Prof. Paik Nam-sun is a surgical oncologist who pioneered breast cancer treatment. The International Biographical Centre in Cambridge ranked him among the world’s top 100 surgeons for gastric and breast cancer. He currently directs the Cancer Center for Women at Ewha Womans University Medical Center.
Specialization and Surgical Innovation
Prof. Paik treats breast cancer, thyroid cancer, and stomach cancer. In 1986, he was the first to perform breast-conserving surgery in South Korea. This technique preserves the breast tissue while removing the tumor. He also developed a proprietary stomach cancer surgery in 1991. This method reduces the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease after the procedure.
Achievements and Leadership
The International Biographical Centre in Cambridge recognized his surgical expertise in 2006. He was named one of the 100 best gastric and breast cancer surgeons. Prof. Paik has held senior leadership roles across major Korean institutions. He investigates molecular genetics to improve breast cancer diagnosis and patient quality of life.
