Founded in 1973 as the first hospital of GVM Care & Research, Maria Cecilia Hospital distinguished itself for its innovative techniques and highly complex procedures. Maria Cecilia Hospital represents the leading center in Italy for innovation in heart surgery for 50 years that handles over 15% of cardiac surgery operations in Italy.

The hospital has 211 beds, of which 24 for intensive care. It is among the few hospitals that use the Ozaki technique for the reconstruction of the aortic valve which does not require the implantation of biological or mechanical prostheses, but uses tissue taken from the patient's pericardium to create a "tailor-made valve“.

The Electrophysiology Department was among the first 14 centers in the world to implant the smallest pacemaker in the world, Micra is 93% smaller than conventional pacemakers, about the size of a large vitamin capsule, directly into the heart. The latest Gamma Knife Perfexion technology allows the treatment of brain lesions smaller than 3 cm in diameter makes it possible to avoid using a scalpel through the targeted administration of Gamma rays. Neurosurgeons make us of ORBEYETM, an innovative video-micro-surgical technique with a digital microscope with a 4K 3D orbital camera with an exoscopic approach, for the removal of extensive brain tumors.

Heart surgery

By adopting well-established minimally invasive and nano-invasive protocols not only is the access route minimised, with much smaller incisions (from 3 to 5 cm) to the intercostal space replacing traditional sternotomy (opening of the thorax), the need for Extracorporeal Circulation (ECC) — and therefore the need to stop the heart — can often be avoided.

The Hospital is an international gold standard for pacemakers and defibrillators for the prevention of sudden death and for the implantation of miniaturised pacemakers (MICRA – TPS) and serves as an international training centre for the latter technique.

The patients benefit from the remote monitoring system and multidisciplinary medical teams made up of different specialists, who are able to take even the most complex cases, relying on next-generation instruments as well as arrhythmia rooms, with stereotaxis and cardiac navigation, and rooms equipped for cryotherapy.

Neurosurgery & Gamma Knife

The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery deals with the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system and post-traumatic and degenerative spinal disorders.

Each clinical situation is addressed with the most appropriate microsurgical and microvascular technique, and the selection of each approach is based on the experience of a team of neurosurgeons with some 10,000 cases treated by ‘non-invasive’ Gamma Knife radiosurgery over the course of more than 20 years.

Diabetic Foot

The main clinical activities consist of treating preulcerative and ulcerative conditions, providing follow-up for patients subject to revascularization and/or surgical treatment, while rehabilitation mainly works on preventing secondary and recurrent ulcers.

The team including cardiologists, diabetologists, vascular surgeons, haemodynamic specialists, podologists, specialised nurses and orthopaedic technicians help the diabetic foot surgeon to select the right treatment for the specific needs of the patient and make it possible to save the limb of 90-95% of patients.
