"I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people
I have breast cancer and I went through chemotherapy in Moscow. Six sessions have passed. It was very difficult to tolerate these procedures. A doctor in Kazakhstan said that this is enough, it is necessary to switch to tableted chemistry. And Moscow offered to continue doing chemotherapy. Opinions are divided. It was necessary to find a third party. I accidentally found your site on the Internet. Ekaterina Koliko wrote very quickly. The benevolence of Katyusha was immediately arranged towards her. She asked me what I would like to go to. I said that I want to go to the Severance clinic in Korea. Katyusha approved my choice. I sent all the necessary documents and Katyusha quickly redirected everything to the clinic. They began to wait for the invitation. For some reason (and for what I already knew in the clinic), there was no invitation. I am very grateful to Katyusha that she was in touch all the time, supported me, gave me hope. We arrived in Seoul in the morning, we were met by a transfer, brought to the hotel. After lunch, they were already in the clinic, I began to take tests. Constantly with me was one of the translators. Girls translators are great fellows, these are Lida, Olesya, Sofia, Tatyana, Alena. Any question could be addressed, they always prompted. They are professionals. Always with a smile, polite, with enormous patience, and most importantly, they understand that they work with a special audience, with people who did not come to rest. Someone to find out the diagnosis, and someone to do the operation. Thank you so much to the girls. The clinic was impressive. Doctors are professionals. The equipment is super. I got the opinion of a third party, it coincided with the opinion of a doctor from Kazakhstan. I was prescribed a prescription, I bought medicines at the pharmacy and started drinking on arrival home. I also want to write about Darina, who was engaged in transfer (the transfer to the clinic was very convenient and met and carried out), the selection of the hotel was also always in touch, and if I had any questions, she quickly answered them. I want to say that I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people. I am grateful to the Almighty and all who were near me. And the words of the doctor gave me inspiration and inspired great hope, for the sake of these words it was worth a long way to go. Once again, many thanks to all.

My recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable
Good day! I would like to share my impressions of being in the clinic. Thanks to the coordinators, the staff of the international clinic center, all wishes were taken into account. Special thanks to the attending physician, the procedure was perfect, the staff is very attentive, courteous. They are located in a 5-bed room, but at the same time there is no discomfort, food can be chosen taking into account personal taste preferences (Korean, European cuisine) and at the same time satisfying and varied. I can say one thing, there is no limit to my gratitude, my recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable.

"The results were unbelievably positive!"
The staff is nice, but everything is on stream, as it does not take my problem seriously, as much as I would like! After my husband insistently said that it would be necessary to do so, so this, then after that we were heard.

FAQ about Wedge Resection in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which are the top hospitals for wedge resection in South Korea?

The top hospitals for wedge resection in South Korea include Samsung Medical Center, Asan Medical Center, and Seoul National University Hospital. These JCI-accredited facilities lead globally in thoracic oncology, utilizing advanced robotic-assisted systems and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) to ensure high success rates and rapid patient recovery.

  • Asan Medical Center: Korea's largest hospital performs over 65,000 annual operations with advanced thoracic expertise.
  • Severance Hospital: A JCI-accredited facility treating 1.6 million outpatients with specialized robotic oncology centers.
  • SNU Bundang Hospital: Recognized as the first digital hospital using AI-driven precision for surgical safety.
  • Samsung Medical Center: Ranked 3rd globally for oncology, featuring high-volume experience in complex robotic resections.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While top-tier centers like Asan Medical Center handle massive volumes, Ewha Womans University Medical Center offers a unique advantage for female patients. Their multidisciplinary team focuses on aesthetic outcomes, specifically using smaller incisions to minimize visible scarring without compromising oncological safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize selecting thoracic departments exceeding 100 VATS procedures annually for better outcomes. Most travelers report a 4-day discharge timeline and suggest coordinating with international desks 3 months in advance.

How does wedge resection compare to other lung surgeries performed in Korea?

Wedge resection in South Korea is a lung-sparing, minimally invasive procedure for small peripheral nodules under 2cm. While lobectomy remains the standard for 78% of cases, wedge resection usage doubled recently due to faster recovery times and success rates matching more invasive surgeries for specific early-stage tumors.

