How Much Does Retinopathy of prematurity surgery (ROP surgery) Cost in Turkey?

Retinopathy of prematurity surgery (ROP surgery) in Turkey typically costs from $3,500 to $6,500. The final price depends on the disease stage, specific surgical technique, and the neonatal specialist’s experience. Patients save approximately 88% compared to the US, where the average cost is $40,000. Standard packages in Istanbul often include preoperative diagnostics, medications, luxury accommodation, and VIP transfers.

  • Laser photocoagulation: Generally the most affordable intervention, costing between 15% and 20% of advanced surgery.
  • Anti-VEGF injections: Typically priced per eye and often used as a primary or supplemental treatment.
  • Vitreoretinal surgery: Required for stages 4 or 5 and carries a premium for specialized equipment.
  • Scleral buckling: A structural procedure for severe cases that falls between laser and vitrectomy costs.
  • Neonatal medical hub: Prices in Istanbul clinics often run 15% higher than in smaller regional cities.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialist with dedicated ROP fellowships offers the best value for complex cases. For instance, Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed over 900 ROP procedures and holds a Kansas University fellowship. His clinic provides inclusive packages for approximately $6,000. These bundles cover 10 nights in a 4-star hotel and VIP transfers. This setup is ideal for international families requiring stability during the infant's recovery.

It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

The recovery so far is better than expected
If you're considering this procedure, my main advice is to bring a physical card for payment. I used Apple Pay, which had a low transaction limit and forced me to make about 20 separate payments to cover the cost. Medically, everything was straightforward. I had lens replacement in both eyes on the same day, and the recovery so far is better than expected. my doctor, who took the time to explain which technique suited my eyes and was very honest about the realistic vision outcome I could anticipate. I must also say a huge thank you to the night nurse ( mirve ) I think was her name she was outstanding and took good care of me . It was reassuring that there were no additional expenses. The one thing to note is that there was little contact from the clinic after I left, but the core service was solid.
I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment from all staff especially mirve who looked after me through the night she came every hour to do my drops until I asked her to come at 6.00 in morning she gave me an extension number incase I needed anything before six , which I did at 5.00am she immediately came to my room and sorted my issue the operation went perfect and after only two days I can see better than I have in the last 18 years 👌👍👌 thank you everyone

Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life
I’d like to leave a positive review of the Dünyagöz clinic and Bookimed, the company that helped me find this clinic. First and foremost, I’d like to highlight the high standard of service at the Dünyagöz clinic. Upon arrival, I was promptly met and immediately provided with an interpreter. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the language barrier — both Russian and English are available here. The interpreter accompanies you at every stage: from the initial consultation right through to the operation itself. This is very important, as eye care requires a precise understanding of all your concerns and the doctor’s recommendations. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the wards. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with any queries. Another definite plus was the full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, so you don’t have to worry about practical matters and can focus entirely on your treatment and recovery. I would like to express my special thanks to Bookimed. Throughout the entire process, you are supported by a personal coordinator who helps organise your trip, answers questions and provides all the necessary details. My coordinator was Anastasia, and I am sincerely grateful to her for her support. She was available practically 24/7 and even helped with matters not directly related to the clinic. It was on her recommendation that I chose Dünyagöz. What’s more, Anastasia herself had previously had her vision corrected at the same clinic, so she was able to share her personal experience. Now we are both delighted with the result and can confidently recommend this clinic to others. If you’ve been thinking about vision correction for a while, there’s no need to be afraid or put off the decision. After the operation, you realise you should have done it much sooner. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life. I wish everyone good luck, good health and nothing but positive experiences with their new, clear vision!

I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process
Communication was great. I was picked up from the hotel, transfered to the hospital, and accompanied by Adam (translator) through the journey. He knew exactly the intake process and what they would want. He was well organized and very friendly. The consultant spoke English and was very calm, and professional. I had femto iLasik which was without complication. Pre-op my prescription was -7. Day 0 post op, I could still see but with blurry vision. Day 1 post op, my vision is now 20/20. But eyes feel gritty but hopefully will ease in a few days. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process. I would highly recommend Turkey for medical tourism. It's affordable and a beautiful clean city to visit as well. Stupendous experience.

What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option
What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option. He performed the surgery personally on both of my eyes the same day. My recovery is going about as expected, and the clinic provided a clear aftercare guide. Just be prepared for the other costs. Of course, I had to pay for my flight, a two-week hotel stay, and also a required $150 medical insurance policy on top of the clinic's price.

