Dr. Stefan Sacu is an experienced ophthalmologist. He specializes in cataract and retinal surgery, as well as diseases of the macula and retina. Since 1999, he has worked at the Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical University of Vienna. He has taken part in many scientific projects. Univ. Prof. Dr. Stefan Sacu is a renowned Austrian ophthalmologist and eye surgeon, internationally recognized for his expertise in retinal diseases, cataract and vitreoretinal surgery, and medical retina research. With decades of clinical and academic experience, he has played a central role in advancing modern ophthalmology and improving visual outcomes for patients with complex eye disorders.
He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating in the 1990s, and began his specialist training in ophthalmology and optometry at the Medical University of Vienna. Early in his career, he focused on diseases of the retina and vitreous body, developing advanced surgical and imaging techniques that became benchmarks in ophthalmic diagnostics and therapy.
1990s – Completed medical studies and began residency in ophthalmology.
2000s – Specialized in retinal surgery and medical retina, performing complex procedures such as vitrectomy, macular hole repair, and retinal detachment surgery.
2010s – Appointed Professor of Ophthalmology and Senior Consultant at the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Vienna, where he combined clinical practice with academic research and teaching.
Today – Serves as a senior consultant at Wiener Privatklinik, offering state-of-the-art treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, and vitreoretinal disorders.
Prof. Sacu has authored numerous scientific publications on retinal imaging, intraocular surgery, and macular disease therapy, contributing to international guidelines for modern retinal care. He is also an active educator, training the next generation of ophthalmic surgeons and participating in global research collaborations.
