Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün: more details about the clinic

Turkey, Eskisehir

Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün runs a specialized eye surgery practice in İzmir's Alsancak district, Turkey. The clinic operates within Private Kaşkaloğlu Eye Hospital. It focuses on advanced retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery. A team of four physicians treats complex posterior segment cases and cataract complications.

Key Achievements and Statistics

Lead specialist Dr. Tansu Erakgün has completed over 15,000 surgical interventions throughout his career. He holds Associate Professor and Professor titles, reflecting decades of academic and clinical work. The practice is known for surgical innovation, including the design of custom instruments.

The clinic maintains active memberships in major professional organizations:

  • American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO)
  • European Vitreoretinal Society (EVRS)
  • Turkish Ophthalmology Association (TOD)

Dr. Erakgün has served as faculty for the EVRS Training School in Ankara. He has also presented surgical findings at international meetings, including at Tbilisi State Medical University.

Retina and Vitreoretinal Surgery

The clinic treats retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and macular holes. For rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, the team uses suprachoroidal viscopexy (SCVEXY) with cryotherapy. This approach often avoids the need for gas or silicone oil tamponades.

Specific procedures and success rates include:

  • Retinal detachment surgery: 85–90% success rate with a single intervention.
  • Vitrectomy: Used for massive submacular hemorrhages and severe diabetic cases.
  • Tenon patch graft: A specialized technique for severe tractional diabetic retinopathy with tears.
  • Cryotherapy: Stabilizes vision in patients with stage 1–3 Coats' Disease.

Vitreoretinal procedures take 30 minutes to two hours, depending on complexity. Most patients return to normal activities within one to two weeks.

Cataract and Glaucoma Care

Surgeons perform cataract surgery using the phacoemulsification (phaco) method. Ultrasound waves break up the lens through a small 2 mm incision. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and includes placing an artificial intraocular lens.

The practice also manages Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in newborns. The team treats all stages, including plus and proliferative phases. Treatment options include laser therapy, injections, and surgical removal of abnormal vessels.

Surgical Technologies and Diagnostics

The clinic uses surgical instruments designed by Dr. Erakgün for vitrectomy. These include the Erakgun Spatula Knife and the Erakgun Snare, both recognized in medical literature. A nitinol flex loop assists endolaser photocoagulation in advanced diabetic cases.

Diagnostic tools available at the facility include:

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
  • Corneal topography
  • Ultrasound of the eye
  • Neuro-ophthalmic examination
  • Slit lamp examination

These tools allow detailed evaluation before surgery, so the team can plan anesthesia and medication carefully.

International Patient Services

The clinic serves patients who travel to İzmir for specialized retina treatments. Select specialists share their surgical experience through international training programs. Pre-operative preparation includes a full review of chronic and systemic diseases to ensure patient safety.

Tansu hocam was the biggest chance of my life. A retinal tear is not well known by the public, but it’s a bypass-like condition of the eye, and many people lose the ability to see… Of course, 13 years ago I was very lucky too—though, of course, I made the mistake at first as well. On September 9, because it was close to my home, we went there first. We met the doctor, and he was the one who was 45 minutes… without anesthesia they burned the tears, but they burned only the useless spots again and again. Even my mother offered her home to the doctor. (I remember the doctor’s name like it’s yesterday, but I won’t give it.) They said they were going to a conference, and with a suitcase in hand they left the students, and I experienced the greatest pain of my life. Then calls went out everywhere, and my vision dropped to 20%… And then one phone call (Jale Dinçer, my routine eye doctor) reached him: “Please come immediately, Tansu hocam. My mother says he’s very young.” My mother asked about the money, because we heard terrifying amounts. “Come right away, it’s not an issue,” the doctor said—and I came out with vision of 80%. The surgery was a huge success. Such a beautiful heart—on Saturday, Tansu hocam gathered his team only for his patients. And I moved to Ankara; at Maya Göz Merkezi, I went for a routine checkup because of my retinal tear. The minister professor said directly, “Did Tansu hocam do your surgery?” In my eye there is a silicone clamp—no one could have done this. He said my classmate, who is now a retinal doctor, knows—“Don’t worry, nothing will happen anymore.” I felt immense gratitude toward Tansu hocam, and that day I also experienced an incredible pride and admiration for him too 🙏🙏🙏🙏 Of course, retinal surgery is difficult; it takes 4 or 5 years for cataract-like formation—but instead of operating again and again, Tansu hocam waited 13 years. Tansu hocam is not only a genius in his field, but also a person with a huge heart who is not tied to dishonest financial interests—someone you can actually recognize as the honest one. And with the surgery I had this week, he brought my situation down to zero; and if I’m writing here for so many hours, it’s because I’m sure that the person who gave me my world at 46 will also bring light to you. Please don’t live through as much pain as I did—don’t crash your life around financially to the sides… I’m writing so you can be as lucky as I was, and this memory. And once again, here I want to say: you are the biggest chance of my life. I hope you will be as lucky as I was in your life too, Hocam. I know there’s no price for your effort— I know 🙏🙏🙏🙏

