How Much Does The Wertheim-Meigs operation Cost in Germany?

The Wertheim-Meigs operation in Germany typically costs from $20,000 to $30,000. The final price depends on the surgical approach, the clinic tier, and the length of the hospital stay. Patients save around 52% compared to the US, where this procedure costs $52,500 on average. • Surgical technique: Robotic-assisted or nerve-sparing methods typically add 20-30% to the base surgical fee.
  • Clinic classification: Costs in major hubs like Berlin, Hamburg, and Frankfurt often reflect premium university-tier imaging.

  • Specialist expertise: Choosing a Chief Physician for oncological surgery may increase the total hospital bill.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialized cancer center like Medical Center in Solingen offers high value through German Cancer Society (DKG) certification. Clinics such as Nordwest in Frankfurt am Main are recognized by Newsweek as top global hospitals. Patients benefit from established protocols where pathology and surgery are bundled. Thank you very much for providing me with all the necessary assistance and support at every stage: choosing a clinic and doctor, accompanying me upon arrival at the clinic and introducing me to Professor Korillos, providing the necessary translations and detailed explanations of all stages of treatment, and answering all my questions both inside and outside the clinic. In addition to being satisfied with the level of professionalism of the medical staff, the equipment and the capabilities of the clinic, I would like to note the comprehensive assistance provided by BOOKIMED manager Anastasia and our coordinator at the clinic, Alexandra, for their support at all times: from arrival, accommodation, translations and explanations, to always being available and helping with all questions - from the necessary route to obtaining all the necessary medical documents.

The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment
With the organization of medical services, everything went clearly according to the previous plan. Tatyana, the representative of the company, is very communicative, explains everything, no complaints, even came at 7.30 for the procedure, although there was no translation. I made a slight remark, the price for some services was not announced to me , but in fact it was added... These side effects must also be voiced before the trip...... The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment.....

I am writing a review for those people who are in the same difficult situation as our family. Just want to warn, think before you go here. They did not help us ... Moreover, now we understand that they simply did not tell us the truth, promised treatment that everything would be fine and we believed in it, sincerely! They didn’t save on treatment, did everything they recommended, but they just cheerlessly pumped chemistry and prescribed unnecessary consultations like a physiotherapist with charging a hopelessly sick person !!! The company "phoenix" is a soulless creature with the function of receiving money, I don’t even know how to call them anymore ... Doctor Professor Eger also smiled on detours and said that everything would be fine and didn’t even tell the family that the situation was getting worse, she appointed procedures ... As we now understand, everything was clear for a long time, we just wanted to be "treated" because we paid. They tortured our daddy heartlessly and cynically for money !!! Curator Stoyanova stopped responding to letters and the phone immediately, as soon as they informed her that the patient no longer exists. NO ONE! neither she, nor "phoenix", nor the clinic, they even expressed condolences ... It hurts to realize that nothing human is left in people ... We scolded our Russian doctors, and they just told us the truth right away

Not good. The people that I had appointments with did not show up. I met with others who seemed to doubt my records and then claimed that my medical imaging showed no problems whatsoever. I returned home and now seem to have pneumonia in the top of my lungs around the vertebra that are known to have lesions (T1,T2,T3). I consider your service to be a fraud.

My husband and I are very pleased that we made an appointment with Professor Elka Yeager. The examination was carried out on all areas of the body that interest us, and a chemotherapy course was prescribed based on the results of the examination. The first session was held in a hospital clinic. The host company worked very professionally, with great attention to patients. Many thanks to all and best wishes from us!

"I'm very pleased with the treatment
My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense.

He answered all my initial questions and the ones I've sent after his initial answers in meter of few days
I requested a second opinion for the treatment of prostate cancer for my dad. The cosultation was provided in written by Prof. Dr. med. Sebastian Melchior. He answered all my initial questions and the ones I've sent after his initial answers in meter of few days. This helped us in understanding better the situation and possible options. However due to the fact that most of the answers were of general rather specific nature, in the end we are still not sure what is the better treatment in our case.

"The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person!" Return: About the Doctor: "We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr
My mother was diagnosed in Russia with a terrible diagnosis - breast cancer stage 4. The doctors' actions were not credible, so we turned to Bookimed for the selection of a clinic and a doctor. We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr. Ursula Makowiec. Mom passed a 3-day examination in the hospital, in a separate ward. Friendly atmosphere, professionalism, respect for the elderly patient - all this allowed us to relax, not to try to control every step of the medical staff, to read the articles on the Internet. I was sure that we made the right choice. And most importantly - the diagnosis was not confirmed! My mother was not breast cancer with metastases, but a sweat cancer in the armpit without any signs of metastases, the prognosis is much more favorable. The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person! We plan to be observed further in this clinic with this doctor. I would also like to thank the translator Marina Wernke. She was not only an excellent professional, but also a very pleasant conversationalist, we were very comfortable with her. I also want to thank the curators who helped a lot all the time while mom was in the clinic.

