It was a great help to have somebody with me during the day of the tests, sorting my papers and dealing with translation
Having made an initial enquiry on line, I was impressed by the follow up and treatment proposals and costs I did some research and determined that I needed to get the very best medical attention It was a great help to have somebody with me during the day of the tests, sorting my papers and dealing with translation. Absolutely invaluable Everything was explained to me in detail My only comments are that it would have been good to have been informed about the number of nights stay in the hospital I expected an overnight stay after the procedure In fact for good reasons it was a total of three nights

The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment
With the organization of medical services, everything went clearly according to the previous plan. Tatyana, the representative of the company, is very communicative, explains everything, no complaints, even came at 7.30 for the procedure, although there was no translation. I made a slight remark, the price for some services was not announced to me , but in fact it was added... These side effects must also be voiced before the trip...... The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment.....

I am writing a review for those people who are in the same difficult situation as our family. Just want to warn, think before you go here. They did not help us ... Moreover, now we understand that they simply did not tell us the truth, promised treatment that everything would be fine and we believed in it, sincerely! They didn’t save on treatment, did everything they recommended, but they just cheerlessly pumped chemistry and prescribed unnecessary consultations like a physiotherapist with charging a hopelessly sick person !!! The company "phoenix" is a soulless creature with the function of receiving money, I don’t even know how to call them anymore ... Doctor Professor Eger also smiled on detours and said that everything would be fine and didn’t even tell the family that the situation was getting worse, she appointed procedures ... As we now understand, everything was clear for a long time, we just wanted to be "treated" because we paid. They tortured our daddy heartlessly and cynically for money !!! Curator Stoyanova stopped responding to letters and the phone immediately, as soon as they informed her that the patient no longer exists. NO ONE! neither she, nor "phoenix", nor the clinic, they even expressed condolences ... It hurts to realize that nothing human is left in people ... We scolded our Russian doctors, and they just told us the truth right away

Not good. The people that I had appointments with did not show up. I met with others who seemed to doubt my records and then claimed that my medical imaging showed no problems whatsoever. I returned home and now seem to have pneumonia in the top of my lungs around the vertebra that are known to have lesions (T1,T2,T3). I consider your service to be a fraud.

"I'm very pleased with the treatment
My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense.

He answered all my initial questions and the ones I've sent after his initial answers in meter of few days. This helped us in understanding better the situation and possible options. However due to the fact that most of the answers were of general rather specific nature, in the end we are still not sure what is the better treatment in our case.

"The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person!" Return: About the Doctor: "We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr
My mother was diagnosed in Russia with a terrible diagnosis - breast cancer stage 4. The doctors' actions were not credible, so we turned to Bookimed for the selection of a clinic and a doctor. We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr. Ursula Makowiec. Mom passed a 3-day examination in the hospital, in a separate ward. Friendly atmosphere, professionalism, respect for the elderly patient - all this allowed us to relax, not to try to control every step of the medical staff, to read the articles on the Internet. I was sure that we made the right choice. And most importantly - the diagnosis was not confirmed! My mother was not breast cancer with metastases, but a sweat cancer in the armpit without any signs of metastases, the prognosis is much more favorable. The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person! We plan to be observed further in this clinic with this doctor. I would also like to thank the translator Marina Wernke. She was not only an excellent professional, but also a very pleasant conversationalist, we were very comfortable with her. I also want to thank the curators who helped a lot all the time while mom was in the clinic.

Everything is clear and reasonable
Immediately I will note not the intrusive and at the same time "essentially" made by Alena presentation of the clinic. And really everything turned out to be as they described to me: the doctor explained how he sees my situation, what kind of opinion of Moscow doctors he agrees with, and what does not and what he proposes to do. "I advise everyone here to contact!"
Hello! My dad was diagnosed with a diagnosis in the clinic: adenomatic stomach carcinoma of the 3rd stage. Doctors, nurses and accompanying personnel are qualified professionals, very attentive! All procedures are made as necessary, and not for profit. The only thing that is embarrassing is the menu for people without a stomach. (They gave it hot and fried) Accompanying company takes you from the airport on the day of arrival to the airport on the day of departure. In general, from the time of the first call to today, everyone is happy! I advise everyone here to contact!

FAQ about Radiofrequency ablation of the liver in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How does RFA compare to Microwave Ablation (MWA) for liver tumors?

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) offer comparable survival rates for liver tumors, but MWA creates larger, faster ablation zones. While RFA uses electrical currents, MWA utilizes electromagnetic fields to resist the heat-sink effect from nearby blood vessels. Both are standard at German centers like Medical Center in Solingen.

