The competence, careful attitude and attention to every little detail is what I really liked
I would like to thank my doctor for his careful attention to my difficult situation. The competence, careful attitude and attention to every little detail is what I really liked. Now I am still recovering and the final result is still far away, but I believe that everything will be fine. I would like to mention my coordinator-translator Jena. She is a very nice girl who helped me during my stay. Kind, nice, responsible and competent. She made me feel very comfortable. Thank you very much to the doctor, Jena and the clinic staff for everything. I will definitely recommend to my friends.

I couldn't have asked for more!
I had surgery done in Korea 2 weeks ago. Bookimed had recommended a few clinics and surgeons initially and I chose VG Plastic Surgery Clinic. Ms. Queen at Bookimed helped with getting answers to many of my questions from the clinic. She followed up with me frequently and continues to do so after my surgery. Bookimed made it easier for me to narrow down on the clinic and surgeon, which I appreciated given the number of surgeons and clincs available in Korea! Ms. Queen at Bookimed assisted with setting up an initial virtual consultation with VG surgery clinic where I met Dr. Choi and Jenny (VG's coordinator and interpreter). After arriving in Korea, I had an in-person consultation with Dr. Choi and Jenny, they listened to my concerns and suggested an alternate surgery method. At the end, my surgical plan was adjusted and finalized. I really appreciated that they listened to my concerns, provided an alternative and adjusted accordingly. I believed my surgery went well since this was my first experience. Jenny at VG was terrific! She acted as my interpreter and organized my recovery services at the clinic. Jenny was accessible during my stay in Korea. I couldn't have asked for more! I flew home after 10 days and slowly recovering now at home. At this point (2 weeks), I am seeing more improvements. I can't wait to see my final results which will be in 3 to 6 months. I am hoping it will be as good as I imagine!
Dr. Choi's expertise and the fact that he listed to my concerns, provided a viable alternative and adjusted accordingly. Also really appreciated that they had interpreter for foreigners who did not speak the language and that they are accessible at all time.
Nurses during surgery were a bit mechanical. I am sure they are in surgeries all day and for them it is routine but for the patient, this could be their first time. A gentler approach would have helped to ease the anxiety.

I would highly recommend this clinic for its quality service and professionalism
I am very pleased with my choice of this clinic. From the very beginning the communication with the clinic staff was fast and of high quality. I chose from 3 clinics. It was in this clinic that I got the best price and quality service before and after the procedure. I had a second rhinoplasty. The doctor did just a jewellery work with my nose. Very carefully, without much interference, he corrected the flaws from the first surgery I had a couple of years ago in Turkey. I am very happy with the result. My nose is now straight and neat. I was also very pleased with the service at the clinic after the operation. I had all the necessary procedures to reduce the swelling immediately after the operation and then during the week I still came a couple of times for procedures, so the recovery took literally a week. Special thanks to the assistant Joan. She was always in touch and very supportive throughout my stay in Korea. I would highly recommend this clinic for its quality service and professionalism.

By far the most attentive care I have EVER gotten in medicine—again, thanks especially to Joanne, who even walked me back to my hotel across the street post-op
One would fear that flying to a foreign country where you don’t know the language would be stressful and scary. Not only did the staff (Joanne <3!) make that all a cakewalk, the clinic’s aftercare was top notch, they really went above and beyond for me. And I am NOT an easy patient—I need to know every chemical in the anesthesia, I negotiate different antibiotics, make them go over my 21 daily supplements, etc—I kept them BUSY and was shown nothing but continual grace and warmth, and was always responded to promptly. By far the most attentive care I have EVER gotten in medicine—again, thanks especially to Joanne, who even walked me back to my hotel across the street post op. As for the surgery outcome, I didn’t even need a Tylenol it was that painless, I was able to walk around and enjoy Seoul every day after my mini lift, and although I’m still swollen at just under two weeks out, I already look ten years younger and am loving what I’m seeing. Dr. Park knows what he is doing, he’s done 3000+ facelifts (yes I asked), he has superb attention to detail, a true artist’s hand, and is a friendly and gentlemanly doctor!

