"I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people
I have breast cancer and I went through chemotherapy in Moscow. Six sessions have passed. It was very difficult to tolerate these procedures. A doctor in Kazakhstan said that this is enough, it is necessary to switch to tableted chemistry. And Moscow offered to continue doing chemotherapy. Opinions are divided. It was necessary to find a third party. I accidentally found your site on the Internet. Ekaterina Koliko wrote very quickly. The benevolence of Katyusha was immediately arranged towards her. She asked me what I would like to go to. I said that I want to go to the Severance clinic in Korea. Katyusha approved my choice. I sent all the necessary documents and Katyusha quickly redirected everything to the clinic. They began to wait for the invitation. For some reason (and for what I already knew in the clinic), there was no invitation. I am very grateful to Katyusha that she was in touch all the time, supported me, gave me hope. We arrived in Seoul in the morning, we were met by a transfer, brought to the hotel. After lunch, they were already in the clinic, I began to take tests. Constantly with me was one of the translators. Girls translators are great fellows, these are Lida, Olesya, Sofia, Tatyana, Alena. Any question could be addressed, they always prompted. They are professionals. Always with a smile, polite, with enormous patience, and most importantly, they understand that they work with a special audience, with people who did not come to rest. Someone to find out the diagnosis, and someone to do the operation. Thank you so much to the girls. The clinic was impressive. Doctors are professionals. The equipment is super. I got the opinion of a third party, it coincided with the opinion of a doctor from Kazakhstan. I was prescribed a prescription, I bought medicines at the pharmacy and started drinking on arrival home. I also want to write about Darina, who was engaged in transfer (the transfer to the clinic was very convenient and met and carried out), the selection of the hotel was also always in touch, and if I had any questions, she quickly answered them. I want to say that I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people. I am grateful to the Almighty and all who were near me. And the words of the doctor gave me inspiration and inspired great hope, for the sake of these words it was worth a long way to go. Once again, many thanks to all.

My recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable
Good day! I would like to share my impressions of being in the clinic. Thanks to the coordinators, the staff of the international clinic center, all wishes were taken into account. Special thanks to the attending physician, the procedure was perfect, the staff is very attentive, courteous. They are located in a 5-bed room, but at the same time there is no discomfort, food can be chosen taking into account personal taste preferences (Korean, European cuisine) and at the same time satisfying and varied. I can say one thing, there is no limit to my gratitude, my recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable.

"The results were unbelievably positive!"
The staff is nice, but everything is on stream, as it does not take my problem seriously, as much as I would like! After my husband insistently said that it would be necessary to do so, so this, then after that we were heard.

FAQ about Laser surgery in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is laser eye surgery safe in Korea?

Laser eye surgery in Korea is exceptionally safe due to world-class technology and rigorous screening. Clinics typically reject 20-30% of candidates to prevent complications like corneal ectasia. Surgeons often perform over 20,000 procedures, utilizing advanced systems like the ZEISS VisuMax 800 before many Western providers.

  • Extensive screening: Clinics perform up to 60 diagnostic tests including mandatory DNA and corneal mapping.
  • Advanced technology: Facilities use fast femtosecond lasers that significantly reduce flap-related surgical complications.
  • Clinical credentials: Top Seoul centers hold JCI and KOIHA accreditations for international safety standards.
  • High volume: Surgeons maintain 99% satisfaction rates by performing thousands of annual specialized procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek the lowest price, the safest choice in Seoul involves clinics that prioritize conservative screening. Bookimed data shows high-volume centers like Severance Hospital, which serves 1.6 million outpatients, maintain lower complication rates by strictly enforcing minimum corneal thickness limits that exceed standard requirements.

Patient Consensus: Most patients report achieving perfect vision with minimal pain and returning to work within 2 days. While dry eyes are common initially, strict adherence to preservative-free drops ensures a smooth recovery for the vast majority.

What is the difference between LASIK, SMILE, and LASEK?

LASIK, SMILE, and LASEK differ in how they access the cornea to correct vision. LASIK creates a corneal flap, SMILE uses a tiny keyhole incision to remove tissue, and LASEK treats the surface after loosening the outer layer. Each method impacts recovery speed and suitability for specific eye shapes.

  • LASIK approach: Surgeons create a circular flap to reshape tissue, offering clear vision within hours.
  • SMILE technique: A flapless, minimally invasive procedure using a 2–4mm incision to treat nearsightedness.
  • LASEK method: The outer epithelial layer is moved aside, making it safe for thin corneas.
  • Recovery timeline: LASIK and SMILE allow 1–3 day recovery, while LASEK requires up to 7 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While LASIK remains popular, Seoul clinics like Severance Hospital increasingly favor SMILE for its structural benefits. SMILE preserves more corneal strength by avoiding a large flap. Data shows it reduces post-operative dry eye rates to under 5% compared to 20–40% with traditional LASIK.

Patient Consensus: Patients often recommend getting a topography scan early to rule out LASIK if you have thin corneas. Those choosing LASEK advise stocking up on painkillers, as the first few days of recovery are notably more intense.

How long must I stay in Korea for the procedure?

Most patients require a 7 to 10 day stay in Republic of Korea for laser surgery. This timeframe covers the initial procedure, essential post-operative checkups, and a safety buffer before flying. Specialized centers in Seoul typically schedule follow-up exams between days 3 and 7 post-surgery.