  • Energy source: RFA uses high-frequency electrical current; MWA uses rapid electromagnetic microwave fields.
  • Ablation speed: MWA significantly reduces treatment time, completing cycles in a fraction of RFA.
  • Vessel proximity: MWA overcomes blood vessel cooling, making it safer for tumors near large veins.
  • Tumor size: RFA suits small nodules under 3 cm; MWA handles 3–5 cm tumors better.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics like Nordwest Hospital or Bremen-Mitte emphasize operator experience over device type. Data shows experienced specialists like Dr. Bernd Hertenstein perform both RFA and chemoembolization. Choosing a center with specialized interdisciplinary cancer certification ensures access to the most effective technology for your specific tumor location.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that MWA is faster and more effective for awkwardly placed tumors. Success relies heavily on the surgeon's precision rather than the specific energy source used.

What is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) of the liver?

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the liver is a minimally invasive, image-guided treatment that destroys cancer cells using thermal energy. Surgeons insert a thin needle-like probe through the skin into the tumor. High-frequency electrical currents then heat the tissue above 60°C to eliminate malignancies while preserving healthy liver function.

  • Targeted candidates: Effective for small tumors, typically measuring 3 centimeters or less in diameter.
  • Ablation technique: Uses real-time ultrasound or CT scans to guide electrodes directly into tumors.
  • Recovery period: Patients experience faster healing and less pain compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Repeatability: Medical teams can safely repeat the procedure if new liver lesions appear.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Leading German oncology centers, like Medical Center in Solingen, integrate RFA within interdisciplinary cancer units certified by the German Cancer Society. This structure ensures that RFA is not just a standalone procedure but part of a coordinated strategy. Patients benefit from this specialized oversight, which often includes 3D ultrasound technology to overcome the heat-sink effect near major blood vessels.

Patient Consensus: Many feel relieved by the needle-based approach instead of open surgery but emphasize the need to plan for follow-up scans. Patients often suggest discussing pain management early to handle temporary post-procedure soreness or fatigue effectively.

Who is a good candidate for RFA liver treatment in Germany?

A good candidate for RFA liver treatment in Germany is someone with a solitary tumor under 5 cm or up to 3 nodules smaller than 3 cm. This minimally invasive therapy suits patients with primary liver cancer or colorectal metastases who are not viable candidates for surgical resection.

  • Tumor size: Ideal for solitary lesions under 5 cm or triple nodules under 3 cm.
  • Liver function: Requires preserved health categorized as Child-Pugh Class A or B levels.
  • Surgical status: Preferred for patients where resection or transplant is impossible due to comorbidities.
  • Cancer type: Targets hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or oligometastatic disease from colon or breast.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals like Medical Center in Solingen emphasize multidisciplinary tumor board reviews. Data shows that 82 German clinics often utilize RFA specifically for patients with high-risk medical factors who cannot undergo general anesthesia. Patients benefit from specialists like Dr. Bernd Hertenstein at Bremen-Mitte Clinic, who carries 32 years of oncological expertise. This experience ensures precise probe placement in complex cases where resection would leave insufficient liver tissue.

Patient Consensus: Patients value RFA as a parenchyma-sparing alternative when age or previous surgeries make open operations risky. Success often depends on finding experienced centers where scans confirm the tumor is reachable by needle-based probes.

What are the risks and potential complications of liver RFA?

Liver radiofrequency ablation is highly safe with major complication rates typically between 2% and 4.6%. Most patients experience mild post-ablation syndrome, including low-grade fever and fatigue. Serious risks like hemorrhage, bile duct injury, or liver abscess occur rarely and are managed within specialized oncology centers.

  • Post-ablation syndrome: Flu-like symptoms affecting one-third of patients, typically resolving within 7 days.
  • Thermal injury risks: Potential damage to neighboring organs or bile ducts if tumors sit near edges.
  • Vascular complications: Rare internal bleeding or portal vein thrombosis requiring immediate medical monitoring.
  • Liver function impact: Risk of hepatic decompensation, especially in patients with advanced cirrhosis.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics like Nordwest or Bremen-Mitte utilize 3D ultrasound and expert oncologists like Prof. Bernd Hertenstein to combat the heat-sink effect. This occurs when large blood vessels pull heat away, potentially leaving tumor edges untreated. High-volume German centers mitigate this by choosing multidisciplinary approaches, combining RFA with chemoembolization when vessels are too close to the lesion.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find post-procedure pain more intense than expected, especially referred shoulder pain from diaphragm irritation. Timely follow-up scans are the biggest practical concern to ensure no microscopic tumor edges were missed during the initial ablation.

What is the success rate of liver RFA in Germany?