I give Saero Plastic Surgery a 5 because they exceeded my expectations
Dr. Pak is very knowledgeable and professional. It has been over a week sonce my surgery and see.s that everything is healing well. He prescribed a pack of antibiotics and pain killers for me to take for 5 days. The medication worked great because I was at a very minimal pain. His staff walked me through everything I needed from the US to Korea. I felt confident that I was in good hands and I was. The interpreter did a great good Interpreting everything I needed to ask the doctor and addressed all my concerns. I give Saero Plastic Surgery a 5 because they exceeded my expectations. Definitely recommend to everyone.

Now two months after surgery, I am quite happy with the shape of my new eyelids
The medical team members are so friendly and helpful. Although I speak zero Korean, I can sense their passion and empathy, which dramatically reduced my anxiety to go through the surgery. They are very supportive from the right beginning to the end when I left Seoul. And big thanks to the assistance from Yena, who provides detailed before and after care instructions rather than just working as an interpreter. Now two months after surgery, I am quite happy with the shape of my new eyelids. They look much younger and alert.

All medical staff and the doctor were wonderful throughout my treatment journey. Nurses were very kind, attentive and very thoughtful. I’m so touched by their attitude and thoughtfulness, especially after my surgery. the translator Joanne was excellent and very attentive
t was a great experience, the doctor was good, but could have been more attentive. The staff are a little curt when it comes to customer service, but the translator Joanne was excellent and very attentive, there was also a very friendly older nurse. And there were also free therapeutic treatments that I really liked. Now I need to wait for the results to give a real assessment of whether the treatment was really good.

I'm in love! Wonderful doctor and hospital staff. Everything needed for someone undergoing surgery in another country to be reassured and have all questions answered. I received all this. The experience for me, in general, was excellent, I would go back to the Dr
I was very pleased with the attention I received from the first day I arrived at the clinic. The interpreter was able to communicate perfectly to the surgeon what I wanted to be done and what my expectations were. I loved the hospitality of the Medical Team, all very attentive, very concerned about whether I was feeling well or not, reminding me of my check-ups, cleaning, suture removal, giving me all the information for the post-operative period, giving me light and oxygen therapy sessions to improve and accelerate the results of my recovery. The clinic is located in a very central place in Gangnam, it is easy to get there. It is very close to the flat that the clinic provides during your stay until the first check-up. The clinic is spacious, well-lit, very clean, with flexible opening hours for post-operative care. The real estate is very comfortable, they have coffee and tea so that you can help yourself. And, they don't keep you waiting. Everything works as scheduled. And, additionally, they provided me with help on how to get around the city, how to get to the tourist attractions, to the shops where they sell skin care products, etc. The experience for me, in general, was excellent, I would go back to the Dr. and I recommend him 100% to those people who are looking for a good clinic where they can have surgery with the full confidence that everything will go very well.
I loved that the Dr. was very patient in understanding exactly what I wanted, thanks to the interpreter I was able to make the Dr. understand everything perfectly. I also liked very much the attention of the medical team that continued to see me the days after the surgery and the warmth and kindness of each one of them. As well as giving me all the instructions I had to follow, they gave me the creams I had to use so that the swelling and bruising would disappear more quickly.
I have nothing to complain about the Clinic, the Dr., the medical team, the interpreter and the care I received before, during and after my surgery. I just think that I should have stayed longer in South Korea to get to see more beautiful places.
About Bookimed service
Bookimed made it easy for me to have a person who speaks my language to assist me whenever I had questions about the different alternatives of plastic surgery clinics that I could ask to evaluate me and give me a quote. When I had already decided on the clinic I wanted to go to, the person who assisted me very kindly answered all the questions I had after I had made my choice. She sent me all the information I asked for about the clinic, the background of the Dr. who was going to operate on me, health permits, health registration of the Dr., validity of his professional title, etc. Everything I needed to make sure I made a very informed decision and knew everything about the clinic, the Dr, the place where I would be operated on, where the clinic was located, where I would be staying from the day of the surgery until a week later and, obviously, how much I was going to be charged. There was only one difference with respect to the initial budget, but it was because once I was in the clinic I added a part of my face that had not been contemplated before. But even so, the final price did not increase too much compared to what I was charged at other clinics in South Korea.

