I found the surgical staff and nurses in operating theatre to be extremely understanding and helpful. I was happy with the surgical procedure but would have liked a little more post-op feedback from the surgeon. Overall, though I was more than satisfied. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the treatment which I received from the nursing staff, especially at night, although I subsequently found out that they are very short staffed while not having at least one English speaking nurse on duty day or night.
Procedure was very good on the day of surgery. Friendly and helpful medical coordinator Friendly nurses during the day. However there was not even one English speaking nurse during every day and every night. The only means of communicating was by phone translator which became tiresome and frustrating.
There needs to be better understanding between the nursing staff and patients. Despite best efforts it all became overwhelming and frustrating. I don’t know why but it was difficult to inform the staff that I was vegetarian. Twice I needed to change the capither myself - seemingly because nurses see it below their station so need to find a nursing assistant to empty the capither bag. To summarise - the medical coordinator was extremely helpful; the care and help by surgical staff and theatre nursing staff was very good. However the treatment from many of the nurses left something to be desired.

I am very satisfied with the choice of this clinic
At the Turan Turan Clinic, I had total hip replacement surgeries on both legs almost simultaneously, two days apart. The operation was categorised as complicated. From the very first days of my stay in the clinic until my discharge I was really surrounded by sincere care and attention of the doctor and medical staff and interpreter. I was placed in a very comfortable ward with everything I needed. The interpreter and assistant in the person of Eldar did not leave me a step and helped with translation, consulted, gave useful advice and literally led me by the hand to the doctors where I was examined, from the X-ray room to the anaesthesiologist before the operation. Preparation for the operation, collection of analyses, their study and consultation with doctor Kayhan Turan took little time. Everything went promptly. The surgery was performed by the head doctor Kayhan Turan himself, who has vast experience in orthopaedic surgeries. With his light hand and high level of professionalism, the two surgeries two days apart were very easy. Smith & Nephew prostheses were fitted. Both operations were performed under spinal anaesthesia, which in my case completely eliminated the unpleasant stage of coming out of anaesthesia. I was conscious during the operations. Subsequent rehabilitation took place in a hospital ward, where special medical simulators were used along with exercises to develop the joint and vessels. I am very satisfied with the choice of this clinic.

Dr
It's now been about 1 1/2 months post surgery and I am pleased with the progress of my recovery. It seems that the implant and hip have aligned themselves nicely with the rest of the leg and foot . I can walk quite well. It seems that improving the strength in my leg will lead to greater recovery. I was pleasantly surprised by the professionalism , knowledge and concern of all people involved ; especially Booki Med med coordinator Dr. Olha who exhibited limitless patience and concern for my problems. The hospital was first rate and those within, I felt, were truly concerned with my situation

The eyelid surgery consult, operation and after was excellent
The MRI with contrast we ordered and paid for did not happen and my wife had to order andbpay for an extra MRI with contrast- something that should've been done at the beginning

FAQ about Total hip replacement for developmental dysplasia of the hip in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the technical challenges of total hip replacement for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)?

Total hip replacement for developmental dysplasia of the hip involves overcoming significant anatomical distortions, specifically bone deficiencies in the socket and abnormal femoral shapes. Surgeons must manage high-riding hip centers, narrow femoral canals, and shortened soft tissues while protecting the sciatic nerve during limb-length correction procedures.

  • Acetabular reconstruction: Surgeons use bone grafts or metallic augments to address deficient superior walls.
  • Anatomic positioning: Placing the cup in the true hip center reduces long-term implant loosening.
  • Femoral deformity: Narrow canals and excessive rotation often require specialized modular or custom-made stems.
  • Nerve protection: Correcting leg-length discrepancies over 3 cm increases risks of sciatic nerve stretching.
  • Soft tissue balancing: Extensive releases of contracted muscles are necessary to restore proper joint biomechanics.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Turkish centers like Professor Gemalmaz show that 3D-printed custom surgical guides and CAD planning are becoming the standard for complex dysplasia. This technology is vital because standard off-the-shelf implants often fail to fit the 38–52 mm range required for dysplastic sockets. Choosing a clinic with internal 3D-modeling capabilities can significantly reduce the traditional 2.5–4 hour operative time, which naturally lowers the infection risks associated with these longer procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that realistic expectations for leg-length correction are vital. While many hope for perfect symmetry, prioritizing nerve safety over total length equality often leads to better functional outcomes without permanent numbness.

What are the long-term success rates and outcomes of THR for DDH patients?

Total hip replacement for developmental dysplasia typically achieves 92% to 98% survivorship at 10 years. Success remains high at 91% after 15 years, though 20-year rates vary between 54.5% and 86.5%. Patients experience significant pain relief and improved mobility through specialized reconstruction techniques.

