Univ. Prof. Dr. Gerhard Prager is a renowned Austrian general and visceral surgeon, internationally recognized for his expertise in bariatric (obesity) and metabolic surgery, as well as complex gastrointestinal and abdominal procedures. With more than 25 years of experience in surgery and academic medicine, he is one of Europe’s leading authorities in the surgical treatment of obesity and metabolic disorders.

He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating in the 1990s, and began his surgical training at the Medical University of Vienna, where he developed an early interest in minimally invasive and laparoscopic techniques. His commitment to improving the health and quality of life of patients with obesity and gastrointestinal diseases has guided his entire professional path.

     1990s – Completed medical studies and residency in general and visceral surgery at Vienna General Hospital (AKH).

     2000s – Specialized in bariatric and metabolic surgery, performing procedures such as gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional bariatric operations.

     2010s – Appointed Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna and became Head of the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Program at the Department of General Surgery.

     Today – Serves as senior consultant at Wiener Privatklinik, performing advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures for obesity, reflux disease, hernias, and gastrointestinal cancers.

Prof. Prager’s scientific work has focused on metabolic regulation, hormonal mechanisms in obesity, and long-term outcomes of bariatric surgery. He has published extensively in leading medical journals and has been a keynote speaker at numerous international conferences.