We visited two doctors; after paying twice, we had the eyeglass lenses changed. Unfortunately, according to the prescriptions the doctors provided, we couldn’t resolve our mother’s blurred-vision problem. Our doctor, Mr. Tansu, in just a single examination, identified and solved the issue in the quickest way with the right diagnosis and treatment. We are grateful 🙏🙏🙏

I come to my doctor, Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün, for injection therapy. Doctors like this should always exist. During the treatment process, my professor’s hand was so light that I didn’t feel anything during the procedure. I’m so glad you’re here, professor 🤲

For the third time, he saved my eye from a retinal detachment surgery—again. He restored my eye without pain, without suffering. I’m grateful. When no one else would dare to perform the surgery, he did it without hesitation, smoothly, and without any problems. My teacher, my prayers—go with confidence. Bless your hands, and also you’re a wonderful person. Live on, teacher. Thank you so, so much, because I was very afraid. May Allah be pleased with you.

We would like to thank our respected Professor Tansu Erakgün, whom we believe diligently and tirelessly did her best for three years during our mother Dilfiraz Özdemir’s diabetes-related eye bleeding process. We would like to thank her for the close attention and care she showed. Our country needs to make the necessary effort to support and increase such valuable professors. As for her assistant, Ms. Şennur, she has put in very valuable work with her friendly demeanor in coordination. We traveled to and from Torbalı with our professor. She is a very graceful person who understands when the patient is unwell and does not hesitate to provide every kind of necessary convenience. You can go to someone as valuable as this without thinking twice. (It is a real share; for those who want, you can reach her.)

Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgun was my grandmother’s doctor. My father was very satisfied, and of course I also chose Hocа Tansu. First of all, I trust him a lot. He is very meticulous, kind, and friendly—his caring and detail-oriented approach is important to me. I went into surgery on 30.09.2025 at 13:30. Even at that moment, I called out to Tansu; he said, “I’m here, I’ve started—don’t worry.” The cataract surgery was performed and the lens was fitted. Mr. Tansu, I’m extremely, very pleased. May Allah bless him—now I can see again. Thank you so much. May God protect doctors like you, God willing. 🙏 Berat can

Our ophthalmologist, Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün, whom we visited due to my mother’s yellow spot disease (macular degeneration), is a smiling, attentive, well-equipped doctor who inspires confidence. With both her professional knowledge and her human approach, she makes her one of the most recommended physicians in her field.

I had been diagnosed with “sarı nokta” (macular degeneration) at another hospital in İzmir, and I was told I had less than five years to lose my eyesight. So, for a second opinion, I made an appointment at your hospital with Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün for 16/09/2025. After the examinations and check-up he did, my esteemed doctor told me exactly: “There’s nothing wrong with you; both of your eyes are perfectly fine.” From the darkness of a wrong diagnosis that lasted for a year, I suddenly came out—like the sun had risen... I felt reborn... My endless thanks to Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün and Kaşkaloğlu Hospital. I’m so glad you’re there... Servet Koyuncu

On April 11, 2025, I was diagnosed with a retinal detachment. The same day, Mr. Tansu performed the surgery, and the result was successful. I am grateful to him—may God bless him for it.