Most of all, I just wanted to say that I recommend VG because of the wonderful consideration, kindness, and support that I received there
I would like to share my experience with BookiMed and their recommmendation, VG (Very Good) Plastic Surgery. Doctor: Dr. Im Young Min Procedures: Deep plane facelift, mid-face lift with fat graft, sub-brow lift, lower blepharoplasty Referral: I had been wanting to get this surgery for quite a long time, but didn't know which clinic would be best, so I applied to Bookimed who gave me several quotes/recommendations based on my needs. I liked the procedures suggested by VG Plastic Surgery the best and I saw that they had good reviews online, so I set up a consultation. Consultation: At the consultation, several photos were taken in order to analyze the surgery and what would work best for me. The doctor suggested a sub-brow lift for my sagging eyelid skin, a deep plane facelift and a midface lift to address the loss of volume and sagging along with a fat graft to restore the volume to my cheeks, and a lower blepharoplasty to address the hollowness under my eyes along with the malar edema. I worked with Smile, one of the consultants who was very helpful and went over everything with me including all of the options and prices. She was very professional but warm, which is one reason that I decided to go with VG over other clinics. Pre-Surgery Check-up: A few days before my surgery, I went in for a checkup where they did a chest x-ray and a blood test to make sure my body was healthy enough for the surgery. I met with Dr. Im, my surgeon, to go over the plan for the surgery and make sure everything was in place. I met another consultant, Lily, who interpreted everything for me and made sure that everything was clear and comfortable for me. Surgery: The day of surgery, I did an interview about the procedure and how I was feeling prior to the surgery as well as taking several "before" photos to use as comparison. I had also fasted for 8 hours (food and water). The surgery was very smooth, but I believe it lasted a long time- between 6-8 hours as there were many procedures being done. I had to have a breathing tube, which was quite uncomfortable for the first 12 hours after surgery, but I was glad that the doctors took every precaution. They also put in drains in my neck and inside my mouth to keep blood and fluid from pooling under my skin as well as a catheter. Post-Surgery: After surgery, I was taken to a private room for recovery. I stayed in the room for about 24 hours and the nurses took very good care of me, coming in to replace the ice packs for my face, check on my catheter and incisions and just making sure I was comfortable. I was eventually able to have water, then some soy milk, and finally some porridge when I was ready. Lily and Smile checked on me several times to be sure everything was alright and to translate for me. The next day before leaving the hospital, the bandages were removed and Dr. Im came in and checked on me to make sure that everything had gone well. Lily, Smile and another consultant, Jenny, were there to interpret and to make sure I was alright. They removed the catheter and cleaned the incisions, replacing them with clean bandages. I also did an oxygen treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, which was very relaxing. I took a taxi home with Smile's support. Scary Moment: One thing that happened that was a bit scary for me was that I wasn't prepared for how much my eyes would swell up after the surgery. I felt like my bandages were bursting (and the nurse helped me to relieve some of the pressure) and when I looked at myself the day after the surgery, I wasn't prepared for what I saw. The veins in my eyes burst, making them completely red and my eyes swelled up so much I could barely see. This was scary for me as I had not seen this in any of the videos I had watched prior when doing my research. The staff assured me it was normal and that it would go back down, but I guess I'd say that for the first 2-3 days after the surgery, I was pretty worried that something was wrong. The ointment I was applying to keep the incisions clean also coated my eyes from time to time blurring my vision, which was scary, but the consultant assured me this was only because of the medication. I went back to the clinic after 3 days for a check-up and to have my incisions cleaned and the blood drains emptied. Each time I visited the clinic, I was given an oxygen treatment and several photos were taken for documentation. After the swelling in my eyes went down, my recovery progressed quickly. I had more visits (at 7 days, 10 days, 14 days and then 3 weeks) to remove stitches and drains and to monitor my progress. At 7 days, I was given a complimentary hair wash as well, which was very relaxing and such a relief. I also wore a head brace/wrap to keep my face from moving around too much for about a month. I did take it off to sleep at times because it felt tight, but I tried to keep it on during the day for the most part. Conclusion: I am now 5 months post-op, and I am very happy with my results. I feel that my concerns were addressed, and that I look younger and fresher, but still like myself, which was always the goal of this surgery for me. I feel a renewed vigor and like I look like the person I have always been, if that makes sense. I still have some puffiness under my eyes at times, especially when I have built up fluid retention or am very tired, and I am still working to find the cause/solution for this. I believe it is related to lymphatic drainage, so I understand that the surgery could not fully correct this issue, although I do feel like it is better than before. Most of all, I just wanted to say that I recommend VG because of the wonderful consideration, kindness, and support that I received there. From the way that the consultants went out of their way to help and support me, not just through translation, but by encouraging me and helping me, to the care the nurses gave me, to the skill that Dr. Im and his staff in the operating room showed, I am very happy. The scars from my incisions are unnoticeable and will most likely become completely invisible with time, and I feel that my surgery goals were reached. A big thanks to VG Surgery and their staff. I would also like to thank Bookimed for helping me to find this clinic and giving me the information I needed to make my decision.
The customer service and attention from the staff at VG was the best part of my experience. They were all very caring and attentive.
I would have liked to have more post-op consultation with the surgeon and to have been able to ask him more about my questions/concerns.
About Bookimed service
Bookimed was very prompt and responsive, giving me several choices and listening to my concerns and feelings about everything. They recommended several clinics and this gave me a lot of options to consider before making my decision. It's difficult to trust online reviews, so I really appreciated having another level of research before making a choice.

