Laser liposuction in Mexico: Pros and Cons

Laser liposuction in Mexico can offer significant cost savings, but it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Pros Cons
Lower costs. Laser liposuction in Mexico costs $2,000–$4,000 versus $5,000–$8,000 in the US, with savings of 40–60%. Safety concerns. Potential risks include infection (2–4%), burns, or contour irregularities. These risks are similar to rates in the US when performed by qualified surgeons.
Qualified surgeons. Surgeons are certified by the Mexican Council of Plastic Surgery (CMCPER), often with US or European training and 10+ years’ experience in body contouring procedures. Follow-up care. Post-op visits may be less convenient if complications arise after returning home, but many clinics offer virtual follow-up and detailed discharge plans.
Modern facilities. Clinics use FDA-approved laser systems (e.g., Cynosure, Lumenis) and are accredited by JCI or ISO, matching international standards. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS standards differ from the FDA, but top clinics comply with JCI or ISO and use FDA-aligned protocols.
Minimally invasive recovery. Laser liposuction typically results in less bruising and faster recovery compared to traditional methods, with most patients resuming light activities within a week. Travel-related risks. Traveling soon after surgery may increase risk of complications like blood clots, but clinics provide guidance on safe travel timing.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. When performed by qualified specialists in accredited facilities, laser liposuction in Mexico can offer safe and affordable results.

I like how fast and easy it was from the start. The surgical facility was small but worked fine. I did not like the post op care. The night nurse was terrible. Her patients were not a priority. Post op care was not made clear. I would have preferred more detailed instructions on after care. I was left guessing about bandages, sprays, medications and scar treatment. Doctor repaired a hernia, of which I was grateful, but would have preferred to have price list in case this occurred so I could have been prepared financially. I felt like price was just made up. So I don't know if I was overcharged. I liked Mexicali as it was a nice quiet clean town. All in all experience was not bad and the price was affordable.
