Submit a request to know how much lipo costs.

Liposuction, also referred to as “lipo” is a cosmetic surgery to remove fat deposits. It may be performed to correct the particular area or areas — belly, thighs, hips, arms, etc.

More than 1,5 million liposuction procedures are carried out annually. Such popularity is explained by:

  • fast result without efforts
  • affordable lipo cost that is offered in some countries.

Remember that liposuction is not a cure for obesity. The average weight loss after the surgery composes only 1 to 5 pounds that are 0.5 to 2 kilos. However, the procedure can dramatically improve your appearance by helping you get rid of some stubborn fat pockets. Moreover, to preserve the results, you will have to analyze your eating habits, track your calories, and think of some weekly workouts.

5 fast facts about liposuction

Liposuction is not performed for obese people. It is a cosmetic surgery to remove the local fat accumulation. You are a perfect candidate for liposuction if your body mass index (BMI) is lower than 35.

  1. It takes several weeks to see a satisfying result. Before you observe the final result, it is necessary to wear compression underwear or elastic bandages.
  2. Liposuction is performed for cosmetic purposes and is rarely covered by insurance in almost all countries, including the USA and the UK. Get ready to pay the full liposuction surgery cost.
  3. Liposuction results are permanent in case you keep healthy eating habits and do physical exercises.
  4. Liposuction is effective for both men and women. The men’s liposuction cost is the same as for women.
  5. After the lipo operation, abdominoplasty (an esthetic procedure to restore the abdomen proportion) may be required. Discuss this option with your doctor before the operation to make sure that your final bill won’t be larger than you expect.

Liposuction: step-by-step

Liposuction can be performed in 2 ways:

  • surgical
  • non-surgical.

Usually, the non-surgical liposuction cost is lower than a surgical one. But only a doctor can recommend you the best lipo option according to your body type and your expectations from the procedure.

Nowadays, there are a lot of liposuction types. The most popular are:

Suction-assisted liposuction.

It is a surgical method to remove the excess fat with a vacuum device. A doctor makes little incisions and inserts a cannula (a long tube) connected to a vacuum device. It draws off the fat cells. Just after the procedure, hematomas remain. The vacuum lipo cost depends on the chosen clinic in a particular country, the doctor’s expertise, and the size of the problem area. The suction-assisted liposuction price is usually lower than the ultrasound one.

Advantages: the ability to remove a big amount of fat (about 10 lb), a doctor estimates the result immediately during the surgery and may correct it.

Disadvantages: numerous hematomas, prolonged recovery period.

Suction-assisted liposuction

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction.

During the procedure, fat is destroyed by ultrasonic waves directed to fatty cells via a special probe. After ultrasound lipo, no scars or hematomas remain. The procedure is performed on a device, produced by VASER company. That is why this technique is also known as VASER lipo. VASER lipo cost is higher than the one of suction-assisted liposuction.

Advantages: removes a big amount of fat (about 8 lb), no scars and hematomas, reduces cellulite.

Disadvantages: several procedures may be required, risk of thermal burn.

Ultrasound liposuction

Laser liposuction, also known as Smart Lipo.

It is a lipo technique to remove local fat deposits. A doctor makes a small incision and inserts a light-emitting diode under the skin. It directs a laser to dilute fat. About 2 lb of fat is removed by applying laser lipo.

Advantages: the procedure promotes collagen production, it is allowed to perform on the neck and face area.

Disadvantages: it is indicated only for the correction of small problem areas.

Only a doctor can decide what liposuction technique is the most suitable in your case. The final lipo cost is calculated after your doctor’s consultation.

The liposuction process is the following:

Step 1. Arrival at a hospital. You arrive at the chosen clinic and have a consultation about the procedure. You discuss the volume of your surgery and how much lipo will cost you. Then your doctor assigns a procedure date which in most cases is the next day.

