Prostate brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy used to treat prostate cancer where radioactive sources are placed in the prostate gland. The radiation can kill the cancer cells while causing minor damage to healthy tissue nearby. The overall prostate-specific antigen (PSA) progression-free survival at 10 years is 80-90% for low-risk patients. Many long-term follow-up clinical studies have shown better biochemical disease-free survival after brachytherapy than conventional external-beam radiotherapy and similar survival after radical prostatectomy.
