THE WAFI PROCEDURE FOR RECTAL AND COLORECTAL CANCER
ADVANCED MINIMALLY INVASIVE COLORECTAL SURGERY
EXCLUSIVELY AVAILABLE AT Anadolu Medical Center - Developed and performed by Prof. Vafi Atalay
About the WAFI Procedure
The WAFI Procedure is an innovative surgical concept designed to protect the colorectal anastomosis following surgery for rectal and colorectal cancers. After the diseased portion of the intestine or rectum is removed, intestinal continuity is restored by creating a colorectal anastomosis.
To protect this surgical connection during the critical healing phase, the WAFI technique uses a controlled tube-based ileostomy diversion system. This system temporarily diverts intestinal contents away from the anastomosis, helping reduce the risk of complications while maintaining bowel continuity.
Unlike conventional diversion techniques that require the creation of a stoma and a second operation for closure, the WAFI system allows temporary diversion through a tube-based mechanism that can be removed once healing is complete.
The procedure can be performed using laparoscopic or robot-assisted minimally invasive colorectal surgery, allowing precise oncologic resection while minimizing surgical trauma and supporting faster postoperative recovery.
This specialized surgical approach is exclusively performed at Anadolu Medical Center.

How are we doing?
About the clinic
The resection of large intestine (total colectomy with ileoanal anastomosis) is available at Anadolu Medical Center in Gebze, Turkey. This procedure may cost around $16,500 USD and uses Da Vinci robotic surgery for minimal scarring. The JCI-accredited hospital is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine, offering U.S. standard care at lower costs.
Procedure Details
The surgery removes the entire colon and connects the small intestine to the anus. It is performed robotically or laparoscopically through small incisions. This approach reduces pain and speeds recovery compared to open surgery.
What's Included
- Total colectomy with ileoanal anastomosis (robotic/minimally invasive)
- Pre-operative tests and anesthesia preparation
- 1 day in ICU
- 10-day hospital stay
- Pathology examination
- Basic medications
Preparation
Patients must bring prior medical reports and imaging. A colonoscopy with biopsy is done upon arrival. Consultation with both a gastroenterologist and surgeon is required before surgery.
Recovery
The robotic approach allows faster discharge than traditional methods. Most patients stay 10 days post-surgery with 24-hour ICU monitoring.
Additional Services
The clinic provides free airport transfers and Russian interpreters. Patients can get a free online second opinion before traveling.