Everything is clear and reasonable
Immediately I will note not the intrusive and at the same time "essentially" made by Alena presentation of the clinic. And really everything turned out to be as they described to me: the doctor explained how he sees my situation, what kind of opinion of Moscow doctors he agrees with, and what does not and what he proposes to do. Everything is clear and reasonable.

"I advise everyone here to contact!"
Hello! My dad was diagnosed with a diagnosis in the clinic: adenomatic stomach carcinoma of the 3rd stage. Doctors, nurses and accompanying personnel are qualified professionals, very attentive! All procedures are made as necessary, and not for profit. The only thing that is embarrassing is the menu for people without a stomach. (They gave it hot and fried) Accompanying company takes you from the airport on the day of arrival to the airport on the day of departure. In general, from the time of the first call to today, everyone is happy! I advise everyone here to contact!

FAQ about The Wertheim-Meigs operation in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the main risks and complications associated with the Wertheim-Meigs operation?

The Wertheim-Meigs operation carries risks of urinary tract dysfunction, bladder atony, fistula formation, and lymphedema due to extensive pelvic dissection. Major vascular hemorrhage and thromboembolism are also concerns during this radical hysterectomy. German oncology centers utilize nerve-sparing techniques and robotic systems to mitigate these surgical morbidities.

  • Urinary dysfunction: Extensive ureteral dissection often causes temporary bladder retention or autonomic nerve damage.
  • Fistula formation: Rare abnormal tracts between the bladder or ureters and vagina require intervention.
  • Lymphedema: Removing pelvic lymph nodes can lead to permanent leg swelling or fluid collections.
  • Vascular risks: Deep pelvic dissection carries risks of hemorrhage from internal iliac or obturator vessels.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics like Medical Center in Solingen and Charité lead in reducing these risks through Da Vinci robotic surgery. Data shows German centers focus heavily on sub-specializations, such as urogynecology and oncological diagnostics. This specialized oversight ensures that surgeons manage delicate ureteral tunnels and pelvic nerves with extreme precision, often resulting in faster bladder functional recovery.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that bladder dysfunction and prolonged catheter use are the most significant daily challenges post-surgery. Many suggest asking specifically about pelvic floor rehabilitation and ureter protection protocols before the procedure to manage long-term recovery expectations.

When is the Wertheim-Meigs procedure indicated according to German and international medical guidelines?

The Wertheim-Meigs procedure is indicated for early-stage cervical cancer limited to the cervix or upper vagina. International guidelines from FIGO and the German S3-Leitlinie recommend this radical hysterectomy for stages IA2 to IIA1. It is often performed at German Cancer Society-certified centers.

  • Primary stage: Indicated for stage IA2 with microscopic stromal invasion up to 5 mm.
  • Tumor size: Recommended for stage IB1 and IB2 lesions measuring 4 cm or less.
  • Anatomical limit: Applies to stage IIA1 involving the upper two-thirds of the vagina.
  • Secondary uses: Selectively used for FIGO stage II endometrial carcinoma invading cervical stroma.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals like Charite or Nordwest Clinic prioritize this surgery for tumors under 2 cm to avoid dual-modality treatment. While technically possible for larger tumors, German surgeons often suggest chemoradiation instead. Combining both treatments significantly increases long-term complication rates for the patient.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that this major surgery is more extensive than a standard hysterectomy. Many report that clear lymph node results during the operation were the deciding factor for completion.

What is the Wertheim-Meigs operation?

The Wertheim-Meigs operation is a radical abdominal hysterectomy used to treat early-stage invasive cervical cancer. This major oncological surgery removes the uterus, cervix, surrounding connective tissues, and pelvic lymph nodes en bloc. Surgeons in Germany perform this procedure to achieve cancer-free margins while preserving vital pelvic structures.

