"The tests were taken immediately"
We were met by two girls - translators, very friendly. The husband was examined, the tests were taken immediately. Since the results should have been ready only in a week, we paid for another consultation with the doctor, to which the girl-translator went instead of us. The results were delayed for a couple of days. In general, the impression of visiting the clinic remained positive.

FAQ about FUS-ablation of uterine myoma in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is FUS-ablation covered by Korean National Health Insurance (NHIS)?

FUS-ablation for uterine myoma is currently not covered by South Korean National Health Insurance (NHIS). The procedure is classified as a non-reimbursable service. Patients must pay the full cost out-of-pocket, as the NHIS treats this advanced technology as an elective alternative to surgery.

  • Coverage category: Most hospitals classify FUS-ablation as a non-reimbursable, premium medical item.
  • Standard alternatives: NHIS typically covers traditional myomectomy or hysterectomy procedures instead of ultrasound.
  • Private insurance: Patients often use private indemnity insurance to offset high out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Cost estimates: Treatment costs often range from 10 million to 20 million KRW.
  • Verification: Confirm current status via the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service portal.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While university centers like Severance Hospital hold JCI accreditation, their FUS services remain self-pay. Patients can sometimes reduce costs by choosing uterine artery embolization. Embolization is more frequently covered by insurance than high-intensity focused ultrasound in Seoul.

Patient Consensus: Many patients describe FUS results as excellent but warn about the high self-pay requirement. Most suggest budgeting for the full amount as NHIS appeals for this technology are rarely successful.

How effective is FUS ablation at reducing fibroid size over time?

FUS ablation typically reduces uterine fibroid volume by 40% to 70% within 12 months. This non-invasive procedure uses high-intensity ultrasound to destroy tissue. Most patients see a 30% to 50% size reduction in the first 6 months at JCI-accredited centers like Severance Hospital.

  • Volume reduction: Fibroids typically shrink by 20% to 50% within the first year.
  • Peak shrinkage: Size reduction often stabilizes around 50% to 52% after 2 years.
  • Ablation success: Achieving over 50% non-perfused volume ensures faster and more significant shrinkage.
  • Size constraints: Best results occur with fibroids under 10 cm in diameter.
  • Symptom relief: Pressure and bleeding symptoms improve in 70% to 90% of patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea’s top facilities like Severance Hospital integrate advanced digital imaging and AI. This precision often allows for a 68% volume reduction in 6 months. High-tech monitoring helps doctors reach the necessary thermal energy levels more accurately than standard equipment. This expertise minimizes the 20% to 30% risk of regrowth seen globally.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while fibroids don't disappear, the tissue softens quickly. Significant relief from pain and heavy bleeding usually happens long before the full shrinkage occurs.

Can I get pregnant after FUS ablation in Korea?

Yes, you can get pregnant after FUS ablation in South Korea. This non-invasive treatment targets fibroids while preserving the uterine lining and ovarian reserve. Most patients safely attempt conception 3 to 12 months post-procedure without the risks of surgical scarring or heavy uterine rupture.

  • Fertility preservation: Targets only diseased tissue while keeping the healthy uterine environment intact.
  • Ovarian health: Research shows no significant impact on AMH levels or egg supply.
  • Success rates: Korean surgeons report 70–80% success rates for women under age 40.
  • Delivery options: Over 80% of patients successfully achieve vaginal deliveries after this treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from high-volume centers like Severance Hospital shows the benefit of multidisciplinary care. These institutions integrate digital imaging with fertility tracking to monitor fibroid reduction. Patients often see better outcomes when combining ablation with pre-treatment AMH and tube patency tests. This ensures the uterine environment is truly optimized before attempting natural conception.

Patient Consensus: Many women report successful natural conceptions 6 to 18 months after treatment. Some patients even safely carried twins within a year of ablating large 10cm fibroids.

How long is the recovery period after the procedure?

Recovery after FUS-ablation of uterine myoma in the Republic of Korea is rapid because the procedure is non-surgical. Most patients return to normal office work within 2 to 3 days. This outpatient treatment requires only 24 to 48 hours of initial bed rest before resuming light activities.

  • Hospital stay: Expect a maximum of 24 to 48 hours for bed rest and monitoring.
  • Work return: Most patients return to office duties within 2 to 3 days post-procedure.
  • Physical activity: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least 1 week.
  • Symptom management: Expect mild cramping and fluid discharge during the first 48 hours.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While recovery is fast, many patients at Seoul centers like Severance Hospital report lingering fatigue. Scheduling the procedure for a Friday allows a full weekend for rest. This strategy ensures you are ready for work by Monday without needing extra leave. Doctors emphasize heavy hydration during this period to help the body process treated tissues.

Patient Consensus: Patients suggest planning for 3 to 5 days of light duty. While pain usually vanishes by day 4, fatigue can last up to 10 days.

What are the best hospitals for FUS ablation in Seoul?

Severance Hospital, Samsung Medical Center, and Asan Medical Center are the premier facilities for FUS ablation in Seoul. These university hospitals utilize MRI-guided technology to treat uterine myomas and neurological tremors. They maintain high success rates around 90% and hold prestigious Joint Commission International accreditations.

  • Severance Hospital: A JCI-accredited facility serving 4 million patients annually with specialized women clinics.
  • Samsung Medical Center: Ranked globally for oncology, utilizing advanced InSightec Exablate platforms for thermal ablation.
  • Asan Medical Center: Korea largest multidisciplinary hospital, recognized for high-volume experience in complex gynecological cases.
  • Seoul National University: Operates a dedicated ultrasound research hub focusing on uterine adenomyosis and myomas.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While private clinics offer lower prices, data shows university hospitals like Severance maintain superior 90% success rates. These centers often require a 3-month advance booking due to high demand. Patients should email international departments early to secure slots at these top-tier institutions.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize getting an MRI from their home doctor first to confirm candidacy. Many recommend budgeting extra for a 1-week stay to ensure proper post-procedural monitoring.
