Thyroidectomy in Mexico can offer significant cost savings, but it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Pros Cons
Lower costs. Thyroidectomy in Mexico typically costs $3,000–$5,500 compared to over $7,000 in the US, offering savings of up to 50%. Safety concerns. Potential risks include infection (1–3%), bleeding, and nerve injury. These risks are similar to those reported in US hospitals when procedures are performed by qualified surgeons.
Qualified surgeons. Surgeons are certified by the Mexican Council of General Surgery, often with additional training in the US or Europe and years of specialized experience. Follow-up care. Postoperative follow-up may be more complex if you return home soon after surgery. Some clinics provide telemedicine for continued care.
Modern facilities. Procedures are performed in JCI- or ISO-accredited hospitals, using equipment from leading brands such as Medtronic and Olympus. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS standards may differ from the FDA. However, top clinics follow international protocols and often meet JCI requirements.
Shorter wait times. Patients can often schedule surgery within 2–3 weeks, compared to longer waits in the US or Canada. Travel-related risks. Potential risks include long-distance travel after surgery and adapting to recovery in a new environment. These can be minimized by planning extra rest days locally.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. When performed by qualified experts in accredited facilities, thyroidectomy in Mexico can offer safe and cost-effective care for international patients.

The medical team was great
The medical team was great, the hospital was top notch. Dr. Pliego was available online throughout the entire process (both pre and post surgery) and the surgery went smoothly.
Even though Dr. Pliego was in another surgery when I was released from the hospital, I appreciated the hospital was able to provide my prescription for both antibiotics and pain medicine so I was able to leave and recover in our Air BnB s I was ready to leave the hospital.
I signed a lot of paperwork that wasn't in english.
About Bookimed service
I appreciated the prompt responses to questions both medical and travel related throughout the entire process.
