"I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital"
I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital. I don't think that there is a hospital in Asia which can compare with this one. From the doctors to the nurses and all other personell in this hospital ALL are competent, very polite and friendly - the only small criticism that I have is that unfortunately many don't speak English very well, that's a great shame.

I am very happy with the treatment I've so far received at Bumrungrad International Hospital. Beginning last year, I've made three separate visits for treatment at the hospital. The staff are extremely professional and efficient using very modern equipment. The cost of treatment is competitive. I would strongly recommend it to other people looking for medical care.

FAQ about Melanoma surgery in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the best hospitals for melanoma treatment in Thailand?

Thailand's leading hospitals for melanoma treatment include Bumrungrad International Hospital and Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital. These facilities offer advanced surgical oncology, immunotherapy like Keytruda, and molecular testing. Patients benefit from Joint Commission International accreditation and specialized centers like the Horizon Regional Cancer Center in Bangkok.

  • Accreditation standards: Bumrungrad holds Global Healthcare Accreditation and Joint Commission International certifications for safety.
  • Treatment range: Hospitals provide Mohs microsurgery, wide local excision, and sentinel lymph node biopsies.
  • Specialized infrastructure: Wattanosoth is Thailand’s first private hospital dedicated solely to oncology and research.
  • Global recognition: Newsweek ranked Bumrungrad among the world’s best specialized hospitals for oncology in 2023.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many private hospitals in Bangkok offer melanoma surgery, specialized centers like Bumrungrad serve over 1 million patients annually. Their high volume of international cases means the medical staff is exceptionally fluent in English and cross-border care coordination. This expertise is vital for managing the complex pathology reports and digital imaging required for follow-up care once you return home.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the significant savings of 40% to 70% compared to US costs. Most emphasize the importance of requesting all pathology reports in digital English formats before departure for seamless home-country surveillance.

What is the success rate for melanoma surgery in Thailand?

Melanoma surgery success rates in Thailand exceed 90% for early-stage primary excisions. Outcomes align with international standards at Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospitals. Survival rates reach 95% to 99% for stage I-II cases, while advanced stages vary based on immunotherapy and multidisciplinary care.

  • Early-stage survival: 5-year survival rates range from 95% to 99% for localized melanoma.
  • Advanced-stage outcomes: Stage III survival is approximately 40% to 70% with surgical intervention.
  • Specialized techniques: Success is optimized using Mohs microsurgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy.
  • Accredited facilities: Top-tier centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital maintain global safety and imaging standards.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success in Thailand often depends on the hospital's capacity for complex staging. Bumrungrad International Hospital treats over 1 million patients annually and uses AI-driven digital imaging. Patients should prioritize clinics with integrated oncology departments rather than standalone surgical centers for better long-term monitoring.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize verifying that surgeons have international training from the US or Europe. Many recommend arranging post-operative imaging and surveillance protocols before leaving Thailand to ensure continuity of care.

What types of surgery are available for melanoma removal?

Melanoma removal primarily involves wide local excision to remove the tumor and healthy skin margins. Specialized approaches like Mohs micrographic surgery target sensitive areas, while sentinel lymph node biopsy determines if cancer has spread. Advanced cases may requires limb-sparing surgery, reconstruction, or metastasectomy.

  • Wide local excision: Standard procedure removing the primary tumor with 1–2 cm margins.
  • Mohs micrographic surgery: Precise layer-by-layer removal used for facial or lentigo maligna melanomas.
  • Lymph node staging: Sentinel lymph node biopsy uses dye mapping to check spread.
  • Reconstructive surgery: Skin grafts or flaps close large wounds to minimize scarring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients prioritize JCI-accredited centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital, which manages over 1 million patients annually. Data shows these top-tier clinics often perform same-day reconstruction immediately following Mohs surgery. This integration reduces total recovery time and improves cosmetic outcomes for facial procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize requesting physical pathology slides to bring home for future second opinions. Many suggest planning a 2–4 week stay to manage recovery in Thailand's tropical climate.

How long is the recovery and hospital stay after melanoma surgery?

Melanoma surgery in Thailand typically requires 0 to 1 night of hospital stay. Most patients undergoing wide local excision or sentinel lymph node biopsy return home the same day. Initial wound healing takes 7 to 14 days, with full recovery and activity resumption within 4 weeks.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 0 to 1 night for most outpatient or minor inpatient procedures.
  • Wound healing: Shallow surgical sites generally heal within 7 to 14 days using steri-strips.
  • Physical restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Suture removal: Surgeons typically remove non-dissolvable stitches between 5 and 14 days post-op.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand’s leading centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital utilize faster clinical protocols with less administrative delay. This efficiency allows 50% of their international patient base to transition from surgery to outpatient recovery within 4 hours. Such streamlined processing minimizes hospital time without compromising global JCI safety standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently report minimal pain manageable with over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen. Many recommend taking daily photos of the wound to track progress and mention that local numbness can persist for several months.
