"I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people
I have breast cancer and I went through chemotherapy in Moscow. Six sessions have passed. It was very difficult to tolerate these procedures. A doctor in Kazakhstan said that this is enough, it is necessary to switch to tableted chemistry. And Moscow offered to continue doing chemotherapy. Opinions are divided. It was necessary to find a third party. I accidentally found your site on the Internet. Ekaterina Koliko wrote very quickly. The benevolence of Katyusha was immediately arranged towards her. She asked me what I would like to go to. I said that I want to go to the Severance clinic in Korea. Katyusha approved my choice. I sent all the necessary documents and Katyusha quickly redirected everything to the clinic. They began to wait for the invitation. For some reason (and for what I already knew in the clinic), there was no invitation. I am very grateful to Katyusha that she was in touch all the time, supported me, gave me hope. We arrived in Seoul in the morning, we were met by a transfer, brought to the hotel. After lunch, they were already in the clinic, I began to take tests. Constantly with me was one of the translators. Girls translators are great fellows, these are Lida, Olesya, Sofia, Tatyana, Alena. Any question could be addressed, they always prompted. They are professionals. Always with a smile, polite, with enormous patience, and most importantly, they understand that they work with a special audience, with people who did not come to rest. Someone to find out the diagnosis, and someone to do the operation. Thank you so much to the girls. The clinic was impressive. Doctors are professionals. The equipment is super. I got the opinion of a third party, it coincided with the opinion of a doctor from Kazakhstan. I was prescribed a prescription, I bought medicines at the pharmacy and started drinking on arrival home. I also want to write about Darina, who was engaged in transfer (the transfer to the clinic was very convenient and met and carried out), the selection of the hotel was also always in touch, and if I had any questions, she quickly answered them. I want to say that I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people. I am grateful to the Almighty and all who were near me. And the words of the doctor gave me inspiration and inspired great hope, for the sake of these words it was worth a long way to go. Once again, many thanks to all.

My recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable
Good day! I would like to share my impressions of being in the clinic. Thanks to the coordinators, the staff of the international clinic center, all wishes were taken into account. Special thanks to the attending physician, the procedure was perfect, the staff is very attentive, courteous. They are located in a 5-bed room, but at the same time there is no discomfort, food can be chosen taking into account personal taste preferences (Korean, European cuisine) and at the same time satisfying and varied. I can say one thing, there is no limit to my gratitude, my recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable.

"The results were unbelievably positive!"
The staff is nice, but everything is on stream, as it does not take my problem seriously, as much as I would like! After my husband insistently said that it would be necessary to do so, so this, then after that we were heard.

FAQ about Laparoscopic mesorectumrctonomy in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How common is laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer in South Korea?

Laparoscopic surgery is the primary standard of care for rectal cancer in South Korea, accounting for over 80% of resections. High-volume centers in Seoul utilize minimally invasive techniques for approximately 90% of cases, significantly exceeding adoption rates in the United States and Europe.

  • Standard approach: Laparoscopic mesorectal excision is the primary choice at major South Korean oncology centers.
  • Surgical volume: Leading surgeons typically perform over 50 specific cases annually to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Hospital stay: Patients generally stay 3 to 7 days, compared to 14 days for open surgery.
  • Clinical success: Korean trials confirm long-term survival rates for laparoscopy equal those of open procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier facilities like Seoul National University Hospital shows a shift where robotic systems now handle nearly 30% of complex rectal cases. While traditional laparoscopy remains dominant, surgeons prefer robotic dexterity for narrow pelvic dissections to better preserve local nerve functions.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the focus on early mobility which often leads to discharge within 5 days. Many recommend arranging post-operative support early as South Korean rehabilitation emphasizes rapid movement and walking.

How do survival rates in Korea compare to other countries?

South Korea maintains the worlds highest five-year survival rates for colorectal cancer at 74.3%, significantly outperforming most OECD nations. Specialized centers in Seoul utilize advanced laparoscopic mesorectal excision to achieve superior oncological outcomes for stage II and III patients through high-volume surgical expertise and nationwide screening.

  • Cancer survival: Korea leads OECD rankings for stomach (77.9%) and colorectal (74.3%) five-year survival rates.
  • Acute care: Stroke 30-day mortality is 3.3%, which is twice as effective as OECD averages.
  • Surgical volume: Asan Medical Center performs over 65,000 operations annually, ensuring high surgeon proficiency levels.
  • Life expectancy: National longevity reaches 84.5 years, ranking 3rd globally due to proactive medical interventions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea's survival dominance stems from extreme centralization of surgical volume in Seoul. Clinics like Seoul National University Hospital and Asan Medical Center handle thousands of TME cases annually. This concentration allows surgeons to surpass the critical 50-case yearly threshold where complication rates drop significantly.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that outcomes in top Seoul centers consistently match or exceed Western benchmarks. Many emphasize that surgeon experience with laparoscopic techniques is the most vital factor for long-term recovery.

