Prof. Dr. Walter Klepetko, born in Vienna in 1955, is a world-renowned thoracic surgeon and specialist in lung transplantation. He studied medicine at the Medical University of Vienna, where he graduated in 1978 and later completed his specialization in thoracic surgery. In 1989, he founded the Vienna Lung Transplant Program, which became one of the leading centers worldwide. Since 2010, he has been Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and in 2019 was appointed Head of the Department of Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna and AKH. His expertise includes lung cancer surgery, tracheal operations, pulmonary hypertension and functional lung disease. Prof. Klepetko has authored numerous scientific publications, trained future generations of surgeons, and has been honored with several prestigious awards for his contributions to medicine.
