How Much Does Thyroid resection Cost in Republic of Korea?

Thyroid resection in the Republic of Korea typically costs from $5,000 to $11,800. The final price depends on the surgical technique, the disease stage, and the hospital location. Patients save around 68% compared to the US, where this procedure costs $26,500 on average. Packages often include preoperative diagnostics, anesthesia, the surgical procedure, and a short hospital stay.

  • Hemithyroidectomy: $5,000 to $11,800 for the partial removal of one thyroid lobe.
  • Total thyroidectomy: typically ranges 20-30% higher than partial resection due to increased surgical complexity.
  • Robotic oral surgery: adds a premium for scarless results using advanced robotic systems through the mouth.
  • Regional variations: Seoul medical centers often charge 20% more than facilities in cities like Incheon.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a Seoul-based center provides access to world-first techniques like scarless robotic oral surgery. Korea University Anam Hospital pioneered this method, reducing scar size to 1/10th of traditional surgery. For those seeking value, Samsung Medical Center offers all-inclusive diagnostic and surgery packages around $14,250. This avoids separate billing for PET/CT scans and preoperative tests, which simplifies budgeting for international patients.

"I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people
I have breast cancer and I went through chemotherapy in Moscow. Six sessions have passed. It was very difficult to tolerate these procedures. A doctor in Kazakhstan said that this is enough, it is necessary to switch to tableted chemistry. And Moscow offered to continue doing chemotherapy. Opinions are divided. It was necessary to find a third party. I accidentally found your site on the Internet. Ekaterina Koliko wrote very quickly. The benevolence of Katyusha was immediately arranged towards her. She asked me what I would like to go to. I said that I want to go to the Severance clinic in Korea. Katyusha approved my choice. I sent all the necessary documents and Katyusha quickly redirected everything to the clinic. They began to wait for the invitation. For some reason (and for what I already knew in the clinic), there was no invitation. I am very grateful to Katyusha that she was in touch all the time, supported me, gave me hope. We arrived in Seoul in the morning, we were met by a transfer, brought to the hotel. After lunch, they were already in the clinic, I began to take tests. Constantly with me was one of the translators. Girls translators are great fellows, these are Lida, Olesya, Sofia, Tatyana, Alena. Any question could be addressed, they always prompted. They are professionals. Always with a smile, polite, with enormous patience, and most importantly, they understand that they work with a special audience, with people who did not come to rest. Someone to find out the diagnosis, and someone to do the operation. Thank you so much to the girls. The clinic was impressive. Doctors are professionals. The equipment is super. I got the opinion of a third party, it coincided with the opinion of a doctor from Kazakhstan. I was prescribed a prescription, I bought medicines at the pharmacy and started drinking on arrival home. I also want to write about Darina, who was engaged in transfer (the transfer to the clinic was very convenient and met and carried out), the selection of the hotel was also always in touch, and if I had any questions, she quickly answered them. I want to say that I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people. I am grateful to the Almighty and all who were near me. And the words of the doctor gave me inspiration and inspired great hope, for the sake of these words it was worth a long way to go. Once again, many thanks to all.

My recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable
Good day! I would like to share my impressions of being in the clinic. Thanks to the coordinators, the staff of the international clinic center, all wishes were taken into account. Special thanks to the attending physician, the procedure was perfect, the staff is very attentive, courteous. They are located in a 5-bed room, but at the same time there is no discomfort, food can be chosen taking into account personal taste preferences (Korean, European cuisine) and at the same time satisfying and varied. I can say one thing, there is no limit to my gratitude, my recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable.

"The results were unbelievably positive!"
The staff is nice, but everything is on stream, as it does not take my problem seriously, as much as I would like! After my husband insistently said that it would be necessary to do so, so this, then after that we were heard.

FAQ about Thyroid resection in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the main scar-minimizing thyroidectomy options used in South Korea?

South Korea uses robotic and endoscopic techniques like the Bilateral Axilla-Breast Approach (BABA) and transoral methods to eliminate visible neck scars. These advanced procedures move incisions to the armpits, breasts, or inside the lower lip, ensuring zero external scarring on the neck for thyroidectomy patients.

  • Robotic BABA: Uses four small incisions in armpits and breast areolae for symmetrical thyroid access.
  • Transoral approach: Removes the thyroid through the lower lip, leaving no visible external marks.
  • Transaxillary technique: Hides a single incision in the armpit, often assisted by da Vinci robots.
  • Scar management: Employs post-operative lasers and Botox to minimize redness and prevent scar widening.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea University Anam Hospital developed the world's first robotic oral thyroid surgery, which reduces scar size by 90% compared to traditional methods. While these robotic procedures take 3–4 hours, clinics like Ewha Womans University Medical Center specifically focus on these aesthetic outcomes for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while armpit soreness is common after transaxillary surgery, the trade-off for a scar-free neck is worth the 1–2 week recovery period.

What success and complication rates can patients expect from Korean high-volume centers?

South Korean high-volume centers report a 98% success rate for thyroid resection, with permanent complication rates under 1%. Specialized facilities like Asan Medical Center perform over 2,000 cases annually, maintaining recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy rates between 0.2% and 0.5%, significantly lower than global averages.

