Hip replacement in ENDOPROTHETICUM Rhein-Main / Prof. Dr. med. Karl Philipp Kutzner

About the clinic

Hip replacement at ENDOPROTHETICUM Rhein-Main in Mainz, Germany, typically runs around $5,700 for the outpatient "ENDO-in-a-day" program. This procedure is led by Prof. Dr. med. Karl Philipp Kutzner, a specialist who has performed 5,000+ joint replacements. The clinic stands out for its integrated campus that combines surgery, rehabilitation, and patient housing in one location.

Advanced Surgical Techniques

Prof. Dr. med. Karl Philipp Kutzner uses the Wiesbaden approach for hip surgery. This is a minimally invasive method that accesses the joint from the side and front. It helps protect the surrounding muscles and tissues. The technique allows for faster recovery and less pain after the operation. Patients often experience rapid mobilization, meaning they can start moving shortly after the procedure ends.

Short-Stem Prosthesis Benefits

The clinic specializes in calcar-guided short-stem hip implants. These cementless prostheses focus on bone preservation. The design follows the natural shape of the bone to maintain normal biomechanics. Prof. Dr. med. Karl Philipp Kutzner is a developer of these techniques and received the Themistocles-Gluck-Preis for his work in endoprosthetics. This approach is ideal for active patients who want to maintain a high quality of life.

Integrated Recovery Concept

The treatment follows a structured chain to support patient healing. It begins with an individual consultation and diagnostics to plan the surgery. Inpatient operations take place at partner facilities like the curaparc clinic. Afterward, patients move to the on-site ENDO-Reha center for specialized physical therapy. For those traveling from afar, the ENDOPROapartments provide comfortable housing on the clinic campus near Frankfurt Airport.

Outpatient Hip Replacement

The "ENDO-in-a-day" option costs around $5,700 for eligible self-paying patients. This package includes a minimally invasive hip prosthesis and a transparent billing structure. It is designed for healthy patients who can return home or to their local accommodation the same day. This streamlined process focuses on getting the patient back to their daily routine as quickly as possible. You can leave a request on Bookimed to learn more about this treatment plan.

ENDOPROTHETICUM Rhein-Main / Prof. Dr. med. Karl Philipp Kutzner: more details about the clinic

Germany, Mainz
ENDOPROTHETICUM Rhein-Main is an orthopaedic specialty practice for joint replacement and joint surgery in Mainz, centered on hip and knee endoprosthetics. The practice provides specialized diagnostics and planning, and supports treatment pathways that include minimally invasive surgery and structured after-treatment. In hip replacement, Prof. Dr. med. Karl Philipp Kutzner is particularly known for minimally invasive techniques and short-stem hip arthroplasty. A key area of expertise is calcar-guided short-stem prostheses, which aim to reconstruct hip biomechanics while using a bone- and soft tissue-sparing implantation technique. The concept is explained through a “kalkar-guided” approach—stabilization of the implant along the calcar structure to support more physiological load transfer. The practice also highlights minimally invasive anterolateral access (front-lateral), described as the “Wiesbaden approach,” designed to avoid injury to surrounding musculature. In knee arthroplasty, treatment includes knee prostheses and partial joint replacements when appropriate. ENDOPROTHETICUM positions itself as a concept of “all from a single source,” combining surgical expertise with integrated rehabilitation support. For patients considering short-stem options, the practice emphasizes modern planning and bone-preserving principles. International patients benefit from additional coordination support when being treated at partner facilities such as curaparc clinic in Mainz and LILIUM-CLINIC in Wiesbaden. The foreign-patient support includes English-speaking staff and—if needed—a dedicated contact person to help plan the stay. ENDOPROTHETICUM’s team consists of Prof. Dr. med. Karl Philipp Kutzner, Nerminа Murtic, and Juliane Hoidn, reinforcing the practice’s focused, specialty-driven model. The clinic also shares educational materials on short-stem total hip arthroplasty, describing benefits such as bone preservation, enhanced recovery, and reduced risk of thigh pain. The collaboration with partner inpatient facilities helps create a treatment chain from preoperative evaluation to operation and early rehabilitation. In addition, the practice has its own approach to aftercare, including an announced own rehabilitation facility starting in 2025 with direct oversight by the treating surgeon.

