Sebastian F Schoppmann

Univ. Prof. Dr. Sebastian F. Schoppmann is one of Austria’s leading specialists in general, visceral, and oncologic surgery, internationally recognized for his expertise in esophageal and gastric cancer surgery, minimally invasive and robotic techniques, and translational cancer research. His innovative work has helped modernize surgical oncology and improve patient outcomes across Europe.

He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating in the 1990s, and began his residency in general and visceral surgery at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). His early research focused on esophageal cancer biology and molecular tumor mechanisms, establishing the foundation for his later clinical focus on upper gastrointestinal surgery.

     1990s – Completed medical studies and began surgical training at the Medical University of Vienna.

     2000s – Specialized in visceral and oncologic surgery, focusing on esophageal and gastric malignancies.

     2010s – Appointed Professor of Surgery and Head of the Upper GI Surgery Unit at the Medical University of Vienna, where he introduced advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgical programs.

     Today – Serves as a leading consultant at Wiener Privatklinik and continues active academic and clinical work in upper GI oncology, laparoscopic surgery, and reconstructive procedures.

Prof. Schoppmann’s scientific contributions include numerous international publications on cancer biomarkers, tumor microenvironment, and molecular mechanisms of metastasis. He is also an active member of several international oncology and surgical societies, contributing to global guidelines on gastrointestinal cancer treatment.
