How Much Does High intensity focused ultrasound ablation (HIFU) Cost in Republic of Korea?

High intensity focused ultrasound ablation (HIFU) in Republic of Korea typically costs from $12,500 to $23,500. The final price depends on whether the procedure is for medical tumor ablation or aesthetic skin tightening. In the US, similar procedures cost around $35,000 on average. Patients save approximately 49% compared to US rates. Treatment packages usually include initial consultations and the procedure itself.

  • Medical tumor ablation: $12,500 to $23,500 for treating prostate cancer or uterine fibroids.
  • MRI-guided HIFU: Adds a premium of approximately 20-30% due to advanced real-time imaging requirements.

  • Hospital tier: Leading university centers in Seoul often charge higher rates than private specialized clinics.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing specialized women's clinics for uterine fibroids offers exceptional value. "I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people
I have breast cancer and I went through chemotherapy in Moscow. Six sessions have passed. It was very difficult to tolerate these procedures. A doctor in Kazakhstan said that this is enough, it is necessary to switch to tableted chemistry. And Moscow offered to continue doing chemotherapy. Opinions are divided. It was necessary to find a third party. I accidentally found your site on the Internet. Ekaterina Koliko wrote very quickly. The benevolence of Katyusha was immediately arranged towards her. She asked me what I would like to go to. I said that I want to go to the Severance clinic in Korea. Katyusha approved my choice. I sent all the necessary documents and Katyusha quickly redirected everything to the clinic. They began to wait for the invitation. For some reason (and for what I already knew in the clinic), there was no invitation. I am very grateful to Katyusha that she was in touch all the time, supported me, gave me hope. We arrived in Seoul in the morning, we were met by a transfer, brought to the hotel. After lunch, they were already in the clinic, I began to take tests. Constantly with me was one of the translators. Girls translators are great fellows, these are Lida, Olesya, Sofia, Tatyana, Alena. Any question could be addressed, they always prompted. They are professionals. Always with a smile, polite, with enormous patience, and most importantly, they understand that they work with a special audience, with people who did not come to rest. Someone to find out the diagnosis, and someone to do the operation. Thank you so much to the girls. The clinic was impressive. Doctors are professionals. The equipment is super. I got the opinion of a third party, it coincided with the opinion of a doctor from Kazakhstan. I was prescribed a prescription, I bought medicines at the pharmacy and started drinking on arrival home. I also want to write about Darina, who was engaged in transfer (the transfer to the clinic was very convenient and met and carried out), the selection of the hotel was also always in touch, and if I had any questions, she quickly answered them. I want to say that I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people. I am grateful to the Almighty and all who were near me. And the words of the doctor gave me inspiration and inspired great hope, for the sake of these words it was worth a long way to go. Once again, many thanks to all.

My recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable
Good day! I would like to share my impressions of being in the clinic. Thanks to the coordinators, the staff of the international clinic center, all wishes were taken into account. Special thanks to the attending physician, the procedure was perfect, the staff is very attentive, courteous. They are located in a 5-bed room, but at the same time there is no discomfort, food can be chosen taking into account personal taste preferences (Korean, European cuisine) and at the same time satisfying and varied. I can say one thing, there is no limit to my gratitude, my recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable.

The staff is nice, but everything is on stream, as it does not take my problem seriously, as much as I would like! After my husband insistently said that it would be necessary to do so, so this, then after that we were heard.

FAQ about High intensity focused ultrasound ablation (HIFU) in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What medical conditions is HIFU used for in Korea?

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) in Korea treats uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, prostate cancer, and benign thyroid nodules. Officially recognized in 2009, this non-invasive technology also addresses neurological disorders like essential tremor and Parkinson's disease at JCI-accredited centers like Severance Hospital.

  • Gynecological conditions: Primary use for non-surgical removal of uterine fibroids and adenomyosis.
  • Oncology targets: Thermal ablation for prostate, liver, and pancreatic cancers in advanced centers.
  • Neurological disorders: MR-guided technology targets brain areas to treat tremors and Parkinson's.
  • Aesthetic lifting: Common cosmetic application for non-surgical face, neck, and jawline contouring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many countries focus on cosmetic HIFU, Korea has pioneered its use for women's health. Specialists like Dr. Jung Nan Hee at Trinity Women's Clinic hold Master Surgeon status. They often combine HIFU with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to treat complex cases without surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the scar-less results for fibroids and thyroid nodules. Many note that while medical results take weeks to manifest, the ability to avoid hospital stays is a major advantage.

What are the documented success rates for medical HIFU in Korea?

Documented success rates for medical HIFU in Korea range from 81% to over 98% depending on the condition. Uterine fibroid treatments show 98.4% symptom alleviation, while localized prostate cancer achieves 95.6% failure-free survival at 1 year within JCI-accredited facilities in Seoul.

