"I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people
I have breast cancer and I went through chemotherapy in Moscow. Six sessions have passed. It was very difficult to tolerate these procedures. A doctor in Kazakhstan said that this is enough, it is necessary to switch to tableted chemistry. And Moscow offered to continue doing chemotherapy. Opinions are divided. It was necessary to find a third party. I accidentally found your site on the Internet. Ekaterina Koliko wrote very quickly. The benevolence of Katyusha was immediately arranged towards her. She asked me what I would like to go to. I said that I want to go to the Severance clinic in Korea. Katyusha approved my choice. I sent all the necessary documents and Katyusha quickly redirected everything to the clinic. They began to wait for the invitation. For some reason (and for what I already knew in the clinic), there was no invitation. I am very grateful to Katyusha that she was in touch all the time, supported me, gave me hope. We arrived in Seoul in the morning, we were met by a transfer, brought to the hotel. After lunch, they were already in the clinic, I began to take tests. Constantly with me was one of the translators. Girls translators are great fellows, these are Lida, Olesya, Sofia, Tatyana, Alena. Any question could be addressed, they always prompted. They are professionals. Always with a smile, polite, with enormous patience, and most importantly, they understand that they work with a special audience, with people who did not come to rest. Someone to find out the diagnosis, and someone to do the operation. Thank you so much to the girls. The clinic was impressive. Doctors are professionals. The equipment is super. I got the opinion of a third party, it coincided with the opinion of a doctor from Kazakhstan. I was prescribed a prescription, I bought medicines at the pharmacy and started drinking on arrival home. I also want to write about Darina, who was engaged in transfer (the transfer to the clinic was very convenient and met and carried out), the selection of the hotel was also always in touch, and if I had any questions, she quickly answered them. I want to say that I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people. I am grateful to the Almighty and all who were near me. And the words of the doctor gave me inspiration and inspired great hope, for the sake of these words it was worth a long way to go. Once again, many thanks to all.

My recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable
Good day! I would like to share my impressions of being in the clinic. Thanks to the coordinators, the staff of the international clinic center, all wishes were taken into account. Special thanks to the attending physician, the procedure was perfect, the staff is very attentive, courteous. They are located in a 5-bed room, but at the same time there is no discomfort, food can be chosen taking into account personal taste preferences (Korean, European cuisine) and at the same time satisfying and varied. I can say one thing, there is no limit to my gratitude, my recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable.

Our Nephrectomy Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Nephrectomy, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Kidney-sparing surgery

Renal resection involves removing part of the kidney to treat conditions like tumors while preserving kidney function.

Pros: Preserves kidney function, reducing the risk of chronic kidney disease. Higher patient satisfaction with functional outcomes, retaining up to 80% of kidney function post-surgery.
Cons: More complex than kidney extraction with potential for longer surgical times. Increased risk of complications like bleeding or urine leakage.
Effectiveness: Success rates can reach up to 90% in preserving renal function and removing tumors.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Recovery: 2-6 weeks
Best for: Suitable for patients with small renal tumors (less than 4 cm) or bilateral kidney issues.

Nephrectomy with Da Vinci Robot

This procedure involves the robotic-assisted removal of a kidney using the Da Vinci surgical system for precision and minimally invasive operation.

Pros: Provides enhanced precision with 3D visualization and robotic arms, reducing blood loss by up to 50%. Shorter hospital stay compared to traditional laparoscopic nephrectomy. Quicker recovery time.
Cons: Requires access to advanced robotic technology, which may not be available in all hospitals. Longer setup time compared to traditional methods.
Effectiveness: Success rate of over 95% in complete kidney removal for cancer treatment.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Recovery: 2-4 weeks
Best for: Patients with renal tumors or kidney cancer, especially when precision is critical. Suitable for individuals seeking minimally invasive surgery.
Prices: Cost of Nephrectomy with Da Vinci Robot in Republic of Korea from $16,000

FAQ about Nephrectomy in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is robotic surgery common for nephrectomy in Korea?

Robotic surgery is the mainstream standard for nephrectomy in the Republic of Korea. Major institutions utilize the Da Vinci Surgical System and the locally developed Revo-i robot. High-volume centers perform over 70% of nephrectomies robotically, achieving a 95% efficacy rate for kidney cancer treatment.

  • Available technology: Most hospitals utilize Da Vinci Xi systems for high-precision tumor removal.
  • Recovery advantage: Patients typically discharge within 2 to 4 days after robotic procedures.
  • Surgical precision: Robotics enable shorter warm ischemic times, which helps preserve healthy kidney function.
  • Elite infrastructure: Over 160 robotic systems are currently installed across 96 specialized Korean hospitals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While robotic surgery costs more than laparoscopic options, Korea offers a unique technological advantage. Dr. Kang Seok-ho at Korea University Anam Hospital pioneered Asia's first robotic bladder and urinary tract reconstructions. This high-level expertise at JCI-accredited hubs like Severance and Samsung Medical Center ensures patients receive experimental-grade precision as standard care.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the rapid 1-week recovery period compared to months for open surgery. Many recommend verifying that your chosen surgeon performs over 100 robotic cases annually for optimal results.

