"At the end, I wish to thank the Bookimed team for all the effort and the help I had for making the consultation happened successfully
The hospital is very modern in building and very organised since arrival you will have someone from the administration to assist in registration and then will take you to the clinic where your appointment is scheduled. Waiting time is reasonable, it is always expected to wait sometimes after your scheduled time to see the Doctor. In my case, I think I should have taken an appointment from first day to directly see the surgeon and not the endocrinologist. Do two days had been spent with the endocrinologist to repeat exactly the same procedure that I had completed in Bahrain, ie repeating the ultrasound which became in result exactly as a replica of the report done in Bahrain. One test was done new which was the anti thyroid plus vitamin D which I thought unnecessary. I do not know! . Any way after meeting again the endocrinologist with results of ultrasound and lab test results, she decided to refer me to the ENT surgeon who saw the ultrasound taken at Bumrungrad Hospital Nd my local hospital plus the biopsy reports and recommended operation to remove the the right thyroid node and if found being cancerous then again tho remove the left side node, A period of two weeks was advised for operation and follow up. I asked for an estimate then I was given a rough estimate for an operation which is probably three times the total cost of the operation in Bahrain, and their estimate did not cover pre operation procedure, not the admission cost , not the follow up visits changes neither the medicine. In conclusion, in my particular case I found my self to probably to be spending 8 times the cost if am going to do the same treatment I bahrain. At the end , I wish to thank the Bookimed treat for all the effort and the help I had for making the consultation happened successfully. From the bottom of my heart big THANKS to all and I wish you a good luck. Yours , Hameed Zuhair

I would like to thank him for his effort and sensitivity
The doctor proposed a different medication for my diabetes 2. He proposed blood test and package what I found was not useful since I had a blood test on which he base is prescription of last year. Also the medication that he suggested I can find it much cheaper outside of the hospital.

The hospital environment is very nice, and the staff very friendly. The doctor on the other hand was rather aggressive and needs to learn some better manners. She really made me feel uncomfortable and wasn't that helpful, I am sure she is very knowledgeable but I dont think I will return.

FAQ about Thyroidectomy in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is a thyroidectomy safe in Thailand, and what are the main surgical risks?

Thyroidectomy in Thailand is highly safe, with premium hospitals in Bangkok reporting success rates between 95% and 98%. Facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital maintain Joint Commission International accreditation and specialize in scar-free transoral endoscopic techniques to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

  • Nerve safety: Permanent vocal cord damage occurs in less than 1% of experienced center cases.
  • Calcium monitoring: Hypocalcemia is the most common risk; patients should stay 7–10 days for monitoring.
  • Specialized techniques: Surgeons use transoral approaches (TOETVA) to eliminate visible neck scarring during the procedure.
  • Accreditation standards: Top facilities hold Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) and ISO 9001:2015 for quality safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinical data shows a major quality gap between general hospitals and high-volume centers like Bumrungrad, which treats 1 million patients annually. Centers performing over 100 thyroid cases yearly demonstrate significantly lower complication rates for delicate procedures like subtotal thyroidectomies.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing JCI-accredited facilities to ensure sterile protocols and suggest using translator apps to bridge minor language gaps during recovery. Many survivors highlight the relief of scar-free results and recommend bringing a personal supply of levothyroxine post-surgery.

How qualified are the surgeons who perform thyroidectomy in Thailand?

Thyroid surgeons in Thailand are globally recognized experts, often holding board certifications from the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand. Many top specialists complete advanced fellowships at elite Western institutions like Yale. They are pioneers in scarless techniques, frequently performing over 900 procedures throughout their careers.

  • Board certification: Surgeons typically complete 4-year residencies and specialized endocrine or ENT fellowships.
  • Innovative techniques: Thai experts developed TOETVA, a global standard for scarless trans-oral thyroid surgery.
  • High volume: Leading specialists often exceed 1,100 procedures, surpassing typical Western caseload standards.
  • Facility standards: Most operate in JCI-accredited hubs like Bumrungrad International or ISO-certified Intrarat Hospital.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While hospital brands like Bumrungrad attract a million patients annually, surgeon-specific data is the true quality signal. Look for specialists at smaller ISO-certified centers like Intrarat. They often provide identical clinical outcomes with more personalized holistic care at competitive rates.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of verifying a surgeon's specific case volume of over 500 procedures. They often recommend requesting ENT involvement for professional nerve monitoring to ensure vocal safety.

Will I need lifelong thyroid hormone replacement after total thyroidectomy?

A total thyroidectomy requires lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy because the body loses its only source of thyroxine. After surgeons in JCI-accredited Thai hospitals remove the entire gland, daily synthetic hormones like levothyroxine become essential to regulate metabolism and prevent severe hypothyroidism.

  • Irreversible loss: Complete removal eliminates all natural hormone production, requiring permanent daily medication.
  • Metabolic regulation: Synthetic hormones replace natural T4 to maintain energy, weight, and mood.
  • Standard protocol: Patients usually start hormone therapy within 24 hours of surgery in Thailand.
  • Dosage stabilization: Expect blood tests every 6–8 weeks initially to fine-tune your specific dose.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai medical hubs like Bumrungrad International serve 1 million patients annually with highly standardized endocrine protocols. While the surgery costs $3,100 to $7,000, the long-term medication in Thailand is remarkably affordable. Generic levothyroxine typically costs only $5 monthly, making lifelong management financially sustainable for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report that hormone levels can fluctuate for over 6 months before stabilizing. It is helpful to track daily symptoms closely and join support communities for practical dosing tips.