What are the main benefits of the laparoscopic approach?

Laparoscopic surgery offers superior clinical outcomes through small 0.5 to 1.5 cm incisions and high-definition visualization. Key benefits include significantly reduced postoperative pain, minimal scarring, and faster recovery. Patients typically return to work within 14 days while maintaining lower infection risks and minimal blood loss.

  • Recovery speed: Patients often achieve discharge within 3 to 7 days post-surgery.
  • Pain management: Smaller incisions reduce muscle trauma and the need for opioid medications.
  • Clinical safety: Specialized Korean centers report infection rates under 2% for several procedures.
  • Surgical precision: High-definition 3D cameras allow surgeons to perform intricate maneuvers with accuracy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume Seoul centers like Asan Medical Center and SNUH perform thousands of procedures annually, leading to exceptional technical proficiency. Our data indicates that top Korean surgeons maintain laparoscopic conversion rates below 10%. Patients should prioritize clinics with KOIHA or JCI accreditation to ensure these safety benchmarks are met.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently highlight that incisions heal almost invisibly compared to open surgery. Many find that walking early helps manage temporary gas bloating, which is a common post-operative reality.

Is robotic surgery better than laparoscopic TME?

Robotic total mesorectal excision (TME) offers superior 3D visualization and wristed dexterity compared to laparoscopic methods, though long-term oncological outcomes remain comparable. Robotic platforms significantly reduce conversion rates to open surgery, especially for patients with a high BMI or a narrow male pelvis.

  • Conversion rates: Robotic assistance significantly lowers the risk of switching to open surgery during complex cases.
  • Functional recovery: Enhanced 3D magnification helps surgeons preserve pelvic nerves, potentially improving urinary and sexual function.
  • Oncological quality: Both techniques achieve similar success in lymph node harvest and complete specimen removal.
  • Hospital stay: Robotic procedures often lead to shorter stays and fewer minor postoperative complications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier Seoul facilities like Asan Medical Center and Severance Hospital shows a specialized focus on robotic infrastructure. While laparoscopic surgery is standard for 80% of cases, South Korean centers utilize robotic systems to navigate the anatomical challenges of a narrow male pelvis. Patients should prioritize robotic TME specifically for low-seated rectal tumors where space is extremely limited.

Patient Consensus: Patients often report less immediate pain and a faster return to work within 2 weeks. Many emphasize choosing a surgeon with a high annual robotic case volume to ensure technical precision translates into better recovery.

What is the `open conversion` rate in Korean hospitals?

The open conversion rate in Korean hospitals generally ranges from 0.2% to 13.3% depending on the procedure and technology. For colorectal cancer surgeries like laparoscopic mesorectal excision, high-volume centers report a conversion rate of approximately 4.5%, significantly lower than many Western medical cohorts.

  • Colorectal surgery: National data shows a 4.5% conversion rate with 84.7% minimally invasive adoption.
  • Gastric procedures: Complex laparoscopic gastrectomy reaches 13.3% while robotic methods drop to 0.19%.
  • Cholecystectomy: Specialized Korean centers report rates between 0.49% and 5.2% for gallbladder removal.
  • Risk factors: Conversion likelihood increases with prior abdominal surgeries, advanced tumor stages, or obesity.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier facilities like Seoul National University Hospital and Asan Medical Center shows that surgeon volume is the strongest predictor of success. Surgeons performing over 50 laparoscopic mesorectal cases annually maintain single-digit conversion rates. Choosing these high-volume tertiary hospitals, which treat over 10,000 daily outpatients, typically ensures access to the most experienced surgical teams.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while a conversion extends hospital stays to 10 days, long-term survival outcomes remain comparable to laparoscopic completion. Many emphasize asking surgeons directly for their personal success rates relative to specific tumor stages.

Where are these surgeries typically performed?

Laparoscopic mesorectumectomy in the Republic of Korea is performed at JCI-accredited university hospitals and multidisciplinary medical centers in Seoul. These high-volume facilities specialize in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, providing essential inpatient monitoring and advanced digital imaging.

  • University hospitals: Major centers like Asan Medical Center provide multidisciplinary oncology teams.
  • Digital facilities: Seoul National University Bundang Hospital uses paperless systems for error-free care.
  • Accredited centers: Severance Hospital maintains Joint Commission International (JCI) standards for international patients.
  • Inpatient stay: Complex abdominal surgeries require hospitalization for 7 to 10 days post-operatively.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Top-tier Korean hospitals like Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) handle massive patient volumes, often exceeding 10,000 daily. This immense scale leads to high specialization, with some centers performing over 500 mesorectumectomies annually. Patients should choose these high-volume `smart hospitals` to access the lowest recurrence rates and advanced robotic platforms.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the presence of English-speaking coordinators at major Seoul clinics to navigate the complex paperwork. Many recommend verifying that your surgeon performs at least 50 cases annually to ensure the best outcomes.
