Lokman Hekim Van Hospital: more details about the clinic

Turkey, Ankara

Lokman Hekim Health Group is a multi-specialty healthcare network founded in 1996. The group operates seven hospitals and one medical center across Ankara, Istanbul, and Van. It also maintains a diagnostic center in Erbil to support regional care. The network employs 955 staff members, including 500 expert physicians.

Accreditations and Capacity

The healthcare group treats approximately 1,100,000 patients every year. It holds ISO 9001 certification for quality management and is accredited by ESMO. The Patient Safety Committee monitors risks and clinical indicators to improve treatment accuracy. One branch in Ankara provides 73 patient beds and four specialized operating rooms.

Cardiology and Heart Care

The cardiology department provides a broad range of interventional treatments:

  • TAVI – replacing heart valves via a catheter without open-heart surgery
  • Angiography and stenting for renal, carotid, and peripheral vessels
  • Radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation for rhythm disorders
  • Permanent pacemaker implantation including MR-compatible CRT-D devices
  • Correction of congenital heart defects such as ASD and VSD

Specialists use CARTO mapping technology to locate and treat complex heart arrhythmias with precision.

Obstetrics and Pediatric Services

The group offers specialized care for high-risk pregnancies through its Perinatology unit. Physicians monitor maternal conditions like gestational diabetes, hypertension, and thrombophilia. Detailed ultrasound assessments are performed between 18 and 22 weeks for fetal health screening. The network also runs a pregnancy school to prepare mothers for childbirth.

Pediatric care is available across several sub-specialties:

  • Pediatric Neurology for developmental and nervous system disorders
  • Pediatric Endocrinology and Immunology
  • Pediatric Surgery and specialized dental care
  • Neonatal intensive care with dedicated incubators for newborns

A specialized birth package includes ten outpatient visits and routine laboratory screenings.

Neurosurgery and Robotic Technology

The neurosurgery department is headed by Dr. İsmail Gülşen, who focuses on complex spinal and brain conditions. Surgeons treat brain tumors, hemorrhages, and hydrocephalus using specialized microsurgical methods. The team also performs endoscopic disc surgery for herniated discs to minimize tissue damage. Spinal fractures and cervical disc issues are managed through both surgical and non-surgical approaches.

Surgeons use the Da Vinci robotic system for several types of complex operations. This technology allows greater precision through small incisions, which often speeds up recovery. The hospital also uses TVNS, a non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation technique.

International Patient Services

The International Patient Services Department coordinates the entire medical journey for foreign visitors. A professional interpreter accompanies patients from arrival until all treatments are complete. Consultations are scheduled at requested times, so there is no waiting in line. The clinic provides several logistics and support services:

  • VIP airport-to-hotel and hospital transfers
  • Accommodation in 3, 4, or 5-star hotels or rental homes
  • Online consultations with cardiologists, neurosurgeons, and gynecologists
  • Medical reports provided in the patient's preferred language

The team also manages travel requests and organizes test results before the patient departs.

At Lokman Hekim Van Hospital, We wholeheartedly thank our esteemed professor, Prof. Dr. İsmail Gülşen, and his team who performed my mother's herniated disc surgery. Although only two days have passed since the surgery, we have already begun to see promising improvement in the paralysis that developed in her leg before the operation. Thanks to your attention, explanations, smiling face, and reassuring approach from the very beginning of the process, we felt we were in safe hands. We are grateful for your efforts, knowledge, and dedication. We are so glad we chose you. :)

Unfortunately, we went to this hospital because my 4-year-old son was experiencing leg pain and couldn't walk. X-rays and ultrasounds were done, but nothing was found. When I asked the doctor, Sahra SAMADVAND, about treatment or what we should do, she said we could admit him or give him an IV. I asked why I would admit him if there was nothing wrong, but she didn't answer. When I asked why this was happening, she said, "He's faking it." She said my 4-year-old son was faking it. She attributed her own ignorance and inability to diagnose to my son faking it. Why would a 4-year-old child fake it? I even went to the chief physician after this, and a physiotherapist looked at him for show, but the staff who took me to that doctor, the doctor himself, all acted like they just wanted him to leave so they could be rid of him. They didn't even listen to me. And my son got worse that night and couldn't sleep from the pain. Because I couldn't trust this hospital, I took him to Van Regional Hospital. The doctor listened to me, checked my son's throat, and then said he should take the prescribed medication and it would pass, that he had an infection in his body, and explained how it was affecting his leg. It took her 10 seconds to diagnose the problem in my son. My son at least felt a little better that night. It's his third day now, and he's walking comfortably with very little pain, thank God. Honestly, we already had two bad experiences before this, so I'm angry at myself for taking my son there. May God not let anyone fall victim to the doctors and staff of this hospital. I lived in Ankara's Etlik district for 30 years and went to the Etlik Lokman Hekim many times, and I was always satisfied. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the Van branch; there's a world of difference in every aspect. Especially if you see the name of the doctor, Sahra SAMADVAND, run away. Instead of professionally diagnosing my son's condition and taking his illness seriously, she diagnosed him as "faking it," and I still blame myself for taking him there. If you're wondering whether to go to Lokman Hekim or another hospital, go to another hospital without hesitation. I have never seen a worse hospital in my life. (Except for the doctor who performed the ultrasound and the staff member who admitted us in the emergency room, I didn't encounter anyone who gave a proper explanation or was friendly.)

This is the worst hospital in the world, may God protect us from it. I called the hospital on Friday to make an appointment, and they said the doctor doesn't see people with appointments, come in immediately and they'll open a registration and see you. We came, got an appointment, sat down, but they had already taken patients with appointments. People kept passing in front of me, and we couldn't get our turn. We waited for two hours. When we went back and said it was our turn, they said there were a lot of people ahead of me and that they were giving priority to patients with appointments. Then why did they give me a queue number at 10 am and make me wait until 12:30 pm?

My wife went there for a leg amputation because the left leg was not being supplied with blood sufficiently. These people cut off the right leg!