  • Procedure timeline: Surgery usually occurs on day 1 or 2 after your arrival.
  • Follow-up exams: Mandatory clinical evaluations typically happen between postoperative days 3 and 7.
  • Flight safety: Medical experts recommend avoiding air travel for at least 5 days post-op.
  • Extended recovery: Plan for 10 to 14 days if treating complex conditions or haze.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from high-volume centers like Severance Hospital and JK Plastic Surgery Center shows a trend toward rapid recovery. While many patients feel stable within 48 hours, those who book flexible return flights report higher satisfaction. Secular clinics in Seoul often perform over 6,000 procedures annually, leading to highly standardized, efficient recovery protocols that rarely exceed 10 days.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the need for a 2-day buffer for jet lag before the procedure. Most suggest prioritizing clinics with dedicated English-speaking post-op support to manage common side effects like temporary dry eyes.

Can I fly immediately after surgery?

Flying immediately after laser surgery in the Republic of Korea is generally discouraged for 24 to 72 hours. Most Korean specialists recommend waiting 3 to 7 days to avoid complications like flap displacement or severe dryness caused by low cabin humidity and shifting atmospheric pressure.

  • Wait time: Standard LASIK or SMILE patients typically require 3 to 5 days.
  • PRK recovery: Patients undergoing PRK should plan at least 7 days before flying.
  • Pressure risks: Cabin pressure changes can lead to eye pain or structural displacement.
  • Post-op care: Korean clinics often provide essential day-after and week-after follow-up exams.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Top Seoul clinics like JK Plastic Surgery Center and Severance Hospital emphasize the day-after check-up. This exam is critical for clearing international patients to fly safely. High-volume centers often provide specific medical certificates for airlines to ensure a smooth boarding process. Scheduling your return flight for day 5 or 6 maximizes safety and recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients often report manageable dryness when using preservative-free drops during flights. Many recommend staying in Seoul for 5 days to complete all follow-up appointments comfortably.

Do I need a Korean ID or special visa?

No Korean ID is required for laser surgery. International patients typically enter the Republic of Korea using a standard tourist visa or a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA). Most procedures are completed within a single day, fitting easily into the 90-day visa-free stay period for many nationalities.

  • Entry documents: Valid passports and K-ETA are sufficient for most Western citizens.
  • Stay duration: Standard 90-day tourist entries accommodate recovery and follow-up schedules.
  • Legal identification: You must carry your original physical passport for all clinic registrations.
  • Medical registration: Clinics like JK Plastic Surgery Center handle all specialized medical paperwork.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Internal data shows high success for international patients at JCI-accredited centers like Severance Hospital. While no government ID is needed, some clinics issue temporary internal medical cards. These cards streamline your check-ins and link directly to your passport via secure portals. This ensures your surgical records remain accessible without requiring local residency status.

Patient Consensus: Travelers find that standard tourist entry works perfectly without any visa complications. Most patients emphasize bringing their physical passport to every appointment rather than just digital copies.

What should I avoid after a skin laser procedure?

After a skin laser procedure, you must avoid direct sun exposure, high heat, and active skincare ingredients to protect the healing barrier. Preventing irritation is critical for avoiding permanent hyperpigmentation and scarring while the skin regenerates in JCI-accredited Seoul facilities like Severance Hospital.

  • Sun exposure: Avoid UV rays for 4 weeks; even 10 minutes can cause permanent pigment changes.
  • Heat sources: Skip saunas, jjimjilbangs, and hot showers for 14 days to prevent inflammation.
  • Active ingredients: Stop using retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids for 2 weeks post-treatment.
  • Physical irritation: Do not pick peeling skin or use facial scrubs while the area heals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many patients expect immediate results, Bookimed data shows that premium Korean clinics like JK Plastic Surgery Center emphasize a 4-week stabilization period. Specialized hydration and barrier repair products are often more effective than standard multi-step routines during this recovery phase. Choosing a clinic with high patient volumes, such as those serving 6,000+ internationals annually, usually ensures you receive more comprehensive post-laser cooling protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that skipping even one application of SPF 50+ in the Korean summer can trigger lasting redness. Most recommend simplifying your routine to just a gentle cleanser and heavy moisturizer to ensure the best aesthetic outcome.

Is there any support for English speakers?

Top laser surgery clinics in South Korea provide dedicated English-speaking support for international patients. Major centers in Seoul like JK Plastic Surgery Center and Severance Hospital employ bilingual coordinators. These specialists assist with consultations, medical documentation, and post-operative care instructions in English.

  • Bilingual staff: Many surgeons at JCI-accredited facilities received international training.
  • Translation services: Clinics provide English-translated consent forms and medical reports.
  • Personal coordinators: Dedicated staff assist with airport pickups and scheduling.
  • Communication tools: Support often includes WhatsApp or KakaoTalk follow-up services.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While large hospitals like Severance Hospital serve 4 million patients annually with robust infrastructure, smaller boutique clinics in Gangnam often provide more personalized 1-on-1 English coordination. We have found that these specialized centers typically offer faster response times for English inquiries via mobile apps.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend downloading the Papago translation app as a backup for navigating areas outside the clinic. Most report that English-speaking surgeons make the consultation process smooth and professional.