My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range
My biggest worry before getting LASIK was the risk of side effects like long-term dry eyes or glare. I can honestly say my recovery has been very straightforward so far. I’ve had no dryness at all, and even better, I haven’t noticed any halos or glare in low light, which was a huge relief for me. My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range. Overall, the whole process was solid. Of course, everyone’s experience will vary, and when I was researching beforehand, I saw many people discussing side effects that I personally did not experience at all. I had the LASIK treatment rather than SMILE, so this review is based on my own LASIK experience. Make sure to do all your research beforehand. If your main concern is whether the clinic is good to get the procedure done, then in simple terms, yes, it is. Like any place, there are things outside of the actual surgery that could be improved, but I would recommend looking through reviews carefully and moving forward with what you personally feel comfortable and confident with.
The staff were good, the room provided was also great, and the surgery went very fast and smoothly with no issues at all. Everyone was kind and helpful throughout the experience. The staff who brought the food and checked in were especially nice. There was one individual in particular I’m not sure of his name, but he spoke English and was incredibly sweet, always checking in and asking if everything was okay. He definitely made the whole experience much better and more comfortable.
One area for improvement would be communication, as English seems to be limited mainly to the coordinator and doctor . If you need to ask other staff or reception for help or information, it can sometimes be a little difficult to navigate. I would recommend having a translation app available and making sure you have your in-hospital coordinator’s contact number handy, as following things up through reception or other staff is not easy . There was also a slight issue with payment, so I would recommend having a backup payment method or checking beforehand what to do if the card machine does not work, since payments are handled directly there. This is especially important if you are travelling from abroad, as I travelled from the UK.

I recommend bookimed
My husband and I traveled from New Zealand to both get eye lens replacement surgery. From the start we have had print and effient communication. With every question answered. We were picked up from the airport, taken to hotel, then the same day at our request taken to the hospital for our appointment. Two days later we were in having eye surgery again with pick ups and drop offs. We were met at the hospital entrance, by bookimed.com translators and hospital translators they were amazing every day, in every way. The doctors were provisional and onto it, explaining every detail, and answering all our questions. Our procedure went very well and we are very happy with the outcome and how amazing we can see, no longer with glasses or contacts. I recommend bookimed.com to everyone. Vikki

The surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease
My biggest concern was the procedure itself and the potential side effects. Fortunately, the surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease. It has now been 15 days since my umbilical cord stem cell treatment. To be honest, I haven’t noticed any changes yet, which is to be expected at this early stage. There is still some pain when I touch the injection site. I’ve been sticking to the post-treatment restrictions most of the time, and the clinic itself was good but not entirely modern, which is why I’ve given it four stars. Overall, it was a good experience and now I just need to be patient.

Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief
What worried me most was the uncertainty and the long search for the causes of my condition. Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief. The doctor immediately explained the possible triggers, which helped me understand the situation. It’s only been 15 days, and I’m still in the early stages of recovery. The pain in my eyes has eased slightly, as has my sensitivity to light. My visual acuity remains unchanged for now, but I realise that this will take time. The whole clinic team worked very smoothly and professionally, which gave me a sense of calm.

I highly recommend this clinic
My entire trip to Istanbul was well organised from the very start: the transfer from the airport to the clinic, the interpreter, and the competence of the staff and the doctor. I really appreciated that the doctor calmly and without any fuss explained what was going to be done and which procedure would be best for me. The interpreter was also very good; overall, the examination and operation went quickly (and painlessly). I highly recommend this clinic. For the money, you get good service and, above all, a high-quality operation. Thank you 🤩
The clinic is excellent – I highly recommend it. The staff take great care of their patients. The doctor is highly competent and provided a great deal of information about the treatment and rehabilitation. After a painless operation, my vision had already improved by the evening. A week has now passed and I am very satisfied; I’ve had no problems at all during this time, my vision is good and I’m happy. Thank you for everything))

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

FAQ about Retinopathy of prematurity surgery (ROP surgery) in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the success rates for ROP surgery in Turkey?

Success rates for ROP surgery in Turkey range from 85% to 95% for preventing blindness, depending on the disease stage. High-precision laser photocoagulation achieve a 94.6% complete recovery rate, while advanced vitreoretinal surgery maintains 100% anatomical success for lens-sparing procedures in specialized Istanbul centers.

  • Laser success: Complete recovery reached 94.6% in a study of 224 Turkish pediatric patients.
  • Anti-VEGF outcomes: Injections show an 85.7% success rate specifically for aggressive ROP cases.
  • Vitreoretinal surgery: Advanced interventions achieve 85.7% recovery with a single surgery in infants.
  • Optimal prognosis: Success reaches 99% when ROP regresses naturally from zone 2 to 3.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many general clinics offer eye care, the highest success rates come from surgeons with specific ROP fellowships. Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer and Dr. Ugur Yayla both completed dedicated fellowships in retinopathy of prematurity or vitreoretinal surgery. Choosing a specialist who focuses solely on pediatric retinal cases often mirrors the 100% anatomical success seen in top-tier Istanbul facilities.

