Ottavio Alfieri

Doctor Ottavio Alfieri is an award-winning heart surgeon with over 15 years of practical experience in cardiac surgery. Has developed a method of mitral valve repair which is the most applicable method of percutaneous correction of mitral regurgitation. Has performed more than 15,000 cardiac procedures.

• Since 2018 — Senior Consultant at the Cardiac Surgery Unit of the San Raffaele Hospital.
• 1996-2017 — Director of the Cardiac Surgery Unit of the San Raffaele Hospital
• 1986-1996 — Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department of the Civil Hospitals of Brescia
• 1980-1986 — Adult cardiac surgeon in St. Antonius Hospital in Neuwegei (Netherlands). 

Education

• 1971 — Resident in Cardiac Surgery at Bergamo Hospital
• 1973-1974 — Fellow in Cardiovascular Surgery at Children's Hospital of Buffalo (USA)
• 1977 — Research fellow in Cardiovascular Surgery at University of Alabama, Birmingham (USA).

Teaching activity

• Professor and Chairman of Cardiac Surgery at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele
• 1982-1986 — Visiting Professor at the University of Gdansk (Poland).

Scientific activity

Author of over 600 peer-reviewed articles and several books devoted to cardiac surgery.

Developed the "Alfieri Mitral Repair" technique — which is the most used today to correct the mitral insufficiency. Dr. Ottavio Alfieri holds numerous patents regarding devices used in the treatment of heart valve diseases.

• 2011 — The 'Ambrogino d'Oro ' (the Golden Litle Ambrose) Award, the highest Milanese honor
• 2018 — The gold medal from the European Cardiology Society for scientific contributions in the cardiology field.
