Hemorrhoidectomy in Mexico: Pros and Cons

Hemorrhoidectomy in Mexico can offer significant cost savings, but it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Pros Cons
Lower costs. Hemorrhoidectomy in Mexico typically costs $1,500–$3,000 versus $4,000+ in the US, offering 50–65% savings. Safety concerns. Potential risks include infection (2–5%), bleeding, or delayed healing. These risks are similar to rates reported in the US and can be reduced by choosing an accredited clinic.
Qualified surgeons. Surgeons are certified by the Mexican Council of General Surgery, with many trained in US or European programs and 10+ years of experience. Follow-up care. Coordinating post-op care from abroad can be challenging. Some clinics offer telemedicine or provide detailed aftercare instructions to support recovery at home.
Modern facilities. Clinics in Tijuana and Cancun use equipment from brands like Stryker and are often accredited by COFEPRIS, ISO, or JCI. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS standards differ from the FDA, but top clinics follow international safety protocols and meet JCI or ISO standards.
Minimally invasive options. Laser hemorrhoidectomy is available for select cases, allowing same-day discharge and faster recovery when performed by qualified specialists. Travel-related risks. Potential risks include discomfort during travel or delayed access to urgent care. These can be minimized by planning your stay and arranging local support.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. When performed by qualified professionals, hemorrhoidectomy in Mexico can offer effective outcomes with substantial savings.

The medical team was great
The medical team was great, the hospital was top notch. Dr. Pliego was available online throughout the entire process (both pre and post surgery) and the surgery went smoothly.
Even though Dr. Pliego was in another surgery when I was released from the hospital, I appreciated the hospital was able to provide my prescription for both antibiotics and pain medicine so I was able to leave and recover in our Air BnB s I was ready to leave the hospital.
I signed a lot of paperwork that wasn't in english.