Step 2. Anesthesia. A doctor administers anesthesia to make you feel comfortable during a procedure. Depending on the lipo technique and the problem area size, your doctor can apply local, general anesthesia, or intravenous sedation.

Step 3. Liposuction procedure. A doctor makes manipulations depending on the liposuction technique. It may take from 30 minutes to several hours.

Step 4. Discharge from the clinic. If only one area is operated, a patient doesn’t need admission and can be discharged from the clinic on the same day. If liposuction is performed for several problem areas, a patient is admitted for one day.

Step 5. Recommendations. When a procedure is over, your doctor gives recommendations on the aftercare and the results maintenance. You should strictly follow them to receive the desired result.

Recovery after the liposuction

The recovery duration depends on the following factors:

  • applied liposuction technique
  • size of the operated area
  • amount of operated areas.

After the procedure, a patient is prescribed to wear elastic bandages or special underwear for 10-20 days and take anti-inflammatory medications.

In most cases, a patient can return to work the next day after the procedure and get back to his or her normal daily physical activities in several weeks.

The final result can be observed right after the operation or in several weeks. It depends on the lipo technique and the size of the operated area.

FAQ about liposuction

How much fat is it possible to remove for one surgery?

The volume of fat you can get rid of due to surgery depends on your body and the applied liposuction technique. The maximum volume of fat that can be removed at once composes 8-9 pounds that equals 3 to 4 liters. If a patient wants to get rid of a larger amount of excess fat, the risk of post-procedure complications increases. In cases of a larger amount of fat, the certified clinics offer their patients to perform several surgeries with three to four weeks intervals.

Even though the volume of fat that is removed is not that big, remember that the surgical operations are conducted on stubborn areas with visible fat pockets and after the procedure, the shape of the patient’s body or face improves dramatically.

Is liposuction risky?

Liposuction is a surgical intervention, and any surgery has its risks. However, innovative lipo methods like laser and ultrasound fat removal are minimally traumatic, they rarely cause any complications. To stay on the safe side, plastic surgery clinics make sure that liposuction candidates don’t have diabetes, blood flow problems, or acute heart conditions. The perfect candidate for liposuction has to be as close to his or her normal weight as possible. Liposuction can be prescribed only when a body is formed completely. A patient has to be 18 years old at least.

If you have insecurities or doubts about invasive liposuction, you can always opt for non-surgical liposuction that costs less and is less demanding in terms of the patient’s health condition.

Is liposuction result permanent?

The lipo result may be preserved for years but a patient has to follow the doctor’s recommendations strictly, namely to keep a diet and add physical activities into his or her routine. If you choose a surgical type of liposuction, the adipocytes are physically removed from your body and these cells won’t form again unless you give up healthy eating habits and gain a large amount of weight.

Remember that the main goal of liposuction is not the obesity treatment but the changes of the body contour. As during the operation particular “stubborn” areas are treated you can expect that the shape of these areas will be improved forever unless the amount of weight you gain makes your body produce new adipocytes.

Does liposuction cause scarring?

As liposuction surgery is conducted via tiny incisions, no scars remain after the procedure if it is performed by an experienced doctor. Only tiny, almost invisible traces, may remain after the operation.

Does male liposuction differ from the female one?

Men and women have different “problem areas” with stubborn fat accumulation which means that the popular areas for liposuction differ as well. However, these differences don’t affect the steps of the surgery or the price of an operation. The liposuction cost for men is the same as for women and is only affected by the size of the problematic area.

How many times can I undergo liposuction?

There are no medical limits to the number of surgeries you can have. However, if the weight returns after liposuction when you follow all doctor’s recommendations, it is better to consult with a dietician or endocrinologist before applying for another surgery.

When do swelling and hematomas disappear after the liposuction?

In most cases, it takes about a week. Sometimes, however, the recovery is longer and can take several weeks. Most doctors agree that it takes about two months to fully recover and see the best results of your surgery.
