About the clinic

San Carlo di Nancy clinic in Rome, Italy offers diagnosis and surgery for vitreous body destruction and retinal detachment. Diagnostic OCT scans start from around 100 EUR, with the comprehensive retinal detachment repair package typically costing about 5,500 EUR. The clinic is accredited by the Italian National Health Service and the surgical package includes hospitalization and all essential medical materials.

The primary treatment is Retinal detachment repair via vitrectomy. This surgery removes the damaged vitreous gel from inside the eye. It then repairs the detached retina. The procedure typically requires one night of hospital stay.

Comprehensive Treatment Package

The clinic offers an all-inclusive surgical package for retinal detachment. The price covers the entire treatment journey. This package includes:

  • Vitrectomy surgery performed by the medical team
  • A mandatory 1-night stay in the hospital
  • All necessary pre-operative tests and medical consultations
  • Required medical materials and medications for the procedure
  • Continuous medical and nursing assistance during the stay

The package cost is typically around 5,500 EUR. It does not cover flights, hotel accommodations outside the hospital, or local transfers.

Diagnostic Process

Accurate diagnosis is the first step. The clinic uses advanced imaging technology. Available diagnostics include:

  • OCT Scan (Optical Coherence Tomography): This non-invasive imaging test provides detailed cross-sectional pictures of the retina. It helps doctors precisely locate tears or detachments.
  • Initial Consultation: A thorough examination and discussion with a specialist to assess symptoms and plan the necessary treatment.

Dr. Scipione Rossi heads the department overseeing these treatments. The clinic has served over 15,000 patients annually since 1976. Its accreditation ensures it meets strict national healthcare standards. For a precise evaluation and treatment plan, patients can contact the clinic directly.

Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy is, without a doubt, the most incompetent and indifferent hospital I’ve ever encountered. I showed up at 11:45 PM with a knee injury, visibly limping and in discomfort. The woman at the front desk completely ignored me while flirting and laughing with ambulance staff — as if I was invisible. When she finally acknowledged me, I was checked in and then left waiting for nearly 3 hours. No updates. No triage. No urgency. Just indifference. When I was finally called back, the doctor barely looked at me and told me there was “nothing they could do” because I wasn’t in “serious” pain — as if I needed to be crawling or bleeding out to be treated. I asked — practically begged — for at least an X-ray to rule out a serious injury. His response? “Come back in the morning.” That was it. No ice pack. No compression wrap. No care. Not even basic human decency. Three hours wasted, zero treatment, and a complete disregard for patient wellbeing. I walked out in the same condition I arrived — except now I was furious, exhausted, and in more pain. The next morning, I went to a private doctor, who immediately took care of me, got imaging done, provided a diagnosis, and gave me the medication I needed. This hospital is a shameful excuse for a medical facility. Unprofessional, unorganized, and uncaring. If you have a real emergency, go anywhere else.

Took my daughter to ER for severe right lower abdominal pain after 2100. The women in the waiting area knowing we don’t speak Italian, helped us get the nurses attention. She was taken to the back for treatment and had pain reliever right away. Multi-lingual providers were available, sympathetic, and comforted her. Diagnosed and sent home in three hours, in contrary to most impressions of health care services in Rome. To top it all, when I asked for any financial obligation, I was told, everything is free. Didn’t have to pay a single cent for real emergency medical treatment!!!Thankful for Italian Socialized Healthcare System!!!

Poor service and empathy with patients. Medicine is not only about diagnostic and medical treatment, is also about people. Today me and my daughter had to go to ER/emergency assistance. No empathy, bad mood and poor communication to patient from doctor and nurse who assisted us. I would not recommend this hospital (not all was bad, the man in the reception was polite and supportive).

My wife was taken into San Carlo in the early hours of the morning. She was left for a few hours unattended , but i guess that is no different from anywhere in the world. Taking into account that there was a language barrier as we are from England. The treatment and diagnosis was very quick, CT scan's Xrays etc all done within 12 hours and on an intravenous drip with pain killers, anti biotics etc, i cant thank the team enough. Taken into account we were in a foreign country i cant praise them enough. Would like visiting hours increased if the visitors were kept to a minimum i.e after the visiting hours 1 person only

Worse service and worse hospital, the police sent me here after an accident, the guy in reception desk told me like you breathe normally so go set there we'll call you , after long wait and horrible pain that i can't bear i decided to take a taxi to another hospital where they respect the emergency cases , don't waste your time there ,
