Pros Cons
Lower costs. Nephrectomy in Mexico costs $8,420–$9,180, compared to $20,000+ in the US, offering savings of over 50%. Safety concerns. Potential risks include infection rates of 2–5% and bleeding. These risks are similar to US rates when performed by qualified surgeons.
Qualified surgeons. Surgeons are certified by the Mexican Council of Urology and often trained in US or European programs, with extensive experience in laparoscopic nephrectomy. Follow-up care. Postoperative care may be challenging from abroad, but clinics offer telemedicine and coordinated discharge plans to address this.
Modern facilities. Procedures are performed in JCI- and ISO 9001-accredited hospitals using advanced laparoscopic equipment from brands like Stryker and Olympus. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS standards differ from those of the FDA. However, top clinics meet international standards and follow FDA-aligned protocols.
Comprehensive packages. Packages often include pre-op tests, two nights of recovery, take-home medications, and local transportation, simplifying logistics for international patients. Travel and recovery risks. Potential risks include travel-related complications and adjusting to recovery in a new environment. These can be minimized by planning and using reputable clinics in medical hubs like Tijuana or Mexicali.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. When performed by qualified specialists in accredited facilities, nephrectomy in Mexico can offer quality and affordability.

The medical team was great
The medical team was great, the hospital was top notch. Dr. Pliego was available online throughout the entire process (both pre and post surgery) and the surgery went smoothly.
Even though Dr. Pliego was in another surgery when I was released from the hospital, I appreciated the hospital was able to provide my prescription for both antibiotics and pain medicine so I was able to leave and recover in our Air BnB s I was ready to leave the hospital.
I signed a lot of paperwork that wasn't in english.