  • Uterine fibroids: Volume reduction reaches 80% at 12 months with 93.8% post-treatment conception rates.
  • Prostate cancer: Documented 5-year survival is 96.4% with specific mortality often reaching 0%.
  • Benign tumors: Effective ablation rates for breast tumors hit 82.7% at 6 months.
  • Aesthetic outcomes: Visible clinical improvement appears in 95% of patients within 3 months post-procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea’s high success rates stem from extreme specialization. For instance, Dr. Jung Nan Hee at Trinity Women's Clinic holds a Ph.D. specifically in gynecologic oncology and trained at Fudan University's HIFU center. This academic rigor is why Severance Hospital handles 1.6 million outpatients annually with such high precision.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report significant volume reduction and successful pregnancies. However, those with tumors over 3cm often note that 10-20% of cases require repeat treatments or strict 6-month MRI monitoring.

Does HIFU affect future fertility?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a fertility-sparing, non-invasive treatment that preserves the uterus and ovarian function. Unlike traditional surgery, it removes lesions without cutting uterine walls. This minimizes scarring and allows patients to attempt conception safely within 3 to 6 months post-procedure.

  • Ovarian reserve: Medical studies show no significant changes in anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels post-treatment.
  • Uterine integrity: Non-surgical approach avoids incisions, significantly reducing risks of adhesions or future implantation issues.
  • Conception timeline: Patients typically recover faster, often attempting pregnancy 6 months earlier than after myomectomy.
  • Expertise in Korea: Specialists at JCI-accredited Severance Hospital utilize advanced digital imaging for high-precision targeting.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While HIFU is widely marketed for uterine fibroids, Korean specialists like Dr. Yang Ki Yeol at Trinity Women's Clinic have performed tens of thousands of cases. Data suggests that success in fertility preservation depends heavily on the surgeon's ability to map heat distribution. Leading Korean clinics often integrate specialized MRI or ultrasound guidance to protect delicate reproductive structures from heat scatter.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the quick return to normal life and often report normal sperm count or healthy pregnancies within a year. Some advise monitoring semen quality or banking sperm beforehand to manage the 10-20% chance of retrograde ejaculation.

How long does recovery take after HIFU?

Recovery after High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) in Republic of Korea is exceptionally rapid. Most patients return to light work within 3 to 7 days. While same-day discharge is standard, reaching full physical activity levels typically requires 4 to 6 weeks as internal tissues heal completely.

  • Immediate return: Most patients resume non-strenuous daily activities immediately following their same-day discharge.
  • Work timeline: Plan for 3 to 7 days off work to manage initial recovery.
  • Activity restrictions: Wait 4 to 6 weeks before engaging in heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.
  • Symptom resolution: Minor soreness and urinary urgency generally resolve within 1 to 3 days post-procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea stands out for treating complex conditions like uterine fibroids and adenomyosis using narrow-beam HIFU. Clinics like Trinity Women’s Clinic are led by doctors who serve as directors for the Korean Society of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. This specialized leadership often results in highly efficient protocols that allow international patients to fly home as early as day 3.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the lack of surgical incisions and report that any initial swelling usually peaks around day 4. Many survivors recommend tracking PSA levels at 1, 3, and 6 months to confirm success.

Are there specialized HIFU hospitals in Korea that I can consult?

South Korea features world-class specialized HIFU centers including JCI-accredited Severance Hospital and dedicated women's clinics like Trinity. Patients can consult experts for therapeutic ablation of uterine fibroids or aesthetic skin lifting. High-intensity focused ultrasound therapy remains a non-surgical, uterus-preserving standard in Seoul’s top-tier medical institutions.

  • Medical specialization: Severance Hospital provides JCI-accredited HIFU for oncology and complex uterine conditions.
  • Expert credentials: Surgeons like Dr. Jung Nan Hee at Trinity are board-certified master surgeons.
  • Technology focus: Clinics utilize advanced platforms for non-surgical fibroid ablation and precision uterine care.
  • Aesthetic excellence: Specialized Gangnam clinics offer medical-grade HIFU for non-invasive V-line facial contouring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While university hospitals like Severance offer high-level safety for complex tumors, private centers like Trinity Women’s Clinic provide more agility. Data shows specialized directors there, such as Dr. Yang Ki Yeol, serve as executive members of the Korean Society of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. This indicates a high level of peer-recognized authority often missing in general aesthetic clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the need to distinguish between medical HIFU for health issues and aesthetic HIFU for skin. Many recommend verifying if a clinic provides English-speaking coordinators for seamless communication during the treatment journey.