  • Surgical scope: Removes the uterus, parametrium, upper vagina, and surrounding pelvic lymph nodes.
  • Primary indications: Standard treatment for FIGO Stage IB and IIA cervical carcinoma cases.
  • Modern techniques: German centers use Da Vinci robotic systems and laparoscopy for precision.
  • Specialized accreditation: Leading facilities maintain German Cancer Society certification for oncological excellence.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Germany maintains its position as a global leader for this surgery because university hospitals like Charite and Solingen integrate molecular oncology research directly into surgical practice. Data shows these centers handle massive patient volumes, exceeding 60,000 annually, which ensures surgeons maintain high proficiency in nerve-sparing techniques during radical resections.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that this is a major cancer surgery rather than a routine hysterectomy. Many suggest requesting an operative report to understand exactly which tissues were removed and clarify potential long-term changes to bladder and bowel function.

What surgical techniques are utilized by German surgeons during the Wertheim-Meigs operation?

German surgeons perform the Wertheim-Meigs operation using standardized nerve-sparing protocols and oncogenetic resection to maximize cancer clearance while preserving pelvic function. Techniques include the Muallem nerve-sparing approach and Total Mesometrial Resection (TMMR), typically executed via laparotomy to ensure oncological safety according to S2k-Guidelines.

  • Nerve-sparing protocol: Surgeons use the Muallem technique to protect bladder and bowel autonomic function.
  • TMMR approach: Resection follows embryonic field boundaries rather than geometric margins to prevent recurrence.
  • Surgical access: Open abdominal laparotomy is utilized in approximately 71.5% of German hospitals.
  • Lymph node staging: Over 57% of centers perform intraoperative rapid sectioning to guide surgery.
  • Robotic assistance: Advanced centers like Medical Center in Solingen utilize Da Vinci systems selectively.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics show a distinct trend toward high-volume specialization, with centers like Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin serving over 800,000 patients annually. This volume allows for the refinement of niche techniques like TMMR, which can eliminate the need for post-operative radiation in specific FIGO stages. When choosing a clinic, verify if they perform at least 30–50 radical hysterectomies yearly to ensure optimal nerve-preservation outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize discussing the specific radicality type, such as Type B or Type C, with their surgeon beforehand. They frequently highlight that inquiring about nerve-sparing methods is essential for reducing long-term bladder dysfunction risks.

What does the postoperative recovery timeline look like after a Wertheim-Meigs procedure?

Initial healing after a Wertheim-Meigs procedure typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, with full physical and emotional recovery extending 3 to 12 months. Patients usually remain in German hospitals for 2 to 7 days to manage urinary catheters and monitor pelvic nerve function after extensive tissue removal.

  • Hospital stay: Inpatient care lasts 2 to 7 days depending on surgical complexity and mobility.
  • Urinary management: A catheter remains for 3 to 10 days to support resting pelvic nerves.
  • Lifting restrictions: Patients must avoid lifting over 10 pounds for at least 6 weeks post-surgery.
  • Mobility progression: Assisted walking begins within 24 hours to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Bookimed Expert Insight: German centers like Medical Center in Solingen or Charité Berlin utilize specialized oncology experts to minimize tissue trauma. Data shows that while the surgery costs $20,000 to $30,000, the rigorous certification by the German Cancer Society ensures specialized post-operative protocols that prioritize bowel and bladder nerve preservation often missed in standard hysterectomies.

Patient Consensus: Expect significant exhaustion and frustration with slow progress rather than just surgical pain. Success depends on a strict bowel regimen to manage common post-operative constipation and having dedicated help at home for the first 14 days.

Why do patients choose Germany for a Wertheim-Meigs operation?

Patients choose Germany for a Wertheim-Meigs operation because of standardized oncology protocols and high success rates. Specialized centers provide multidisciplinary tumor boards and advanced surgical techniques. These ensure precise radical abdominal hysterectomies while minimizing procedural risks like nerve damage or infection for cervical cancer patients.

  • Expert surgical leadership: Specialized departments are led by experienced specialists like Dr. Séverine Iborra.
  • Rigorous certifications: Facilities like Academic Hospital Solingen are certified by the German Cancer Society.
  • Advanced technology: Surgeons often utilize Da Vinci robotic systems for high-precision lymphatic node dissection.
  • Collaborative diagnostics: Every case undergoes review by a board of oncologists and pathologists.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Germany excels because its top oncology centers link directly to academic networks. For example, Academic Hospital Solingen connects to the University of Cologne. This provides patients access to the latest evidence-based protocols before they become global standards. This academic integration translates into higher safety during complex radical surgeries.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the transparent, highly organized medical system and the professionalism of the clinical staff. Many feel safer knowing their treatment plan follows strict national oncology guidelines.
