Pros Cons
Lower costs. Umbilical hernia repair in Mexico typically costs $1,500–$4,190 versus $4,000–$8,000 in the US, delivering savings up to 60%. Safety concerns. Potential risks include infection (1–3%), bleeding, or recurrence. These rates are similar to those reported in the US when performed by qualified surgeons.
Qualified surgeons. Surgeons are certified by the Mexican Council of General Surgery, often with US or European fellowship training and 10+ years' experience. Follow-up care. Post-surgical care and emergency management may be more challenging from abroad, but many clinics offer telemedicine and coordinated discharge plans.
Modern facilities. Procedures are performed in JCI- or ISO-accredited hospitals in hubs like Tijuana and Cancun, using equipment from leading brands such as Medtronic and Stryker. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS standards differ from the FDA. However, top clinics meet international standards and use FDA-approved materials.
All-inclusive packages. Many clinics provide bundled pricing covering surgery, hospital stay, mesh, medications, and local transportation, simplifying logistics. Travel-related risks. Traveling post-surgery may increase the risk of complications like blood clots. These can be minimized with proper planning and medical clearance.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. Patients should carefully research and choose reputable providers to maximize safety and outcomes when considering umbilical hernia repair in Mexico.

The medical team was great
The medical team was great, the hospital was top notch. Dr. Pliego was available online throughout the entire process (both pre and post surgery) and the surgery went smoothly.
Even though Dr. Pliego was in another surgery when I was released from the hospital, I appreciated the hospital was able to provide my prescription for both antibiotics and pain medicine so I was able to leave and recover in our Air BnB s I was ready to leave the hospital.
I signed a lot of paperwork that wasn't in english.
