How Much Does Radiofrequency ablation of the liver Cost in Republic of Korea?

Radiofrequency ablation of the liver in the Republic of Korea typically costs from $6,200 to $9,500. The total price depends on the hospital tier, tumor complexity, and diagnostic imaging requirements. Patients save around 65% compared to the US, where this procedure costs $22,500 on average. Standard medical quotes usually include the procedure, a short hospital stay, and basic post-operative medications.

  • Hospital tier: Prestigious university hospitals in Seoul typically charge 15-20% more than private clinics.
  • Medical complexity: Treating multiple tumors or using 3D mapping increases the total treatment cost.

"I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people
I have breast cancer and I went through chemotherapy in Moscow. Six sessions have passed. It was very difficult to tolerate these procedures. A doctor in Kazakhstan said that this is enough, it is necessary to switch to tableted chemistry. And Moscow offered to continue doing chemotherapy. Opinions are divided. It was necessary to find a third party. I accidentally found your site on the Internet. Ekaterina Koliko wrote very quickly. The benevolence of Katyusha was immediately arranged towards her. She asked me what I would like to go to. I said that I want to go to the Severance clinic in Korea. Katyusha approved my choice. I sent all the necessary documents and Katyusha quickly redirected everything to the clinic. They began to wait for the invitation. For some reason (and for what I already knew in the clinic), there was no invitation. I am very grateful to Katyusha that she was in touch all the time, supported me, gave me hope. We arrived in Seoul in the morning, we were met by a transfer, brought to the hotel. After lunch, they were already in the clinic, I began to take tests. Constantly with me was one of the translators. Girls translators are great fellows, these are Lida, Olesya, Sofia, Tatyana, Alena. Any question could be addressed, they always prompted. They are professionals. Always with a smile, polite, with enormous patience, and most importantly, they understand that they work with a special audience, with people who did not come to rest. Someone to find out the diagnosis, and someone to do the operation. Thank you so much to the girls. The clinic was impressive. Doctors are professionals. The equipment is super. I got the opinion of a third party, it coincided with the opinion of a doctor from Kazakhstan. I was prescribed a prescription, I bought medicines at the pharmacy and started drinking on arrival home. I also want to write about Darina, who was engaged in transfer (the transfer to the clinic was very convenient and met and carried out), the selection of the hotel was also always in touch, and if I had any questions, she quickly answered them. I want to say that I am very happy for getting to know BOOKIMED, professionals really work there, and most importantly, they are not indifferent people. I am grateful to the Almighty and all who were near me. And the words of the doctor gave me inspiration and inspired great hope, for the sake of these words it was worth a long way to go. Once again, many thanks to all.

My recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable
Good day! I would like to share my impressions of being in the clinic. Thanks to the coordinators, the staff of the international clinic center, all wishes were taken into account. Special thanks to the attending physician, the procedure was perfect, the staff is very attentive, courteous. They are located in a 5-bed room, but at the same time there is no discomfort, food can be chosen taking into account personal taste preferences (Korean, European cuisine) and at the same time satisfying and varied. I can say one thing, there is no limit to my gratitude, my recommendations to friends, acquaintances only this Clinic! The prices are reasonable.

"The results were unbelievably positive!"
The staff is nice, but everything is on stream, as it does not take my problem seriously, as much as I would like! After my husband insistently said that it would be necessary to do so, so this, then after that we were heard.

FAQ about Radiofrequency ablation of the liver in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate for liver RFA in South Korea?

Liver radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in South Korea achieves an initial complete tumor necrosis rate exceeding 95% for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients meeting Milan criteria see 5-year overall survival rates between 83.7% and 85.1%. Advanced imaging and no-touch techniques in Seoul clinics further minimize local progression risks.

  • Survival outcomes: 10-year survival reaches 74.2% for single nodules under 3 cm.
  • Recurrence rates: 5-year recurrence-free survival typically ranges from 25.9% to 35.6%.
  • Local progression: Cumulative incidence of local tumor progression stays between 14.5% and 20.4%.
  • Impact of size: Success is highest for single tumors smaller than 2 cm.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Quality indicators at top-tier centers like Severance Hospital often exceed global benchmarks. Severance was the first JCI-accredited facility in Korea and maintains 1.6 million annual outpatient visits. This high patient volume allows surgeons to master no-touch RFA techniques. These methods reduced 2-year local progression to just 1.6% in recent multicenter Korean trials.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that RFA feels safer due to robotic guidance and minimal complications. They strongly advise consistent follow-up imaging every 3 months to monitor for potential recurrence.

Which hospitals in South Korea are best for liver RFA?

