Neurologist, Epileptologist
Prof. Antonio Russi is a researcher for new antiepileptic medications for non-surgical treatment suitable for each person with epilepsy. Founder of the Russi Epilepsy Institute.
Prof. Antonio Russi is recognized as a world-famous neurologist and one of the best Spanish doctors, according to Forbes magazine.
He graduated from the Medical Faculty of the University of Barcelona in 1972 with a degree in neurophysiology. He received a degree in epileptology in the Henri Gastaus Hospital in France and Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital in Canada. In 1978-1986, he worked at the Antiepileptic Center of Barcelona.
Professor Antonio Russi was the first in Spain to conduct video-EEG monitoring in 1986. In 1987, he founded the private Institute of Epileptology. Soon, it has become part of the Teknon Medical Centre, one of the best hospitals globally, according to Newsweek magazine.
Prof. Antonio Russi is a member of international scientific communities:
Prof. Russi's applies an individual approach. He prescribes an individual treatment scheme for each patient using 24-hour brain EEG monitoring.
Prof. Russi finds the most effective drugs within 2-5 days, and begins treatment right away. Patients save precious time instead of spending months on drug testing.
Patients try 3-4 new drugs daily under round-the-clock supervision and EEG control. The monitor records and compares the activity of neurons at different times of the day and night in a state of rest, arousal, and sleep. Prof. Russi gives patients various drugs and immediately monitors their effects. At the end of the monitoring, patients know which drugs they should take for a long-term regimen.
Surgical treatment of epilepsy is available at Teknon. A team of neurosurgeons led by Dr. Bartolome Oliver applies a minimally invasive robotic approach.
Surgeons use the Neuromate® robotic system and O-ARM navigation to plan each step with accuracy down to the millimeter.
During the surgery, the doctor installs electrodes up to 2 mm in size. It records electrical brain activity accurately, finds the source of epilepsy, and 'turns off" them without hurting healthy brain functions.
According to the indications, surgeons perform a second operation to resect the direct focus.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) with high resolution accurately examines the nature of the epileptic activity and determines the exact localization of the focus.
Examination time: 1-5 days
HD-MRI of the brain contains 200+ sections and is carried out in a particular mode (Flair). It gets detailed images that can be matched with EEG results, and then creates 3D reconstruction of the epilepsy focus. For children, this test is performed under anesthesia.
PET-CT confirms the focus localization when planning surgical treatment. It sees the metabolism of glucose in brain cells (neurons).
If necessary, genetic tests are conducted.