  • Functional recovery: Harris Hip Scores typically improve from 35 to nearly 88 points post-surgery.
  • Gait improvement: Normal walking patterns increase from 61% to 83% following successful joint reconstruction.
  • Leg alignment: Procedures effectively reduce leg length discrepancies from 1.7 cm to roughly 0.75 cm.
  • Success factors: Uncemented stems and 3D-printed custom implants significantly enhance long-term prosthetic stability.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from high-volume Turkish centers shows a shift toward 3D-printed custom guides and robotic-assisted systems like MAKOplasty to manage complex bone anatomy. Surgeons like Associate Professor Halil Can Gemalmaz specialize in these patient-specific workflows. This precision is vital for developmental dysplasia, as standard implants often fail to fit shallow sockets, leading to earlier revision needs.

Patient Consensus: Patients report high satisfaction with uncemented stems but emphasize the necessity of annual X-rays to monitor socket migration. Pre-operative physical therapy is frequently recommended to strengthen muscles and reduce the higher risk of post-surgical dislocation.

Which physicians in Turkey are most recommended for performing complex DDH hip replacements?

Highly recommended surgeons for complex developmental dysplasia of the hip in Turkey include Dr. Erman Cekic, who has performed approximately 10,000 joint replacements, and Dr. Sami Sokucu at VM Medical Park Florya. These specialists utilize advanced 3D templating and CT-based Crowe classification to manage severe hip deformities.

  • Dr. Erman Cekic: Expert at OrtoCare Orthopedic Clinic with 10,000 successful hip and knee surgeries.
  • Dr. Sami Sokucu: Double board-certified specialist at VM Medical Park Florya focusing on pediatric orthopedics.
  • Dr. Halil Can Gemalmaz: Leading pioneer in 3D patient-specific surgical planning and custom-printed orthopedic implants.
  • Dr. Mehmet Soyarslan: Specialist at Medipol University Pendik trained specifically in developmental hip dysplasia courses.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear distinction between standard clinics and those offering 3D patient-specific planning like Professor Gemalmaz. For complex Crowe type IV cases, choosing a surgeon who uses CAD-assisted planning can significantly reduce the risk of post-operative leg length discrepancies.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize prioritizing high-volume university-affiliated centers in Istanbul or Ankara. They recommend asking surgeons for a specific case count of over 50 complex dysplasia procedures to ensure peak safety.

Which hospitals in Turkey are recognized for treating developmental dysplasia of the hip with joint replacement surgery?

Recognized Turkish hospitals for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) include Memorial Şişli Hospital, Turan Turan Health Group, and Professor Gemalmaz’s clinic. These Joint Commission International-accredited facilities offer advanced solutions like MAKO robotic-assisted surgery and 3D patient-specific planning for complex joint reconstructions.

  • Robotic precision: Turan Turan Health Group has performed 2,000+ robotic hip replacements for complex cases.
  • Custom planning: Professor Gemalmaz utilizes 3D-printed surgical guides for high-precision acetabular positioning in dysplasia.
  • Expert volume: Dr. Erman Cekic at OrtoCare Orthopedic Clinic has performed approximately 10,000 joint replacements.
  • Academic excellence: Medipol University Pendik Hospital provides specialized DDH courses for international orthopedic surgical training.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Istanbul clinics offer standard hip replacements, the 3D-planning approach at Professor Gemalmaz’s clinic is a rare differentiator for severe Crowe type IV dysplasia. Standard implants often fail in shallow dysplastic sockets, but custom-printed guides help surgeons achieve stable fixation that off-the-shelf components might miss.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that surgeon-specific experience with dysplastic hips matters more than the hospital brand. They recommend requesting detailed operative notes and implant specifications before discharge to ensure proper long-term follow-up care.

What services are typically bundled in an all-inclusive medical travel package for hip replacement in Turkey?

All-inclusive hip replacement packages in Turkey bundle surgical fees, FDA-approved implants like Zimmer or Stryker, and preoperative diagnostics into one price. These bundles typically include 4 days of hospitalization with full board, professional nursing care, multilingual patient coordination, and private VIP airport-to-clinic transfers.

  • Medical evaluations: Includes orthopedic consultations, blood work, and necessary preoperative imaging like X-rays.
  • Surgical components: Covers anesthesia, operating room fees, and high-quality prosthetic devices from reputable brands.
  • In-hospital care: Provides 4 days of stay with meals, medications, and initial physiotherapy sessions.
  • Logistical support: Includes dedicated language assistance and coordinated transfers between the airport, hotel, and clinic.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics claim all-inclusive status, our data shows a critical differentiator: hotel stays. For example, packages at Istinye University Hospital cover 4 hospital days but exclude the 5-14 days of post-discharge hotel recovery usually needed for international patients. Always confirm if the quote includes the mandatory local recovery period before you fly.

Patient Consensus: Patients often highlight that while surgery and transfers are seamless, it is vital to budget for extra physiotherapy and post-discharge medications which are rarely included in the base price.
