Pneumonectomy in Mexico can offer significant cost savings, but it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Pros Cons
Lower costs. Pneumonectomy in Mexico costs $10,000–$20,000 versus over $40,000 in the US, offering up to 50% savings. Safety concerns. Potential risks include infection (2–5%), bleeding, or respiratory complications, similar to rates in US hospitals when performed by qualified surgeons.
Qualified surgeons. Surgeons are often certified by the Mexican Council of Thoracic Surgery, many with US or European fellowships and 10+ years’ experience. Follow-up care. Managing post-surgical follow-up from abroad can be challenging; some clinics offer telemedicine and discharge planning to help address this.
Modern facilities. Major centers in Tijuana and Guadalajara are JCI- or ISO-accredited and use equipment from brands like GE and Medtronic. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS standards differ from the FDA, but top clinics meet JCI or ISO standards and follow international protocols.
Shorter wait times. Patients often access surgery within 2–3 weeks, compared to longer scheduling in the US. Travel and recovery logistics. International travel for major surgery can increase fatigue and complicate immediate recovery, but clinics in tourist hubs offer recovery support services.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. When performed by qualified providers in accredited facilities, pneumonectomy in Mexico can offer high-quality care at substantial savings.

The medical team was great
The medical team was great, the hospital was top notch. Dr. Pliego was available online throughout the entire process (both pre and post surgery) and the surgery went smoothly.
Even though Dr. Pliego was in another surgery when I was released from the hospital, I appreciated the hospital was able to provide my prescription for both antibiotics and pain medicine so I was able to leave and recover in our Air BnB s I was ready to leave the hospital.
I signed a lot of paperwork that wasn't in english.
About Bookimed service