The best hospitals in South Korea for liver radiofrequency ablation (RFA) include Asan Medical Center, Samsung Medical Center, and Severance Hospital. These Seoul-based institutions feature specialized liver centers with JCI accreditation and record high annual procedure volumes using advanced real-time 3D imaging and PET-guided precision.

  • Asan Medical Center: Ranked first in Korea, performing approximately 600 liver RFA procedures annually.
  • Samsung Medical Center: Recognized by Newsweek as a top global oncology hospital with high-tech facilities.
  • Severance Hospital: A JCI-accredited facility using advanced AI and digital imaging for complex cases.
  • Seoul National University: Features a multidisciplinary team approach handling over 10,700 patients daily.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Western clinics offer standalone RFA, top Korean centers like Samsung Medical Center frequently bundle ablation with TACE. This combined approach often yields better outcomes for nodules up to 3cm. Patients should ask if this hybrid therapy is appropriate for their specific case.

Patient Consensus: Patients report high satisfaction with the precision of English-speaking teams in Seoul. Many recommend verifying if follow-up MRI scans are included in the initial quote to avoid unexpected administrative hurdles during recovery.

What is the recovery time after liver RFA?

Recovery after liver radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is typically brief. Most patients return to normal routines within 7 days. This minimally invasive procedure allows same-day or next-morning discharge. It significantly reduces physical downtime compared to traditional open surgery for liver tumors.

  • Hospital stay: Expect discharge the same day or following morning after observation.
  • Immediate activity: Patients often resume light walking within 1 to 3 days post-procedure.
  • Work timeline: Most individuals return to professional duties within 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Physical restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least 7 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinical data from high-volume centers like Severance Hospital shows that recovery speed depends on patient volume. With over 1.6 million outpatients annually, these JCI-accredited facilities use advanced digital imaging to precision-aim probes. This tech-heavy approach typically limits tissue trauma, helping 80% of patients reach full recovery by week 2.

Patient Consensus: Expect a sensation similar to a pulled muscle or the flu for the first few days. Many patients find that referred shoulder pain is actually more noticeable than the liver site itself.

Are there specific advanced techniques used for liver RFA in Korea?

South Korean clinics utilize advanced liver radiofrequency ablation (RFA) techniques like no-touch ablation and AI-assisted fusion imaging. These protocols, integrated into the Korean Liver Cancer Association guidelines, enhance precision for tumors under 2 cm and reduce recurrence risks using specialized multi-electrode systems like STARmed VIVA.

  • No-touch ablation: Electrodes surround the tumor rather than puncturing it directly.
  • Fusion imaging: Real-time ultrasound merges with CT/MRI for high-accuracy targeting.
  • Perfusion-cooled systems: Saline-infused electrodes expand heat zones to treat larger tumors.
  • Vessel mapping: Advanced mapping protects major vessels and prevents portal vein thrombosis.
  • Combined TACE-RFA: Sequential chemoembolization and ablation improve outcomes for 3–5 cm tumors.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea stands out because high-volume centers like Severance Hospital combine 1.6 million annual outpatient experiences with domestic hardware innovation. While many countries import RFA tech, Korean surgeons often use locally developed VIVA systems. This synergy between `wet` electrode technology and massive patient volumes leads to superior local control rates.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that using no-touch RFA with multi-electrode arrays significantly reduces the need for retreatments. Many prioritize surgeons in Seoul who perform over 100 cases annually to ensure safety near bile ducts.

What pre-procedure preparation is required for liver RFA in Korea?

Pre-procedure preparation for liver radiofrequency ablation in Korea follows the 2022 Korean Liver Cancer Association guidelines. Patients must undergo dynamic contrast-enhanced CT or MRI scans 10–14 days before. Strict fasting, medication adjustments for blood thinners, and precise clotting factor assessments ensure maximum patient safety during the procedure.

  • Imaging protocols: dynamic CT or MRI scans map tumors 1–2 weeks before the procedure.
  • Blood benchmarks: doctors verify platelet counts above 50,000 and INR levels below 1.5–1.8.
  • Medication timing: patients must stop anticoagulants like aspirin or warfarin 3–7 days prior.
  • Fasting requirements: strict NPO status starts at midnight with no food or water allowed.
  • Infection screening: hospitals require routine COVID and TB screening before admitting any patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korean hospitals like Severance Hospital often schedule anesthesia consultations just 1–2 days before the ablation. This differs from Western timelines where meetings happen weeks earlier. Patients should maintain a flexible schedule during their first week in Seoul to accommodate these last-minute clinical assessments.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that fasting rules are non-negotiable and hospitals will reschedule if any food is consumed. They recommend arriving 2 hours early for final skin marking and IV placement.