  • Success rates: The KORCAM registry confirms success rates exceeding 98% for Korean thyroidectomy procedures.
  • Nerve safety: Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy rates reach 0.2% officially at top Seoul hospitals.
  • Hypoparathyroidism risk: Permanent hypoparathyroidism stays below 1% compared to 5% to 10% global averages.
  • Quick recovery: Standard protocols allow for next-day discharge following a total thyroidectomy procedure.
  • Innovative techniques: Robotic oral thyroid surgery pioneered in Korea ensures outcomes with no visible scarring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea University Anam Hospital and Gachon University Gil Medical Center pioneered robotic oral thyroid surgery. This method reduces scar size by 90% compared to traditional neck incisions. While safety is the priority, these high-volume centers uniquely prioritize aesthetic outcomes without compromising their 98% success benchmark.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the speed of recovery, often returning home the day after surgery. While temporary voice hoarseness affects about 5% of people, most emphasize that it resolves quickly within weeks.

Why is South Korea regarded as a world leader in thyroid surgery?

South Korea leads thyroid surgery through pioneering robotic techniques like BABA and transaxillary approaches that eliminate visible neck scars. High surgical volumes from national screening programs allow surgeons to perform over 500 cases annually, resulting in survival rates approaching 100 percent and superior voice preservation.

  • Robotic innovation: Korean surgeons developed the world's first gasless transaxillary and robotic oral thyroidectomies.
  • Expertise volume: Institutions like Severance Hospital and Yonsei perform over 10,000 robotic thyroid surgeries.
  • Aesthetic focus: Clinics like Ewha Womans University Medical Center specialize in scarless results for international patients.
  • Advanced monitoring: Surgeons use intraoperative neuromonitoring to ensure laryngeal nerve safety and protect patient speech.

Bookimed Expert Insight: The experience gap here is significant for patient safety. While a high-volume Western surgeon handles 50 cases yearly, specialists at centers like Gachon University Gil Medical Center often triple that volume. This repetition refines `bloodless` techniques, which reduces post-operative swelling and accelerates discharge times compared to global averages.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently highlight the efficiency of dedicated international departments and the relief of having pathology reports shipped globally for follow-up care. Many appreciate that cosmetic outcomes receive the same clinical priority as cancer removal.

What non-surgical alternatives to thyroid resection are available for benign nodules or low-risk recurrences?

Non-surgical alternatives in the Republic of Korea include Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), ethanol ablation, and active surveillance. These minimally invasive therapies preserve thyroid function while reducing nodule volume by 50–80%. Leading Seoul centers like Severance Hospital and Asan Medical Center utilize these ultrasound-guided outpatient procedures.

  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): Gold standard for solid benign nodules using thermal energy to shrink tissue.
  • Ethanol ablation (PEI): Primary treatment for fluid-filled cystic nodules to induce rapid cell dehydration.
  • Active surveillance: Periodic ultrasound monitoring every 6–12 months for stable, asymptomatic benign nodules.
  • Radioactive iodine (RAI): Non-surgical medical treatment used to ablate residual tissue in low-risk recurrences.

Bookimed Expert Insight: South Korea is a global pioneer in thyroid preservation. While many countries still favor surgery, Korean institutions like Korea University Anam Hospital developed world-first robotic methods and refined RFA protocols. This high volume of specialized cases—Asan Medical Center alone sees over 11,800 outpatients daily—results in exceptional precision during thermal ablation.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize prioritizing active surveillance and frequent ultrasound monitoring before considering any intervention. Many report choosing RFA at major Korean centers specifically to avoid visible neck scars and maintain long-term thyroid hormone production.

Who is a good candidate for robotic/remote-access thyroidectomy versus conventional open surgery?

Ideal candidates for robotic thyroidectomy in Republic of Korea are patients under 50 with benign nodules smaller than 4 cm who prioritize scar avoidance. This remote-access approach suits individuals without previous neck radiation or major surgery who seek to hide incisions in the armpit, breast, or mouth.

  • Nodule size: Best for benign nodules typically under 4 to 6 cm in maximum dimension.
  • Aesthetic priority: Patients with high cosmetic concerns or a history of prominent keloid scarring.
  • Physical criteria: Requires a body mass index under 50 and full shoulder range of motion.
  • Cancer stage: Conventional open surgery remains the standard for advanced cancer or large metastases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea University Anam Hospital pioneered a world-first robotic oral method that leaves zero external scars. While robotic procedures takes over 4 hours compared to 90 minutes for open surgery, Korean facilities like Severance Hospital maintain the highest cancer treatment statistics in the country.

Patient Consensus: Patients report life-changing results from scarless techniques but note that robotic surgery costs are significantly higher. Some mention temporary numbness in the arm after transaxillary procedures, though most return to work within 5 days.

What does recovery and aftercare look like after thyroid resection in Korea?

Recovery after thyroid resection in Korea involves a 1 to 3 day hospital stay for close monitoring of calcium levels and airway stability. Most patients return to desk work within 2 to 3 weeks. Advanced robotic oral techniques often eliminate external visible scarring entirely.

  • Hospital admission: Expect 1 to 3 days stay for aggressive post-operative monitoring and pain management.
  • Activity restrictions: Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are restricted for 4 to 6 weeks minimum.
  • Dietary care: Soft foods like juk are recommended initially to manage common swallowing discomfort.
  • Hormonal management: Total thyroidectomy patients begin levothyroxine immediately with blood tests every 4 to 6 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea University Anam Hospital pioneered the worlds first robotic oral thyroid surgery. This method is a game-changer for patients prioritizing aesthetics. It allows tumor removal through the mouth, leaving zero scars on the neck while maintaining high oncological success rates.

Patient Consensus: Patients often feel functional within 48 hours but report common neck tightness and tingling. Many emphasize that Korean surgeons provide comprehensive scar care kits, including silicone sheets, once the incision seals.
