"I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people
I have breast cancer and I went through chemotherapy in Moscow. Six sessions have passed. It was very difficult to tolerate these procedures. A doctor in Kazakhstan said that this is enough, it is necessary to switch to tableted chemistry. And Moscow offered to continue doing chemotherapy. Opinions are divided. It was necessary to find a third party. I accidentally found your site on the Internet. Ekaterina Koliko wrote very quickly. The benevolence of Katyusha was immediately arranged towards her. She asked me what I would like to go to. I said that I want to go to the Severance clinic in Korea. Katyusha approved my choice. I sent all the necessary documents and Katyusha quickly redirected everything to the clinic. They began to wait for the invitation. For some reason (and for what I already knew in the clinic), there was no invitation. I am very grateful to Katyusha that she was in touch all the time, supported me, gave me hope. We arrived in Seoul in the morning, we were met by a transfer, brought to the hotel. After lunch, they were already in the clinic, I began to take tests. Constantly with me was one of the translators. Girls translators are great fellows, these are Lida, Olesya, Sofia, Tatyana, Alena. Any question could be addressed, they always prompted. They are professionals. Always with a smile, polite, with enormous patience, and most importantly, they understand that they work with a special audience, with people who did not come to rest. Someone to find out the diagnosis, and someone to do the operation. Thank you so much to the girls. The clinic was impressive. Doctors are professionals. The equipment is super. I got the opinion of a third party, it coincided with the opinion of a doctor from Kazakhstan. I was prescribed a prescription, I bought medicines at the pharmacy and started drinking on arrival home. I also want to write about Darina, who was engaged in transfer (the transfer to the clinic was very convenient and met and carried out), the selection of the hotel was also always in touch, and if I had any questions, she quickly answered them. I want to say that I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people. I am grateful to the Almighty and all who were near me. And the words of the doctor gave me inspiration and inspired great hope, for the sake of these words it was worth a long way to go. Once again, many thanks to all.

Special thanks to the attending physician, the procedure was perfect, the staff is very attentive, courteous. They are located in a 5-bed room, but at the same time there is no discomfort, food can be chosen taking into account personal taste preferences (Korean, European cuisine) and at the same time satisfying and varied. I can say one thing, there is no limit to my gratitude, my recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable.

FAQ about Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What exactly is MRgFUS and how does it work?

MRgFUS is a non-invasive surgical procedure using high-intensity ultrasound beams to destroy internal tissue. Guided by real-time MRI imaging, these sound waves converge at a focal point to heat and ablate targets like uterine fibroids or brain tissue without skin incisions or radiation.

  • Guidance system: MRI scanners provide 3D images and thermometry to monitor tissue temperature precisely.
  • Ablation mechanism: Over 1,000 ultrasound sources raise target temperatures to 55°C–85°C for cellular destruction.
  • Real-time testing: Awake patients perform tasks during test sonications to verify immediate symptom relief.
  • Recovery period: Patients typically achieve mobility within 48 hours and receive same-day hospital discharge.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea stands out globally because top centers like Severance Hospital integrate MRgFUS into university-backed research hubs. While many countries focus only on tremors, Korean protocols frequently achieve 70-90% fibroid shrinkage. This high success rate stems from their massive volume of 4 million annual patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe the ultrasound pulses as intense zaps and emphasize needing pre-procedure pain medication. Prepare for lingering fatigue for several weeks, even though you can walk immediately after the session.

How is the success of the procedure determined for MRgFUS in Republic of Korea?

Success for MRgFUS in Republic of Korea is determined by immediate tremor cessation and precise thermal lesioning. Specialists at JCI-accredited centres like Severance Hospital use real-time MRI to verify targets. They monitor brain tissue reaching temperatures above 52 degrees Celsius for permanent symptom relief.

  • Clinical assessment: Doctors use standardised scales at 3 and 12 months.
  • Skull density: Patients with a ratio of 0.4 or less show better outcomes.
  • Symptom relief: Success marks an immediate, significant reduction in tremors after treatment.
  • Imaging targets: MRI confirms the precise location of the lesioning during surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korean neurosurgery departments are exceptionally high-volume. Severance Hospital serves 4 million patients annually. This massive case volume means specialists have refined the SDR (skull density ratio) threshold. They can now achieve high success even in patients previously considered difficult cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients were amazed at the immediate results. They walked out of the theatre with steady hands. The follow-up care in Seoul was professional. The focus on precise imaging gave them great confidence.