Patient Consensus: Families emphasize that screening within 72 hours of NICU admission is the most critical factor for success. Most consider the outcome a total victory when no retinal detachment occurs for 2 years post-operation.

Which hospitals in Turkey are recommended for ROP treatment?

Recommended hospitals for ROP treatment in Turkey include specialized centers in Istanbul and Ankara like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital, Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer clinic, and Medipol University Hospital. These facilities offer advanced laser photocoagulation and vitreo-retinal surgery performed by surgeons with international fellowships.

  • Specialized eye networks: Dunyagoz Eye Hospital serves 62,000+ patients annually with TOD-accredited specialists.
  • Advanced surgical expertise: Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer has performed 25,000+ surgeries, including complex Stage 4-5 cases.
  • Fellowship-trained doctors: Dr. Ugur Yayla at Medipol University holds a dedicated ROP fellowship.
  • Comprehensive ROP screening: Acibadem Healthcare Group and VM Medical Park provide routine neonatal retinal monitoring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While private clinics like Dunyagoz offer high-end hospitality, Bookimed data shows that ROP specialists often maintain dual roles at university hospitals. Choosing a surgeon like Dr. M. Derda Ozer, who holds an ICO-STAAR fellowship from the University of Kansas, ensures your child receives US-standard protocols within a more accessible Turkish private facility.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize that checking for international fellowships in the UK or US is vital for ROP expertise. They often recommend planning a long-term follow-up schedule as monitoring must continue until 60 weeks postmenstrual age.

Who are some of the top ROP specialists in Turkey?

Top specialists for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in Turkey include Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer, Professor Ahmet Satici, and Dr. Ugur Yayla. These experts practice in Istanbul at specialized facilities like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital and Medipol University, performing thousands of complex pediatric retinal surgeries annually.

  • Muhammet Derda Ozer: Performed 25,000 procedures and holds a Vitreo-Retina Fellowship from University of Kansas.
  • Ahmet Satici: Features 33 years of experience with over 20,000 surgeries performed throughout his career.
  • Ugur Yayla: Completed a dedicated Retinopathy of Prematurity Fellowship at Zekai Tahir Burak hospital.
  • Yasar Dag: Specializes in vitrectomy and pediatric ROP at VM Medical Park Florya Hospital.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that surgical volume is a key quality indicator for ROP in Istanbul. While many clinics offer general ophthalmology, specialists like Dr. Ozer handle approximately 2,000 cases annually. This high frequency often correlates with the availability of advanced neonatal imaging and specialized pediatric vitrectomy equipment.

Patient Consensus: Parents recommend prioritizing university-affiliated centers for complex Stage 4 or 5 cases. Most advise carrying full NICU records and seeking multiple remote opinions before traveling for surgical intervention.

What are the ROP screening criteria in Turkey?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening in Turkey follows 2021 updated national guidelines targeting infants born under 34 weeks gestation or weighing less than 1,700g. Specialized ophthalmologists perform bedside examinations in JCI-accredited neonatal intensive care units to prevent vision loss through early detection and intervention.

  • Weight threshold: Infants weighing 1,700g or less require mandatory screening for retinal development.
  • Gestational age: All babies born before 34 weeks must undergo initial eye examinations.
  • High-risk cases: Infants over 1,700g with unstable clinical courses or cardiopulmonary support needs.
  • First exam: Timing varies between 30 postmenstrual weeks to 4 weeks after birth.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While national guidelines set the floor, top Istanbul clinics like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital manage over 60,000 patients annually using advanced digital retinal imaging. Choosing a facility where surgeons like Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer hold international fellowships ensures access to Stage 4 and 5 surgical interventions if screening identifies advanced disease.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize tracking oxygen exposure durations closely as a primary screening trigger. Many advise securing written documentation of retinal findings and scheduling follow-up exams before hospital discharge to ensure continuity.

What are the common risks or complications associated with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) surgery in Turkey?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) surgery in Turkey carries risks such as cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. These risks match global clinical standards. Fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialists manage complications using laser therapy, intravitreal injections, and vitrectomy. Experienced surgeons in Istanbul maintain high success rates while monitoring for intraoperative apnea or bradycardia.

  • Structural eye issues: Potential iris damage, lens injury, or posterior synechia during laser therapy.
  • Secondary conditions: Successful treatment may still lead to glaucoma or late-stage cataracts.
  • Retinal progression: Stage 4 or 5 cases may still face retinal detachment.
  • Refractive development: Most treated infants require long-term monitoring for myopia and astigmatism.
  • Systemic stability: Premature infants face risks of apnea or slow heart rate during surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Surgeon volume is the strongest indicator of safety. Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer at Derda Saglik Hizmetleri has performed 900+ ROP procedures. This is significantly higher than most general ophthalmologists. Choosing high-volume specialists in Istanbul helps ensure precise laser application and fewer repeat interventions.

