He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where he earned his degree in the 1970s, and later completed his specialization in internal medicine and endocrinology at Vienna General Hospital (AKH). His early interest in hormonal and metabolic regulation guided his research into diabetes, pituitary and thyroid disorders, and neuroendocrine tumors.

     1970s – Completed medical studies at the University of Vienna and began his residency in internal medicine.

     1980s – Specialized in endocrinology and diabetology, focusing on hormone regulation and metabolic research.

     1990s – Appointed Professor and Head of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Medical University of Vienna, where he led one of Europe’s most advanced centers for hormonal disorders.

     2000s–2010s – Published extensively on diabetes management, pituitary and adrenal disorders, and innovative hormonal therapies; contributed to numerous international clinical trials.

     Today – Serves as Senior Consultant at Wiener Privatklinik and maintains an active role in research, teaching, and mentoring young physicians.

Prof. Luger’s clinical expertise spans diabetes, thyroid and pituitary diseases, obesity, and osteoporosis, as well as rare endocrine syndromes. His work has had a major influence on the development of modern hormone therapy and diabetes management in Austria.