Liver radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in Germany maintains an 87.3% technical success rate for overall tumor destruction. Efficacy increases to 85%–90% for small lesions under 5 centimeters. Specialized German cancer centers report local control rates reaching 96% for early-stage patients through minimally invasive thermal techniques.

  • Success rate: German registries report 87.3% clinical success for complete tumor destruction.
  • Small lesions: Local efficacy for tumors under 5 centimeters ranges from 85% to 90%.
  • Survival outcomes: Early-stage patients show 5-year overall survival rates between 50% and 70%.
  • Safety profile: German clinics maintain remarkably low complication rates of approximately 0.9% for RFA.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics like Medical Center in Solingen and Bremen-Mitte emphasize interdisciplinary tumor boards for RFA. Registry data shows that while microwave ablation has a higher 93.9% success rate, RFA is often preferred because it carries four times fewer complications in German centers. Choosing RFA for tumors near sensitive structures significantly improves safety profiles.

Patient Consensus: Success depends heavily on tumor size and precise imaging follow-up. Patients emphasize that technical success at the time of surgery must be confirmed by subsequent scans to rule out residual disease.

Why do international patients choose Germany for liver RFA?

International patients choose Germany for liver RFA because of the high 85–90% success rates for small tumors and specialized interdisciplinary cancer centers. German clinics integrate 3D ultrasound guidance with multi-expert tumor boards to ensure precise tumor destruction while preserving healthy liver tissue within strict national safety guidelines.

  • Accredited facilities: German Cancer Society (DKG) certification ensures clinics follow standardized evidence-based oncology protocols.
  • Advanced imaging: Surgeons use high-resolution 3D ultrasound and 3T MRI for real-time needle targeting.
  • Specialist expertise: Experts like Dr. Bernd Hertenstein bring over 32 years of oncology experience.
  • Integrated therapy: Centers frequently combine ablation with chemoembolization or targeted chemotherapy for complex cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many countries offer RFA, Germany’s advantage lies in high-volume institutional experience. Top-tier clinics like Nordwest Clinic Frankfurt or Medical Center in Solingen serve over 60,000 patients annually. This volume allows them to support specialized research institutes where they develop advanced techniques like anticancer vaccines alongside standard ablation. Choosing these high-capacity centers often provides access to broader clinical trial options if RFA alone is insufficient.

How long is the required hospital stay in Germany for liver RFA?

Hospital stay for liver radiofrequency ablation in Germany typically lasts 1 to 5 days. Percutaneous needle procedures often require only 1 night for observation. Surgical approaches or complex international patient protocols at certified German cancer centers naturally extend the stay to 4 or 5 days.

  • Percutaneous approach: Most patients stay 1 night for observation after needle-based puncture.
  • Surgical ablation: Laparoscopic or open methods require 2 to 4 days for wound healing.
  • Clinical bundles: Major centers like Medical Center in Solingen utilize 3 to 5 day inpatient tracks.
  • Patient monitoring: Surgeons require 4 to 6 hours of bed rest to prevent internal bleeding.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics frequently prioritize inpatient admission over outpatient care to perform advanced pre-operative mapping. While the procedure itself is quick, centers like Nordwest Clinic often bundle a 3-day stay. This ensures all molecular diagnostics and PET-CT scans are completed before the ablation starts.

Patient Consensus: Patients often find the hospital stay shorter than expected, typically revolving around a single night of observation. Quick discharge is common when recovery is smooth and post-procedure tests are reassuring.

How is follow-up care managed after liver RFA in Germany?

Follow-up care after liver radiofrequency ablation in Germany follows standardized protocols from the German Society for Interventional Radiology. Patients undergo immediate imaging within 24 hours to confirm success. Long-term surveillance involves multidisciplinary monitoring by interventional radiologists, hepatologists, and oncologists to ensure early detection of recurrence.

  • Early imaging: Contrast-enhanced CT or MRI occurs within 24 hours to verify safety margins.
  • Technical verification: Critical follow-up scans are scheduled 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure.
  • Surveillance timeline: Clinical exams and high-field MRI scans occur every 3 months during year 1.
  • Biomarker monitoring: Regular blood tests track AFP or CEA levels to detect potential tumor markers.
  • Interdisciplinary review: Tumor boards re-evaluate cases if scans show signs of local tumor progression.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While university hospitals like Solingen or Nordwest Clinic offer high-field MRI, patients often utilize contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for interim checks. This specialized German practice allows for rapid, radiation-free monitoring between official 3-month MRI milestones. Highly experienced oncologists like Bernd Hertenstein prioritize this multi-modal imaging to bridge gaps in traditional surveillance schedules.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of keeping detailed discharge letters and imaging reports accessible. Local follow-up often shifts to community hepatologists, making patient-led record management vital for continuity of care.