FAQ about Calf Reduction in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Will incision scars be visible after selective neurectomy?

Selective neurectomy incisions for calf reduction in South Korea are typically minimal and strategically hidden within the natural creases behind the knee. Most patients see these 1 to 2 cm marks fade into faint, barely detectable lines that blend with skin folds within 6 to 18 months.

  • Incision placement: Surgeons position small 1.5 cm openings directly within the posterior knee creases.
  • Advanced techniques: Endoscopic methods allow for smaller access points and more precise internal tissue handling.
  • Healing timeline: Marks often transition from red to pale silver over 12 to 24 months.
  • Closure quality: Korean clinics frequently use specialized surgical glue or staples for cleaner skin edge apposition.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While US procedures often average $8,300, South Korean centers like JK Plastic Surgery Center maintain a 100% success rate with much lower costs. The high volume of over 85,000 procedures at such premium clinics ensures surgeons have mastered the tension-free closure techniques necessary to prevent widened or hypertrophic scarring.

Patient Consensus: Many describe the final results as tiny dots or lines that are difficult to find. Patients emphasize using silicone sheets and strict sun protection for 1 year to ensure the best cosmetic outcome.

Is calf-reduction surgery in Korea safe?

Calf reduction surgery in Korea is exceptionally safe when performed by board-certified surgeons using minimally invasive techniques like selective nerve blocking. The country pioneered these methods, and top Seoul clinics maintain high safety standards through KOIHA and ISO accreditations and advanced visualization technology.

  • Surgical expertise: Surgeons at JK Plastic Surgery Center have performed over 85,000 plastic procedures.
  • Safety accreditation: KOIHA-accredited facilities like VG Plastic Surgery meet rigorous international medical safety standards.
  • Advanced techniques: Most clinics prefer high-frequency radio waves over aggressive muscle resection to protect nerves.
  • Technology access: Specialized centers use infrared nerve finders to prevent accidental damage to blood vessels.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear safety-to-volume correlation in Seoul. While the US average cost is $8,300, Korean clinics like JK Plastic Surgery report a 100% success rate across thousands of procedures. Choosing a clinic that serves over 5,000 international patients annually typically ensures access to the most refined, nerve-sparing equipment.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that researching surgeons with 1,000+ specific calf cases is vital for symmetrical results. Many recommend starting with less invasive options like Botox before committing to permanent surgical muscle reduction.

What should I pack for my recovery in Korea?

Pack for South Korea focusing on post-operative leg elevation, compression, and mobility. Essentials include medical-grade compression stockings, loose-fitting wide-leg joggers to accommodate heavy bandaging, and slip-on shoes. Prioritize items like high-dose ibuprofen and melatonin, which are strictly regulated or expensive in Seoul pharmacies.

