Laparoscopic oophorectomy (ovary removal surgery) in Mexico can offer significant cost savings, but it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Pros Cons
Lower costs. Laparoscopic oophorectomy in Mexico typically costs $3,500–$4,900 versus $10,000+ in the US, offering up to 65% savings. Safety concerns. Potential risks include a 2–5% infection rate and anesthesia complications, similar to US rates when performed by qualified surgeons.
Qualified surgeons. Surgeons are certified by the Mexican Council of Gynecology and Obstetrics, many with US or European fellowships and 10+ years of experience. Follow-up care. Patients need to remain in Mexico for 7–15 days for post-op monitoring, which may be challenging for some travelers.
Modern facilities. Procedures are performed in accredited hospitals in medical hubs like Mexico City, Tijuana, and Cancun, using FDA-approved laparoscopic equipment and JCI or ISO-certified infrastructure. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS standards differ from the FDA. However, top clinics follow international protocols, and many use FDA-approved devices, reducing regulatory gaps.
Minimally invasive recovery. Laparoscopic techniques mean less pain, shorter hospital stays (1–3 days), and faster recovery compared to open surgery. Travel-related risks. Potential risks include post-op travel complications and adapting to a new environment, but these can be minimized by planning and choosing reputable clinics.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. When performed by qualified providers, laparoscopic oophorectomy in Mexico can offer high-quality care at a fraction of the US cost.

The medical team was great
The medical team was great, the hospital was top notch. Dr. Pliego was available online throughout the entire process (both pre and post surgery) and the surgery went smoothly.
Even though Dr. Pliego was in another surgery when I was released from the hospital, I appreciated the hospital was able to provide my prescription for both antibiotics and pain medicine so I was able to leave and recover in our Air BnB s I was ready to leave the hospital.
I signed a lot of paperwork that wasn't in english.
About Bookimed service
