.
Oncologists at the European Institute of Oncology have performed the largest number of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) procedures in Europe. This treatment presents a minimally-invasive way to eradicate cancer cells within patient’s body with high accuracy. Ultrasound imaging is used to locate target areas.
Outside the Institute
Physicians at the Department carry out more than 1,000 surgical operations with the assistance of robotic devices annually. There are 3 Da Vinci robotic systems at the Department’s disposal. These advanced devices are used in gynecology, head and neck treatment, thoracic, abdominopelvic surgeries, and breast operations. Training school is available in the Department to teach physicians to perform robotic-assisted operations. Robotic surgery has several advantages compared to traditional methods:
The Department uses the most comprehensive approaches to treat patients with hematological pathologies: leukemia, myeloblastic, etc. All therapies are carried out with accordance to international guidelines and techniques. Researches and discoveries made in the Department are integrated into the patients’ Clinical Programs for increased treatment efficiency.
Numerous research projects in the fields of oncology, molecular medicine, and minimally invasive surgery are developing within the Institute. The constant research process is aimed to improve present treatment methods and create new techniques. New molecular drugs are developed and tested, oncochip technology is being implemented. This technology is a precise and cheap method to identify cancer cell mutation.