  • Compression gear: Pack 3–4 extra pairs of medical stockings for the 2-week swelling peak.
  • Loose bottoms: Bring oversized sweatpants or wide-leg trousers to fit over bulky leg bandages.
  • Slip-on footwear: Use Crocs or wide sliders as bandages make standard shoes impossible to wear.
  • Elevation aids: Include an inflatable wedge pillow to keep legs raised and reduce intense swelling.
  • Post-op hygiene: Pack waterproof bed protectors and baby wipes for the initial leg drainage phase.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While clinics like JK Plastic Surgery Center provide premium recovery environments, many patients overlook the commute. Walking even short distances in Seoul's hilly districts is difficult post-op. We recommend booking a hotel within 500 meters of your clinic. Check if your package includes VIP transfers to avoid navigating the subway during the 7-day zombie-leg phase.

Patient Consensus: Many travelers regret not bringing high-capacity power banks and translation apps like Papago. Language barriers often make it hard to request specific medication refills or extra bandages late at night.

Which techniques are commonly used for calf reduction in Korea?

Common calf reduction techniques in Korea include selective neurectomy, muscle resection, and Botox injections. Surgeons in Seoul also utilize radiofrequency nerve coagulation and calf liposuction. These methods target either the gastrocnemius muscle or localized fat to create a slimmer, more tapered lower leg profile.

  • Selective neurectomy: Blocks motor nerves to naturally shrink muscles with 1–2 weeks downtime.
  • Muscle resection: Physically removes 30–50% of muscle bulk for permanent, dramatic reshaping.
  • Calf Botox: Temporarily relaxes muscles using neuromodulators, with results lasting 4–6 months.
  • Radiofrequency coagulation: Uses targeted thermal energy to disable nerves without invasive surgical cutting.
  • Combination therapy: Pairs neurectomy with liposuction to address both muscle bulk and fat.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a shift toward endoscopic muscle resection at top Seoul clinics. This approach removes the inner muscle head first to prevent a bowlegged appearance. While neurectomy costs less, resection is preferred for those seeking permanent 3D contouring despite a longer recovery.

Patient Consensus: Many patients recommend starting with Botox trials to preview your slimmer look. Those undergoing surgery highlight that wearing compression socks is vital for managing early post-op gait changes.

Am I a good candidate for calf reduction?

A good candidate for calf reduction typically struggles with gastrocnemius muscle hypertrophy or stubborn subcutaneous fat resistant to exercise. Ideal patients in the Republic of Korea seek to balance leg proportions, specifically aiming for an ankle-to-calf ratio between 0.3 and 0.35 for natural-looking results.

  • Muscle hypertrophy: Best for firm calves with minimal pinchable fat during tiptoe flexion.
  • Fat distribution: Candidates with soft tissue bulk may require specialized liposuction techniques.
  • Activity level: Avoid active training or running soon as muscle can regrow afterward.
  • Realistic goals: Candidates should understand that surgical results take 6 months to stabilize.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Western clinics focus on liposuction, Seoul-based centers like JK Plastic Surgery Center and VG Plastic Surgery specialize in muscle resection for permanent results. Data shows patients often trial Botox first to preview their `muscle-free` look before committing to surgery. This reversible step confirms if reducing the gastrocnemius muscle achieves the desired slimness without impacting long-term mobility or causing a permanent limp.

Patient Consensus: Many patients recommend losing weight first, as calves can naturally slim by 2–3cm, and suggest getting bilateral measurements before booking. They emphasize that while surgery offers permanent change, the initial 2–4 week limp requires planning for a significant recovery period.

What is the typical recovery timeline after calf reduction surgery in Korea?

Recovery after calf reduction in Korea typically spans 3 to 6 months for final contouring. Initial mobility returns within 7 to 14 days, though specialized nerve blocking or neurectomy offers faster healing than surgical resection. Most patients resume desk work by day 10 under surgeon supervision.

