How Much Does Vitrectomy Cost in Turkey?

Vitrectomy in Turkey typically costs from $2,300 to $3,700 depending on the surgical technique, case complexity, and clinic location. Patients save around 69% compared to the US, where the average price for this eye surgery is approximately $9,800. Most Turkish packages include the surgical procedure, preoperative eye exams, local or general anesthesia, and VIP airport-to-clinic transfers.

  • Standard retinal surgery: $2,300 to $3,700 for basic vitreous removal or simple detachment repair.
  • Vitreolysis: $500 to $1,300 for laser-based treatment of persistent vitreous floaters.
  • Retinopathy of prematurity: $3,500 to $6,500 for specialized neonatal retinal intervention.
  • Geographic variations: Major medical hubs like Istanbul and Antalya often start around 15% higher than regional cities.
  • Combined procedures: Adding cataract surgery to a vitrectomy typically increases the total cost by 20-30%.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a high-volume specialist often provides better value than just seeking the lowest price. For example, Dr. Ahmet Satici has performed over 20,000 surgeries, offering professional expertise for approximately $6,000. Alternatively, JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Bahçelievler provide "simple" vitrectomy packages starting around $3,000. These lower-cost options still include VIP transfers and specialist consultations, ensuring safety without premium price tags.

It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life
I’d like to leave a positive review of the Dünyagöz clinic and Bookimed, the company that helped me find this clinic. First and foremost, I’d like to highlight the high standard of service at the Dünyagöz clinic. Upon arrival, I was promptly met and immediately provided with an interpreter. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the language barrier — both Russian and English are available here. The interpreter accompanies you at every stage: from the initial consultation right through to the operation itself. This is very important, as eye care requires a precise understanding of all your concerns and the doctor’s recommendations. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the wards. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with any queries. Another definite plus was the full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, so you don’t have to worry about practical matters and can focus entirely on your treatment and recovery. I would like to express my special thanks to Bookimed. Throughout the entire process, you are supported by a personal coordinator who helps organise your trip, answers questions and provides all the necessary details. My coordinator was Anastasia, and I am sincerely grateful to her for her support. She was available practically 24/7 and even helped with matters not directly related to the clinic. It was on her recommendation that I chose Dünyagöz. What’s more, Anastasia herself had previously had her vision corrected at the same clinic, so she was able to share her personal experience. Now we are both delighted with the result and can confidently recommend this clinic to others. If you’ve been thinking about vision correction for a while, there’s no need to be afraid or put off the decision. After the operation, you realise you should have done it much sooner. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life. I wish everyone good luck, good health and nothing but positive experiences with their new, clear vision!

My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range
My biggest worry before getting LASIK was the risk of side effects like long-term dry eyes or glare. I can honestly say my recovery has been very straightforward so far. I’ve had no dryness at all, and even better, I haven’t noticed any halos or glare in low light, which was a huge relief for me. My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range. Overall, the whole process was solid. Of course, everyone’s experience will vary, and when I was researching beforehand, I saw many people discussing side effects that I personally did not experience at all. I had the LASIK treatment rather than SMILE, so this review is based on my own LASIK experience. Make sure to do all your research beforehand. If your main concern is whether the clinic is good to get the procedure done, then in simple terms, yes, it is. Like any place, there are things outside of the actual surgery that could be improved, but I would recommend looking through reviews carefully and moving forward with what you personally feel comfortable and confident with.
The staff were good, the room provided was also great, and the surgery went very fast and smoothly with no issues at all. Everyone was kind and helpful throughout the experience. The staff who brought the food and checked in were especially nice. There was one individual in particular I’m not sure of his name, but he spoke English and was incredibly sweet, always checking in and asking if everything was okay. He definitely made the whole experience much better and more comfortable.
One area for improvement would be communication, as English seems to be limited mainly to the coordinator and doctor . If you need to ask other staff or reception for help or information, it can sometimes be a little difficult to navigate. I would recommend having a translation app available and making sure you have your in-hospital coordinator’s contact number handy, as following things up through reception or other staff is not easy . There was also a slight issue with payment, so I would recommend having a backup payment method or checking beforehand what to do if the card machine does not work, since payments are handled directly there. This is especially important if you are travelling from abroad, as I travelled from the UK.

I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process
Communication was great. I was picked up from the hotel, transfered to the hospital, and accompanied by Adam (translator) through the journey. He knew exactly the intake process and what they would want. He was well organized and very friendly. The consultant spoke English and was very calm, and professional. I had femto iLasik which was without complication. Pre-op my prescription was -7. Day 0 post op, I could still see but with blurry vision. Day 1 post op, my vision is now 20/20. But eyes feel gritty but hopefully will ease in a few days. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process. I would highly recommend Turkey for medical tourism. It's affordable and a beautiful clean city to visit as well. Stupendous experience.

The surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease
My biggest concern was the procedure itself and the potential side effects. Fortunately, the surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease. It has now been 15 days since my umbilical cord stem cell treatment. To be honest, I haven’t noticed any changes yet, which is to be expected at this early stage. There is still some pain when I touch the injection site. I’ve been sticking to the post-treatment restrictions most of the time, and the clinic itself was good but not entirely modern, which is why I’ve given it four stars. Overall, it was a good experience and now I just need to be patient.

Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief
What worried me most was the uncertainty and the long search for the causes of my condition. Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief. The doctor immediately explained the possible triggers, which helped me understand the situation. It’s only been 15 days, and I’m still in the early stages of recovery. The pain in my eyes has eased slightly, as has my sensitivity to light. My visual acuity remains unchanged for now, but I realise that this will take time. The whole clinic team worked very smoothly and professionally, which gave me a sense of calm.

I recommend bookimed
My husband and I traveled from New Zealand to both get eye lens replacement surgery. From the start we have had print and effient communication. With every question answered. We were picked up from the airport, taken to hotel, then the same day at our request taken to the hospital for our appointment. Two days later we were in having eye surgery again with pick ups and drop offs. We were met at the hospital entrance, by bookimed.com translators and hospital translators they were amazing every day, in every way. The doctors were provisional and onto it, explaining every detail, and answering all our questions. Our procedure went very well and we are very happy with the outcome and how amazing we can see, no longer with glasses or contacts. I recommend bookimed.com to everyone. Vikki

I highly recommend this clinic
My entire trip to Istanbul was well organised from the very start: the transfer from the airport to the clinic, the interpreter, and the competence of the staff and the doctor. I really appreciated that the doctor calmly and without any fuss explained what was going to be done and which procedure would be best for me. The interpreter was also very good; overall, the examination and operation went quickly (and painlessly). I highly recommend this clinic. For the money, you get good service and, above all, a high-quality operation. Thank you 🤩
The clinic is excellent – I highly recommend it. The staff take great care of their patients. The doctor is highly competent and provided a great deal of information about the treatment and rehabilitation. After a painless operation, my vision had already improved by the evening. A week has now passed and I am very satisfied; I’ve had no problems at all during this time, my vision is good and I’m happy. Thank you for everything))

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating
The staff at Bookimed from the initial off-set answered all my questions, queries promptly. I was nervous with feelings swaying about my treatment. Upon arrival in Turkey from the airport transfer onwards, I have got to say all doubts were a contrast as to what I witnessed and to the treatment I received. On the first day the hotel staff were welcoming by the way I stayed local to VMH University Hospital Istanbul Besyol, at a budget I chose the World Point Hotel 700 meters away (Ramada Hotel was even closer.) I'm not arguing with what I paid, hygiene, cleanliness, manners, availability of staff, room, I got and witnessed. The transfer to the Hospital l walked with my translator, who put all my nerves and questions I had to bed, I must say I felt alot better. On arrival I was astounded, the smell of freshness, clean, I had to ask the translator how many floors 9 was the reply, Big, busy different ethnicities different cultures, vast array of people from all parts of the world, I felt comfortable. The level of equipment, the Doctors, staff members would not go amiss in any Country. The treatment I received the interaction which you have with the Doctor was of great effect to me as the knowledge about my treatment gained was instrumental in what was to happen. Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of surgery abroad of any kind to get in touch with them, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. Thank you.

The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding
My Experience with Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul I recently had surgery in Turkey, and I must say, my coordinator Olya was an incredible professional. She was with me every step of the way, always available 24/7, a true angel! Thanks to her, I chose this hospital and Turkey instead of the Czech Republic. Olya’s support was crucial in my decision, and I’m forever grateful to her. Special thanks to our guide Said, who was always available, no matter the time of day or night. He helped resolve every issue between me and the clinic, providing a smooth experience throughout the process. The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding. From the initial consultation to the operation itself, everything went smoothly, quickly, and painlessly. He’s truly a high-level professional who’s there to treat patients rather than make money off them. I deeply appreciate all of his care and expertise. A week has passed since the surgery, and I feel good, though my vision hasn’t fully returned yet. However, this is normal, and I’m confident that it will improve over time. I can confidently recommend Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul. Cons: The main downside of my experience was with the hospital’s billing department. They requested payment in cash, but we were not informed about this before traveling to Turkey. If you want to pay by card, they charge a 20% commission, which is an unreasonably high fee. I’d also like to mention someone named Timur (I don’t remember his last name). In front of patients, he was speaking in Russian with a female colleague, assuming we didn’t understand the language. They said something like, “People are so stupid; it’s hard to work with such dumb people.” This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in the presence of patients. Such conversations seriously undermine the clinic’s reputation and are inappropriate in a professional healthcare setting. Therefore, I strongly advise anyone planning a visit to clarify all financial and organizational details
About Bookimed service
My experience with Bookimed was incredibly positive. From the moment I reached out, my coordinator Olya provided exceptional support, always available and guiding me through every step. The process of selecting the clinic and arranging everything was smooth and well-organized, thanks to her. Bookimed’s team made me feel confident in my decision, and their constant communication gave me peace of mind throughout the treatment journey. I highly recommend their services for anyone seeking medical care abroad.

FAQ about Vitrectomy in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate of vitrectomy surgery in Turkey?