Professor Dr. Kutzner examined my knee extremely thoroughly and performed an excellent diagnosis. I was particularly impressed by the amount of time he took to explain everything clearly. Instead of hastily recommending surgery, he honestly and knowledgeably advised me to try conservative treatment first. We're now starting with hyaluronic acid injections, and I feel I'm in the best possible hands. A doctor who combines competence and trustworthiness. Highly recommended.

From our very first meeting, I was deeply impressed by Professor Kutzner's professional and personal competence, which is why I chose him to perform my hip surgery. The surgery itself went very well, and I was able to leave the clinic after four days without pain medication. His team and all the staff demonstrated the same high level of professional and personal dedication and willingness to help. Thank you so much.

I found Professor Dr. Kutzner to be a competent and personable doctor who helped me with his thorough yet unobtrusive consultation. I quickly got an appointment and decided on a bilateral hip replacement. My surgery went smoothly, and I was able to walk again on the second day. Thanks to the excellent and friendly care at the curaparc clinic, I am making further progress. I can absolutely recommend Professor Dr. Kutzner!

Unfortunately, I cannot join in the praise. At the end of 2022, I met Professor Kutzner at the Joint Center in Wiesbaden. He was a very empathetic doctor who took a great deal of time during my examination and explained everything to me very well and in detail. It quickly became clear that both hip joints needed to be operated on and replaced. This was necessary due to a congenital malformation and six previous surgeries during my childhood. Professor Kutzner was able to see and explain, based on the X-rays, how the corrective osteotomy had been performed in my childhood. Since he had impressed me so much with his skills and knowledge, I became a patient at his private practice in Mainz and was determined to have him perform the surgery. In June 2023, both hip joints were scheduled to be replaced with total hip replacements in a single operation. The plan was for a five-day hospital stay followed by outpatient rehabilitation. Ultimately, only one hip could be operated on the day of the surgery. Only the third implanted hip socket held, and it had to be procured from another clinic in Wiesbaden and transported to Frankfurt, where the surgery took place. I lay on the operating table for seven hours, lost 2.5 liters of blood, suffered damage to the femoral nerve, and experienced extreme leg length discrepancy. Mobilization was only possible about a week after the surgery. Professor Kutzner was no longer so friendly and empathetic; I had the impression that I was becoming a nuisance to him because I had skewed his statistics. I was supposed to be discharged two weeks after the surgery, but that wasn't possible given my condition. He advised me to go into short-term care at a nursing home, as I couldn't care for myself. Fortunately, the ward doctors at the clinic took pity on me, and I was allowed to stay in the hospital for a total of four weeks until inpatient rehabilitation began, where I received treatment for five weeks. 2. 2. 2. 2. 3. 5. 6. 5. 6. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 6. 5. 5. 5. 6. 5. 5. 6. 5. 5. 6. 5. 6. 5. 6. 7 ... On the day of my discharge, Professor Kutzner said goodbye with the words, "And then, after your rehab, come to my practice, and we'll discuss the second surgery. I know how it's done now." I don't know if that was meant to be funny; I certainly didn't think so. I suspect that Professor Kutzner hadn't adequately prepared for my surgery. Due to my medical history, it wasn't a standard joint replacement. When I was looking for a surgeon for my second hip, I was also turned down by one doctor because the clinic where he operated wasn't equipped for a difficult case like mine. I really appreciated that. Perhaps Professor Kutzner should have considered this as well. The result I now have to live with is a significantly lengthened leg, permanent damage to the femoral nerve, and severe limitations in my daily life and work. Lost income due to extended sick leave was an additional burden. A review for medical malpractice and an application to increase my disability rating were both rejected. Thank you so much for this life-changing result! By the way, the other hip has since been operated on at a different clinic and the surgery went very well.