  • Initial mobility: Walking with a slight limp or crutches is common during the first week.
  • Stitch removal: Surgeons at clinics like VG Plastic Surgery typically remove sutures between days 7–14.
  • Compression therapy: Patients must wear medical-grade compression stockings for up to 3 months post-surgery.
  • Activity restrictions: High-impact sports, running, and wearing high heels are restricted for 3–6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek permanent surgical resection, high-volume Seoul centers like BIOFACE Clinic see a shift toward non-surgical nerve blocking. Data shows these advanced neurectomy techniques significantly reduce downtime compared to traditional muscle stripping. You can often fly home safely after 10 days rather than 14.

Patient Consensus: Expect persistent numbness or a tight cramping sensation for several months as nerves settle. Patients emphasize that consistent ice application and religious elevation during the first fortnight accelerate the slimming visible by month 2.

Will scarring be visible after calf-reduction surgery?

Visible scarring after calf reduction depends on the surgical technique used by Korean specialists. Minimally invasive methods like liposuction or radiofrequency ablation leave tiny marks under 1 cm. Invasive muscle resection requires larger incisions behind the knee, which may result in permanent but discreet lines.

  • Liposuction incisions: Surgeons use 5-10 mm punctures hidden within natural skin folds.
  • Radiofrequency ablation: This technique uses needle-thin probes, leaving zero traditional surgical scars.
  • Muscle resection: Larger 2-3 cm incisions are placed strategically in the popliteal crease.
  • Maturation timeline: Scars typically flatten and fade significantly between 12 and 24 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Top Seoul clinics like JK Plastic Surgery Center favor multi-modal approaches to minimize trauma. Data from high-volume centers shows that combining smaller incisions with early laser therapy improves outcomes. Many Korean surgeons now integrate Vbeam laser treatments starting at 4 weeks post-op.

Patient Consensus: Most patients report that tiny marks behind the knee become virtually invisible to others. Those with a history of keloids should discuss specialized silicone sheet protocols with their surgeon.

What complications should I be aware of?

Potential complications for calf reduction in South Korea include muscle asymmetry, where one leg appears slimmer than the other. Patients should also monitor for nerve damage, persistent muscle weakness, and gait changes. In rare cases, infection or scarring may occur at the incision or injection sites.

  • Muscle asymmetry: One calf may shrink more than the other, requiring expensive revision surgery.
  • Gait changes: Nerve-based procedures can cause muscle instability, fatigue, or a permanent lopsided walk.
  • Nerve damage: Some patients report chronic numbness or burning sensations caused by internal scar tissue.
  • Over-reduction: Aggressive muscle resection can leave calves looking veiny, necessitating future fat grafting.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like JK Plastic Surgery Center and VG Plastic Surgery emphasize safety with advanced systems. However, data shows a trend where patients often need 50% extra budget for potential fixes. Most experienced surgeons suggest waiting 6 to 12 months before judging the final symmetrical result.

Patient Consensus: Many patients emphasize the need for pre-operative gait analysis to avoid walking issues. They frequently mention that while initial results look good, long-term muscle fatigue remains a common practical reality.

How long do I need to stay in Korea after the procedure?

Most patients should stay in the Republic of Korea for 10 to 14 days after a calf reduction. This timeframe allows for peak swelling to subside, multiple follow-up appointments, and safe suture removal around day 10 before clearing you for long-haul travel.

  • Recovery timeline: Swelling typically peaks between days 3 and 5 after the procedure.
  • Suture removal: Surgeons usually remove stitches 7 to 10 days following the surgery.
  • Flight safety: Staying 14 days minimizes risks of blood clots during long-distance flights.
  • Clinical follow-ups: Most Seoul clinics schedule 3 to 4 essential post-operative monitoring visits.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many think only of the surgery, the experience at clinics like JK Plastic Surgery Center or VG Plastic Surgery shows that stay length impacts mobility. High-volume centers in Seoul often suggest a 12-day stay because compression garment adjustments are most critical during the first week of healing.

Patient Consensus: Staying 10 to 14 days is the sweet spot for managing post-care and ensuring you feel stable enough for the flight home. Patients recommend building in a 2-day buffer in case of unexpected swelling or travel delays.