Patient Consensus: Retinal detachment remains the leading concern for parents in Turkey. Families value early intervention to prevent scarring. They also mention that long-term specialist monitoring is essential for visual development.

When is the necessary timing for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening and surgery in Turkey?

Turkish guidelines require the first ROP screening at 4 weeks postnatal or the 31st postmenstrual week. For infants born before 25 weeks gestation, screening starts at 6 weeks. Urgent surgery protocols mandate treatment within 24–48 hours for Type 1 ROP to prevent vision loss.

  • Screening window: Examination starts 4 weeks after birth or 31 weeks postmenstrual age.
  • Extremely premature: Babies born under 25 weeks start screening at 6 weeks postnatal.
  • Weight criteria: Guidelines apply to infants weighing 2,100g or less at birth.
  • Surgical urgency: Treatment for aggressive ROP typically occurs within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Advanced stages: Stage 4 or 5 ROP requires complex vitreoretinal surgery called vitrectomy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While screening is the priority, severe cases require specialists with high procedure volumes. Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer at Derda Saglik Hizmetleri has performed 900+ ROP procedures. This experience is vital when treating fragile, premature infants in Stages 4 or 5.

Patient Consensus: Parents in Turkey emphasise that screening is time-sensitive and should never be delayed. You should arrange travel around the baby’s corrected gestational age window. This ensures the first exam occurs on schedule.

What treatment methods are available for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in Turkey?

Turkey provides retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treatments, including laser photocoagulation, anti-VEGF injections, and vitreoretinal surgery. Specialist centres in Istanbul use JCI-accredited facilities and international protocols to prevent vision loss. Expert surgeons often hold fellowships from leading American institutions and have performed over 900+ ROP-specific procedures.

  • Laser photocoagulation: Standard therapy using argon lasers to treat non-vascularised retina areas.
  • Anti-VEGF injections: Medication injections that shrink abnormal blood vessels in severe ROP cases.
  • Vitreoretinal surgery: Vitrectomy for stages 4–5 to address partial or full retinal detachment.
  • Cryotherapy: Cold treatment used to freeze and destroy peripheral vessels when lasers are unsuitable.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many clinics offer basic eye care. However, you should choose specialists with dedicated ROP fellowships for later stages. Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer at his Istanbul clinic completed a specific vitreo-retinal fellowship at the University of Kansas. This niche training is vital for the precision required in stage 4 or 5 cases.

Why would Australian patients consider Turkey for neonatal retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treatment?

Australian parents choose Turkey for neonatal retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treatment. They gain access to vitreoretinal specialists and neonatal technology. High-volume centres in Istanbul offer time-critical interventions like laser therapy and vitrectomy. These services often cost 88% less than private care in Australia.

  • Specialised expertise: Surgeons such as Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed 25,000+ procedures.
  • Modern techniques: Clinics provide Anti-VEGF injections and pars plana vitrectomy for complex Stage 5 cases.
  • Accredited facilities: Leading centres like Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer clinic hold JCI accreditation.
  • Time-critical access: Rapid scheduling helps families avoid wait times for this vision-saving neonatal surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many surgeons perform retina work, Turkish specialists often complete ROP-specific fellowships. For example, Dr Ugur Yayla completed a tenure at Zekai Tahir Burak. This niche training is vital for treating fragile newborns safely. Families should look for these neonatal credentials to confirm high surgical standards.

Patient Consensus: Australian families value the speed of access and bundled packages including hotel stays. They appreciate the clear coordination between neonatal teams and ophthalmologists for these time-sensitive infant cases.

Do Turkish hospitals providing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) care offer remote monitoring or screening?

Turkish eye hospitals use telemedical screening to monitor retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in neonatal units. Specialists perform remote diagnoses using digital fundus imaging. This allows local intensive care teams to capture retinal images for expert review. Ophthalmic surgeons at JCI-accredited hubs like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital then review these images.

  • Technological integration: Hospitals use remote digital fundus imaging for rapid neonatal retinal assessment.
  • Specialist access: Remote tools connect local neonatal units with surgeons like Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer.
  • Clinical benchmarks: High-risk cases still require bedside examinations by specialists with ROP fellowship training.
  • International coordination: Specialists like Prof. Ali Riza Cenk Celebi participate in Asia-Pacific teleophthalmology networks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Remote screening is common for initial checks. However, surgery for advanced stages 4 or 5 requires an in-person visit. Experienced surgeons in Istanbul, such as Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer, have performed 900+ ROP procedures. Their surgical packages typically include 10 days of post-operative monitoring to check stability before travel.

Patient Consensus: Families find that initial coordination happens remotely. However, retinal exams and emergency follow-ups in Turkey require a physical presence. Confirming a written screening schedule with the Turkish hospital helps coordinate care with Australian specialists upon return.