What types of nephrectomy procedures are available in Korea?

South Korean hospitals specialise in minimally invasive nephrectomies. They primarily use laparoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques for kidney removal. Leading centres in Seoul use the Da Vinci surgical system for partial and radical nephrectomies. These methods offer high surgical precision, smaller incisions, and faster recovery times.

  • Robotic-assisted surgery: Surgeons like Dr Kang Seok-ho use Da Vinci systems for complex kidney cancer cases.
  • Laparoscopic techniques: Minimally invasive removal is standard at digital hospitals like Seoul National University Bundang Hospital.
  • Partial nephrectomy: This kidney-sparing approach removes only diseased tissue or tumours to preserve organ function.
  • Radical nephrectomy: Specialist centres perform complete kidney removal for advanced cancers or large tumours.
  • Minilaparotomy options: Some clinics offer video-assisted methods, effectively bridging open and laparoscopic surgical approaches.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea University Anam Hospital pioneered robotic bladder and kidney surgeries in Asia. Their surgeons often perform urinary tract diversions entirely within the robot body. This technical mastery generally leads to lower post-operative complication rates. They are lower than with traditional open surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the high-tech digital facilities in Seoul. They recommend confirming all surgical inclusions and using official hospital interpreters to avoid unofficial brokers. Proper pre-surgery hydration and disclosing smoking habits to the anaesthetist help. These steps lead to a smoother recovery process in Korea.

What are the most common reasons for a nephrectomy?

Nephrectomy is most commonly performed to treat kidney cancer or remove malignant tumours. Surgeons also use it to treat chronic infections and clear severe blockages. It also manages irreparable kidney damage from accidents. In South Korea, specialists frequently perform this surgery for living kidney donation within transplant programmes.

  • Kidney cancer: Removes malignant tumours through radical or partial techniques to stop cancer spread.
  • Non-functioning kidney: Stops chronic pain or infection caused by stones or long-term blockages.
  • Severe trauma: Addresses irreparable damage from accidents where the organ cannot be saved.
  • Organ donation: Harvests a healthy kidney from a living donor for a transplant recipient.

Bookimed Expert Insight: South Korean surgical centres lead in robotic nephrectomy volume. Samsung Medical Center alone handles over 45,000 operations annually. Dr Kang Seok-ho at Korea University Anam Hospital is one such specialist. He pioneered robotic urinary tract diversion. This high volume and technical leadership often result in superior organ preservation. This is particularly true for partial nephrectomies.

What is included in the cost of a nephrectomy package in Korea?

Nephrectomy packages in Korea typically cover surgeon fees, anaesthesia, 3–7 days of hospital accommodation, and pre-operative diagnostics. Prices range from $9,000 to $14,500, offering around 52% savings compared to the $24,300 Australian average for kidney removal surgery.

  • Surgical fees: Covers laparoscopic or robotic procedures using technologies like the da Vinci system.
  • Hospital stay: Includes inpatient ward fees, typically ranging from 3 to 7 days.
  • Clinical diagnostics: Bundles blood tests, imaging, and pre-surgical screenings required for safe theatre entry.
  • Support services: Top centres like Asan Medical Center include free airport transfers and personal coordinators.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that choosing robotic-assisted surgery in Seoul increases costs to $16,000–$25,200. However, leading hospitals like Korea University Anam Hospital pioneered scarless robotic techniques. This higher investment often secures treatment at JCI-accredited facilities. Their surgeons handle over 1,000 yearly cases.

Patient Consensus: Prices in the Republic of Korea vary significantly between clinics for identical services. Requesting an itemised quote ensures the package covers anaesthesia and theatre fees. Most patients find that having a certified medical translator is essential for clear communication.

What should I ask my doctor after a nephrectomy in Korea?

Ask whether the tumour removal was successful and about any specific dietary changes. Ask about the monitoring schedule for your remaining kidney. Ask specialists at Severance Hospital or Samsung Medical Center to provide English operative reports. Confirm if robotic techniques like da Vinci were used to assist recovery.

  • Clinical outcome: Confirm if pathology shows clear margins and if the cancer was fully removed.
  • Organ function: Ask for the specific glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of your remaining healthy kidney.
  • Dietary limits: Request precise daily limits for protein, salt, and potassium to protect kidney health.
  • Activity restrictions: Define weight-bearing limits and when to safely resume driving or light exercise.
  • Fatigue management: Discuss plans for managing energy levels. Energy often stays low for 3–6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Samsung Medical Center and Severance Hospital often use da Vinci robotic systems for nephrectomies. These robotic procedures usually offer faster recovery than open surgery. Ask your surgeon if robotic assistance was used. This significantly changes your early-stage movement and pain management plan.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Korea recommend monitoring blood pressure daily after surgery. They suggest bringing a support person to appointments. This helps record complex advice on avoiding NSAIDs and managing salt intake.