What surgical techniques are offered in Thailand, and which leaves the smallest scar?

Thailand offers advanced thyroidectomy techniques including conventional open surgery, robotic-assisted systems, and scarless endoscopic approaches. The Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy (TOETVA) leaves the smallest scar because surgeons operate through the mouth, while the transaxillary approach hides 1–2 cm incisions within the natural folds of the armpit.

  • Transoral approach: Performed through the mouth, leaving no visible external scars on the body.
  • Transaxillary technique: Places small incisions in the armpit to keep the neck completely scar-free.
  • Robotic surgery: Uses the da Vinci system for high precision through minimal, hidden access points.
  • MIVAT procedure: Minimally invasive video-assisted technique requires only a tiny 2 cm neck incision.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Sikarin Hospital shows a high volume of international patients specifically seeking the transaxillary approach. While open surgery is the global standard, Thai surgeons have refined endoscopic methods to maintain high success rates for cosmetic-conscious patients. Patients should confirm their goiter size first, as larger growths usually require the traditional open approach for safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while the armpit approach hides scars perfectly, initial numbness in the area is common. Most survivors emphasize that the cosmetic benefit of a clear neck outweighs the temporary recovery discomfort.

How long should I plan to stay in Thailand for a thyroidectomy and recovery?

Plan to stay in Thailand for 10 to 14 days for a thyroidectomy and initial recovery. This timeframe includes 1–2 days for pre-operative cardiac and endocrine clearances, 1–2 nights of hospital observation, and 7–10 days of local monitoring before receiving a fit-to-fly certificate.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 1 to 2 nights for standard total or partial thyroidectomy procedures.
  • Observation period: Surgeons monitor calcium levels and vocal cord function for at least 48 hours.
  • Surgical follow-up: Drain and suture removal typically occurs 5 to 7 days after hospital discharge.
  • Travel clearance: JCI-accredited facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital require a 7-day minimum post-op wait.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While US hospitals often perform thyroidectomies as outpatient procedures, Thai clinical protocols at top-tier centers like Intrarat Hospital prioritize a multi-day inpatient stay. This approach ensures 24/7 monitoring for hypocalcemia and hematoma risks, which are most critical in the first 72 hours. Choosing a hospital with JCI or ISO 9001:2015 accreditation ensures these safety margins are strictly followed for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend booking a hotel near the hospital for easy access to follow-up labs. Many suggest allowing a 5-day buffer for potential drain adjustments or thyroid hormone stabilization before flying.

Which Thai cities and hospitals are best known for thyroid surgery?

Bangkok is Thailand's primary hub for thyroid surgery, offering advanced transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy (TOETVA) at JCI-accredited facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Samitivej Sukhumvit. Specialized centers in Chiang Mai and Pattaya, including Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, provide high-quality endocrine care with significant cost advantages.

  • Bangkok clinical leaders: Bumrungrad International and Bangkok Hospital specialize in scar-free, minimally invasive endoscopic techniques.
  • Expert surgical volume: Intrarat Hospital features specialists like Dr. Prapas Teerakul with over 900 successful procedures.
  • Regional medical hubs: Chiangmai Ram and Sriphat Medical Center serve as North Thailand's leading endocrine centers.
  • Global safety standards: Most top-tier facilities hold JCI accreditation and ISO certifications for patient safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Bangkok dominates in technology, the experience gap between individual surgeons is the real differentiator. For example, Intrarat Hospital reports performing surgeries with specialists who have specifically high procedural volumes. We recommend prioritizing doctors with over 500 thyroidectomies rather than choosing based solely on a hospital's international brand name.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently highlight that while JCI accreditation is a vital safety filter, direct communication with the surgeon about post-operative follow-up is essential for a smooth recovery.

Do I need any special vaccinations or visa for a medical stay?

Most patients entering Thailand for thyroidectomy use a 60-day tourist visa (TR) or a Visa Exemption. For longer treatments, a 90-day Non-Immigrant O-Medical visa is standard. No specific vaccinations are legally required for entry from the US or Europe, but Hepatitis A and B are recommended.

  • Visa options: Tourist visa exemption allows 30–60 days for citizens of over 60 countries.
  • Medical visa: The 90-day MT visa requires a hospital confirmation letter and financial proof.
  • Mandatory vaccines: Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is only required if traveling from endemic zones.
  • Recommended shots: Doctors advise updating Tetanus, Typhoid, and Hepatitis before any major surgical procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While small clinics focus on local care, JCI-accredited giants like Bumrungrad International Hospital process over 500,000 international patients annually. These larger centers have dedicated departments specifically to handle medical visa extensions. They often provide the necessary immigration paperwork faster than smaller facilities in Bangkok.

Patient Consensus: Travelers emphasize that while the paperwork for medical visas seems daunting, private hospitals in Thailand often handle the coordination. Most recommend carrying physical copies of your surgical appointment to show at immigration.