What conditions are primarily treated with Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) in Republic of Korea?

Specialists in the Republic of Korea primarily use MRgFUS to treat neurological and gynaecological conditions. This non-invasive technology effectively targets essential tremor, tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease, uterine fibroids, and adenomyosis. Leading JCI-accredited facilities in Seoul, such as Severance Hospital, use this incisionless approach. It replaces traditional surgery.

  • Essential tremor: Surgeons use ultrasound to create precise brain lesions that stop hand shaking.
  • Parkinson’s disease: Specialists treat tremors and rigidity in patients unsuitable for deep brain stimulation.
  • Uterine fibroids: Doctors perform thermal ablation to remove benign tumours while fully preserving the uterus.
  • Chronic pain: Specific targeting manages severe pain through ablation, avoiding any surgical incisions or scars.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many countries only approve MRgFUS for tremors. However, Korean centres like Severance Hospital frequently use it for complex gynaecological cases. A high volume of 40,000 annual operations means the teams are exceptionally skilled. They navigate sensitive tissues using real-time MRI guidance.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the lack of incisions for brain and uterine procedures highly beneficial. Many recommend confirming their specific diagnosis with an Australian specialist. This should be done before travelling to Seoul for treatment.

Do I need to be awake for MRgFUS in Republic of Korea?

Patients remain awake and conscious for MRgFUS in the Republic of Korea. This is vital for treating conditions like essential tremor. Staying awake allows the medical team to test symptom relief in real time. Patients provide immediate feedback during the procedure for precise brain targeting.

  • Clinical feedback: Patients perform hand tasks to verify that tremors have stopped completely.
  • Head stabilisation: Specialists apply a frame using local anaesthetic to prevent any movement.
  • Scanning comfort: Patients lie inside an MRI scanner but remain fully communicative throughout.
  • Relaxation support: Doctors may provide mild sedation to help patients stay calm and still.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea stands out globally because major centres like Severance Hospital are JCI-accredited. They treat over 1.6 million outpatients annually. This high volume means their neurosurgery teams have refined the awake protocol. They often achieve immediate tremor relief during the very first sonication.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the experience straightforward because they can talk to the doctors. Many describe the immediate result as life-changing. Staying still in the scanner is manageable because the team provides constant support.

Is MRgFUS in Republic of Korea considered non-invasive?

MRgFUS in the Republic of Korea is a strictly non-invasive procedure. Surgeons apply high-intensity ultrasound waves to destroy targeted tissue without any incisions, drilling, or implants. This method uses real-time MRI guidance for precision. It spares healthy surrounding structures and avoids surgical infection risks.

  • Zero incisions: No scalpels or needles enter the body during the thermal ablation process.
  • Thermal mapping: Real-time MRI monitors internal temperature to protect sensitive nerves and vessels.
  • Outpatient potential: Many patients return to normal activities quickly, as they have no surgical wounds.
  • Wide applications: Specialists use this for neurological tremors, uterine fibroids, and intensive tumour treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: South Korea leads in MRgFUS volume at JCI-accredited centres like Severance Hospital. This facility handles over 40,000 operations annually. Their specific partnership with MD Anderson provides access to specialised protocols for brain lesions. This level of volume means specialists have managed almost every possible case type.

How long does the MRgFUS procedure take in Republic of Korea?

An MRgFUS procedure in the Republic of Korea typically takes 3 hours. Total theatre time varies from 1 to 4 hours depending on tumour size or tremor complexity. Specialists first use MRI scans to map targets. Then they direct high-frequency ultrasound waves to treat tissue without incisions.

  • Procedure time: Most treatments conclude within 3 hours.
  • Clinical mapping: Initial MRI scans precisely locate the target area.
  • Focused energy: High-frequency waves treat tissue through the skin.
  • Recovery window: Patients usually return to normal activities within 3 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Major Seoul centres like Severance Hospital perform 40,000+ annual operations. Their high patient volume often means more efficient procedure times. This expertise helps keep the 1-to-4-hour timeline consistent even for complex cases. Precise MRI mapping results in shorter sessions compared to older methods.

Patient Consensus: Expect a variable timeline in the Republic of Korea. Real experience shows duration depends on tumour location. It is helpful to contact the medical team for a verified timeline. The 3-hour average is a reliable guide for planning.
