Prof. Dr. Robert Schmidhammer is an esteemed Austrian trauma and reconstructive surgeon, internationally recognized for his expertise in microsurgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and hand and reconstructive trauma surgery. With decades of experience in complex surgical procedures, he has made significant contributions to restoring function and improving quality of life for patients with severe injuries and nerve damage.
He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where he graduated in the 1990s, and soon began his surgical training in trauma surgery and reconstructive microsurgery at Vienna General Hospital (AKH). Early in his career, he focused on peripheral nerve injuries and the challenges of functional reconstruction after trauma, which became the foundation of his research and clinical innovation.
1990s – Completed medical studies and specialized in trauma surgery at the University of Vienna.
2000s – Advanced his expertise in microsurgical and reconstructive techniques, developing new approaches to nerve repair and limb reconstruction.
2010s – Appointed Associate Professor of Trauma Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, where he leads the Laboratory for Nerve Regeneration and Tissue Engineering.
Today – Serves as a consultant surgeon at Wiener Privatklinik and Vienna General Hospital, performing highly specialized procedures in nerve reconstruction, hand surgery, and microvascular tissue transfer.