  • Surgical approach: Over 94% of Korean lung surgeries utilize Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS).
  • Hospital stay: Patients typically discharge after 3 days compared to 6-10 days for lobectomies.
  • Recovery timeline: Most patients return to work within 2 weeks and resume hiking by week 3.
  • Cost efficiency: Procedures cost $17,900 to $28,800, saving patients approximately _price_percent_discount_% versus US averages.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centers like Asan Medical Center and Severance Hospital perform over 65,000 annual operations, creating an experience gap that favors lung-sparing techniques. Large Korean facilities often bundle PET-CT follow-ups and post-operative lung function tests into the surgical package. This consolidated approach allows international patients to complete cancer staging and recovery oversight in a single 2-week trip.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the precision of Korean VATS, noting that a 1-hour wedge resection allows for much faster mobilization than standard open surgery. Many suggest seeking a second opinion on surgical margins, as top Korean surgeons prioritize cancer control and may switch to segmentectomy if margins are insufficient.

What is the long-term recovery and expected regain of lung function after wedge resection?

Most patients regain 90-100% of their baseline lung function within 6 to 12 months after a wedge resection. Recovery follows a U-shaped curve, where capacity drops for 3 months before improving. Patients typically return to normal walking within 6 weeks and unrestricted hiking by 9 months.

  • Function recovery: Vital capacity often reaches 98.8% of preoperative levels by 1 year.
  • Surgical approach: Minimally invasive VATS allows hospital discharge by day 3 in Seoul clinics.
  • Activity timeline: Patients generally resume daily walking and light activities within 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Long-term monitoring: Pulmonary function tests are scheduled at 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgery.
  • Capacity loss: Multiple resections may decrease spirometry values by 0.6% for each additional wedge.

Bookimed Expert Insight: South Korean centers like Gangnam Severance leverage extensive experience from performing the country's first lung transplants. Data shows that non-smokers and younger patients often hit 100% function regain. Conversely, patients over 70 may stabilize at 90% capacity despite excellent surgical outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Expect lingering chest-tube site discomfort for up to 6 months even after function returns. Consistent pre-operative rehabilitation and smoking cessation typically boost final lung capacity regain by 15%.

In which clinical situations is wedge resection specifically preferred over lobectomy in Korea?

Wedge resection in South Korea is specifically preferred for early-stage lung cancer patients with compromised pulmonary function or high surgical risk. Doctors prioritize this sublobar approach for peripheral nodules under 2 cm and ground-glass opacity lesions where preserving lung tissue outweighs radical lobectomy benefits.

  • Pulmonary function: Preferred if FEV1 is below 50% or severe COPD exists.
  • Tumor characteristics: Indicated for peripheral nodules under 2 cm with low invasiveness.
  • Patient age: Recommended for frail or elderly patients, typically aged 76 or older.
  • Clinical history: Chosen for second primary lung cancers to maximize remaining healthy tissue.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While lobectomy is traditional, Korean centers like Asan Medical Center and Severance Hospital utilize advanced robotic VATS for wedge resections. This specialized expertise allows for faster hospital stays of 3–5 days compared to 7–10 days for standard lobectomy. Choosing high-volume Seoul centers ensures precise margins even in less invasive sublobar procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients with marginal lung health often prioritize wedge resection to maintain post-operative quality of life. Many emphasize confirming tumor location and FEV1 levels with surgeons to ensure suitability for this quicker recovery option.

Are VATS and robotic techniques universally available for wedge resections in Korea?

VATS and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) are widely used in South Korea but are not universally available across all facilities. While VATS accounts for nearly 97% of lung surgeries, advanced robotic systems are concentrated in major tertiary centers located primarily in Seoul.

  • System availability: Nearly 100 Korean hospitals utilize robotic systems for thoracic procedures.
  • Geographic concentration: Over 60% of advanced lung surgeries occur at high-volume Seoul centers.
  • Technique dominance: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) remains the primary minimally invasive method.
  • Specialized options: Leading institutions now offer uniportal robotic and VATS for sub-lobar resections.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier facilities like Asan Medical Center and Severance Hospital shows a massive volume gap compared to provincial sites. Asan alone serves over 11,800 outpatients daily. This high patient turnover means Seoul surgeons often have significantly higher case volumes, which directly correlates with the mastery of robotic wedge resections.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that major Seoul hospitals default to VATS with 1-week recovery times. Others noted that provincial hospitals often stick to traditional methods due to equipment costs.