Vitrectomy success rates in Turkey typically range from 85% to 95% for common conditions like retinal detachment and macular hole repair. Outcomes depend on surgical timing and underlying pathology, with anatomical reattachment rates reaching nearly 100% when multiple procedures are considered by specialized vitreoretinal surgeons.

  • Retinal detachment: Primary success rates for physical reattachment range between 85% and 90%.
  • Macular hole: Modern surgical techniques in Turkey achieve approximately 95% closure success rates.
  • Diabetic retinopathy: Anatomical success reaches 95%, though visual improvement typically ranges from 62% to 70%.
  • Surgeon experience: Top specialists like Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satici have performed over 20,000 eye surgeries.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that the most successful outcomes correlate with surgeon specialization rather than general clinic volume. For example, Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer at Derda Saglik Hizmetleri is specifically fellowship-trained at the University of Kansas in vitreoretinal surgery. Choosing a specialist who focuses exclusively on the retina, rather than a general ophthalmologist, significantly improves functional vision recovery markers.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report life-changing results with full vision recovery after six months, particularly when treated at JCI-accredited facilities. However, some emphasize the importance of choosing high-volume centers to avoid risks of post-operative infection or the need for repeat procedures.

Is it safe to fly back home after a vitrectomy in Turkey?

Safe air travel after a vitrectomy in Turkey depends entirely on the tamponade material used during surgery. Patients receiving a gas bubble (SF6 or C3F8) must avoid flying until the gas is fully absorbed to prevent permanent vision loss from cabin pressure changes.

  • Gas (SF6) timeline: Wait at least 2 weeks before flying for complete safety and absorption.
  • Gas (C3F8) timeline: Expect a 4 to 6-week recovery period before receiving flight clearance.
  • Silicone oil advantage: Patients often fly within 24–48 hours because oil does not expand mid-flight.
  • Mandatory follow-up: Obtain written medical clearance from your Turkish surgeon before any air travel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many local clinics suggest shorter stays, our data shows a clear advantage in booking packages like those at Medipol Bahçelievler Hospital which include multi-night hotel stays. Patients who plan for a 14-day minimum stay in Istanbul avoid the significant risk of permanent retinal damage caused by premature altitude exposure during the ascent phase of a flight.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that healing timelines in Turkey are identical to domestic standards because eye physiology remains the same everywhere. Most travelers recommend requesting aisle seats to maintain proper head positioning during the journey home.

How long is the recovery period after vitrectomy?

Initial recovery after vitrectomy requires 1 to 2 weeks of strict face-down positioning to stabilize the retina. Most patients regain functional vision within 2 to 6 weeks, though full visual clarity and permanent stabilization typically take 3 to 6 months depending on the underlying condition.

  • Hospital stay: Most patients return to their hotel after a 1-day hospital observation period.
  • Posturing requirements: Face-down positioning for 16–22 hours daily is vital during the first 14 days.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting and air travel for 2–8 weeks while gas bubbles dissipate.
  • Vision milestones: Expect foggy vision initially, with significant improvement occurring as gas or oil stabilizes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a surgeon with high procedural volume is a major safety signal in Turkey. For example, Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed over 25,000 eye surgeries, which correlates with lower complication rates. Patients often overlook that while surgical fees are lower, specialized face-down recovery equipment is essential for success and should be arranged before arrival.

Patient Consensus: Patients often describe early vision as looking through heavy fog or Vaseline. While 90% recover well within a month, those with oil-filled eyes should expect a slower 6-month timeline and a second minor procedure for oil removal.

What do medical packages in Turkey typically include?

Medical packages in Turkey typically include the surgical procedure, specialized consultations, and comprehensive pre-operative diagnostics. Most bundles for procedures like vitrectomy also cover 1–3 days of hospitalization, 5-star hotel accommodations, and VIP airport-to-clinic transfers to ensure a seamless recovery process.

  • Clinical services: Includes specialized surgeon fees, anesthesia, and 1–3 required post-operative clinic visits.
  • Diagnostic testing: Covers essential blood work, electrocardiograms (ECG), chest X-rays, and fundoscopic eye examinations.
  • Logistics support: Provides VIP transfers between the airport, hotel, and clinic with multilingual assistance.
  • Luxury accommodation: Usually features 3–5 nights in 4-star or 5-star hotels for international patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume surgeons in Turkey often offer better-integrated packages. For example, Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed over 25,000 surgeries and includes 5-star stays in his standard pricing. In contrast, academic-focused clinics might prioritize extensive pre-op testing over hotel inclusions, so always verify if accommodation is bundled.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the professional care and seamless coordination from reception through surgery. Many recommend getting a written breakdown specifically confirming if advanced scans or revision cases are covered.

This specific micro-incision approach typically reduces recovery time compared to standard 23-gauge methods. When comparing packages, prioritize those including 3–5 nights of 5-star accommodation. This allows for the essential day-1 and week-1 follow-up exams required for visual stabilization.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently emphasize the importance of choosing verified private hospitals in Istanbul over cheaper coastal clinics to ensure rigorous infection protocols. Most express high satisfaction when packages bundle VIP transfers, as traveling post-surgery with protective eye shields requires professional coordination.
